Here's a quick wiki article about what is Paintball:
Paintball is a sport in which players compete, in teams or individually, to eliminate opponents by tagging them with capsules containing food coloring and gelatin (referred to as paintballs) propelled from a device called a paintball marker(commonly referred to as a paintball gun). Paintballs have a non-toxic, biodegradable, water soluble mineral-oil. The game is regularly played at a sporting level with organized competition involving worldwide leagues, tournaments, professional teams, and players. Paintball technology is also used by military forces, law enforcement, para-military and security organizations to supplement military training, riot response, and non-lethal suppression of dangerous suspects.
Types of guns
There are two types of paintball gun styles, Milsim and Speedball.
Milsim guns are more for the people who like their guns to look like firearms, their price range is anywhere from $100 all the way to $700+

Speedball guns are a more compact design, they're meant for things like speedball (We'll talk about playing styles in a bit. Also don't get me wrong, milsim guns can be used in speedball and vice versa)
Playing Styles
There are many types of playing styles, but we'll got over the two most common ones.

Woodsball/Rec Play
Pretty much paintball in the woods. It's a laid back playing style that nearly everyone starts out with. Objectives like Capture the Flag or Team Elimination get's pretty fun.
Rec play is not always played in the woods, it can be played anywhere (Hyperball, triangles, airball) Recreational play, basically.

Scenerios
Okay, scenerios get very intense. Full scale scenerios get very impressive with having 200+ players on each side. Objectives heavily vary, from fighting future robots, to modern day wars.

Speedball
The competitive side of paintball. Often played in teams of either 5 vs 5 or 7 vs 7. Local tournies have games of 3 vs 3. Basically you have to get the opponents flag but eliminating the other players first is what everyone does.
Speedball is played using inflatable bunkers, each bunker type has a name (Dorito, Snake, D1, D2) And shouting the bunker's name/location in which the opposing player is behind will benefit your team. (Things like "MID DORITO!" "D1 D1!"

Starting out playing paintball
Play a few games on your local paintball field, they have everything you need to play.
If you want to buy a paintball gun, avoid brands like Spyder or Brass Eagle.
Here are starter guns I recommend:
For the Milsim look: BT-4, Tippmann 98 Custom
For Speedball: Azodin Blits, GOG Envy
Avoid CO2, as it is in-consistent and it's affected by temperature. Use high pressure air (HPA) Far more consistent, and electronic guns can't use CO2.
It's a good idea to invest in a good paintball mask. super important
Here are how different guns work if you're interested: http://www.zdspb.com/tech/misc/anim_hammer.html
Nifty thing about paintball guns is that it is all pneumatics, so they don't wear down much over time. Meaning that they keep their resale value, and there is a large market for used guns.

Change the X7c pic. I may be a milsim buy, but by god, bipods are the most useless shit ever in paintball.
Also, das a big pic of your ego9 there.

Also, you know what markers are pretty? Automags.

Yeah, automags and Karnivors are awesome. I want to get a pump autococker. Maybe a used trilogy, and convert it to a pump cause those are pretty cheap.
Ive never tried paintball before, it sounds really fun
Ive never tried paintball before, it sounds really fun
It is very different to airsoft, in that It is exclusively close quarters combat, basically. Anyone that tells you they are a paintball sniper, is likely being a retard. 95% of "snipers" just attached useless shit to their marker and still only have the same range/accuracy as the rest. The other 5% own a tiberius FS marker (uses expensive but accurate bullet shaped paintballs).
Brotips:
Always stand in a bunker/behind brush. Look through the cracks in the wood at your enemy, when target is aquired, pop up and shoot.
Pull the trigger as fast as you can, only stop when the enemy says "hit" or you see paint break.
Some people will wipe the paint off after being hit. Like your shed, these people need a second coat of paint.
Most rental goggles are NOT thermal (meaning they are prone to fogging). Keep your upper lip over your lower lip, forcing you to breath down, sort of.
My complete setup is:
EGO9
Pinokio
Guerrilla 45/4500
Invert Avatars
Empire 09 pants
Added to the op. How are you liking your pants? I've got some crappy nxe's that does not have good knee padding. they were 30 bucks so I don't regret them.
I'm looking into 2011 Dye pants. By World Cup, all the 2011 stuff will be cheaper
Camo shirt from walmart
Camo pants from army surplus
Vforce grillz w/ fanz kit
Ninja 48/3000
X7Phenom w/ egrip, TechT BK bolt, 18" apex2 barrel (no tip, on it, leaves it at 16")
I am going to get the magfed kit from rap4 when they stop being retards (likely never). Seriously, magfed phenom with electric box-mag. Looks sexy as hell, all the benefits of an elec hopper/cyclone feed, apparently its decently built aswell, in contrast to most (c)rap4 gear.
Played paintball for the first time with my ROTC unit about a month ago. It was a lot of fun, and we're supposed to be having a big training event soon where I'll need a gun of my own. I don't want anything terribly expensive, so long as it shoots decently. Any suggestions?
If you need a MilSim/Woodsball gun:
http://www.ansgear.com/BT_TM_7_Paintball_Gun_p/bttm7paintballgun.htm
(There aren't many good cheap Milsim markers that aren't Tippman 98 clones or terrible)
If you just need something that will work and don't care about "space gun" appearances:

Many of the 98 clones arent terrible. Anyway, the valve system the marker uses doesn't effect accuracy that much - mostly affects noise and efficiency.
A tip98 with a decent barrel will still shoot on the dot.
[editline]2nd October 2011[/editline]
98 clones include the alpha black, pretty much everything by BT (that is not the TM7 and 15).
http://www.ansgear.com/Tippmann_98_GxG_Mask_20_Oz_Tank_4_1_remote_p/ztipp98kit3.htm
^for only a few bucks more than the azodin, you get everything you need. But, I would recommend getting a HPA tank aswell - CO2 is terrible.
http://www.ansgear.com/PMI_Pure_Energy_Aluminum_48_3000_Basic_Tank_p/pmialu483kbasichp.htm
Cheapest HPA tank on ansgear. Will do what you need.
[editline]2nd October 2011[/editline]
Another great starter marker is the A5.
Personally, I think the BT-4 is better than the 98c. The insides are built better, and valve system don't go bad after a couple thousand shots, like the newer tippy's do.
Although the older 98's without the ACT are built like tanks. shame tippmann has gone a bit downhill in quality
My Gear:
'05 Spyder Pilot ACS
20 oz. CO2 tank
Halo Invert TOO
Some shitty JT mask
A bright yellow hoodie that barely fits me that I got in '05
Windpants
Camo Wellington boots
The only issue I have is the frequency with which my marker likes to decock itself, I think it's either the ACS bolt preventing a chop, I don't have the hopper set up right and it's not feeding fast enough, or that I didn't properly maintain my gun for the ~6 years I've had it. Each one of these is equally likely, I literally ignored oiling all my o-rings for ~5 years and I'm still not quite sure how the speed settings work on my hopper.
Still though, it fires fast enough to scare the shit out of little kids who think they're old enough for paintball, and that's always fun.
Also, because the limit around here in most places is 230fps, I had to swap out my spring, which wouldn't go below 250. After swapping it out, it now doesn't fire above 200. I have to try and arc most of my longer-distance shots.
I frown whenever I see 13 year old kids with brand new paintball equipment playing for their first time literally doing everything wrong.

I agree that the newer 98's and tippman-made 98 clones (sierra one I'm looking at you) are shit, but the 2011 A5 and the Phenom are kicking rad.

I just got back from the field, and I rage when I saw this kid. He was no older than 14. Guess what his setup was? Let me tell you:
Ego11 (how the Christ?)
A fucking Extreme rage Overdrive Hopper ($35 hopper on a $1,000+ marker, what)
20oz CO2 (YOU IDIOT WHAT ARE YOU DOOOIIIIING)
He wondered why his marker wasnt shooting right. He was filating the trigger like a retard at the chronograph, dumbstruck at why no paint came out the end, and just clouds of icey-looking air. Eventually, the marker stopped cycling, and the bolt remained forward.
One of the refs dismantled it, it turned out that most major o-rings had cracked, and the bolt face looked like absolute shit.
We think his father was in logging/fishing/something lucrative (there are a few insanely rich families in my area due to owning such a company) because this kid had an expensive marker and no clue.
I delved deeper into the matter, talking to the on-site shop lady (our onsite shop is decent, but only sells things like oil, grease, tank o-rings, pods and such) he arrived, showed her the marker, and asked "Give me whatever else I need to play". The shop lady, being the field owners wife, didn't really know how expensive the marker was, and gave him what was cheapest.
I really want to go play, but I have no money.
:sigh:
play pump, alot of people in my field do that

I would have cried tears of sadness seing an ego11 run off co2
Yeah but pumps cost money
:v:
Look around pbnation or techpb for some good deals. My friend plays the whole day with his trilogy converted pump, and he uses less than a bag. Also adds a nice challenge playing against the people shooting ropes
You can get a good used pump for much under $100. Check ebay, kijiji, craigslist, local buy-and-sell papers, and your local paintball shop.
Paintball forums such as mcarterbrown.com, the Operator groups (a5og.net, x7og.net, 98og.net and invertog.net), techpb.com and pbnation.com have buy and sell sections.
Also, playing pump takes tons of skill. For the same price as a used pump, you can likely get a used semi auto marker that has pretty much the same accuracy, but is semi, and thus much more beginner friendly.

Ninja'd, oh well, my post was more helpful :v:
i like browsing paintball forums, but they're all immature, except for mcarterbrown, but it's not as active

Any of you guys know where I could go about finding a large HPA tank?
Something around this size (the middle one)

Any reputable paintball website. That is a CO2 tank, BTW, get a HPA tank instead.

Read my post again, thats what I was asking for. I need an HPA tank of similar size to the CO2 tank in that picture.
I play paintball occasionally, like. Once every 2 weeks.
I haven't got my own Marker, but I thinking like starting with an Azodin Kaos, I'll get the blitz if I can find it though (and if its within my budget). I'm more of a speedball guy.
Also, how much does paintball games cost you guys?
In here its about
USD $15 for 200pellets, Marker Rental, Equipment Rental and the Admission. No time limit.
USD $12 for members.

My place is $15 for a rental package (marker, mask, chest protector if wanted, gloves if wanted) and your first 500 paintballs.
Every bag of paint after that is $20.
For people with their own markers like me, its $20 a bag of paint. But, people like me who often bring rentals guys along (I have brought around 10 different people to the field to try out the sport) get a discount. I currently get bags (500) at $15 and a cas (2000) at $60, they are usually $80.

As I said, any reputable online retailer will have large sizes HPA tanks. Anyway, it is hard to judge exactly how big that tank is.
40 bucks a case, and 18 entree, so about $60 for the day.
You canadians pay so much for paint :(
Hmm, in here its about $40 for a case too.

You're right, using lethal ammunition will make for a much better game.

Can anyone recommend a solid stock for the Tippmann A5? It feels gimpy using a remote-line without one..
