The anti-vaccination movement isn't limited to just the United States. The Pakistani government has issued hundreds of arrest warrants for those unwilling to vaccinate their children against polio, the latest effort to combat the surging public health crisis in the country. So far, 10 people have reportedly been arrested for refusing to vaccinate their kids, according to local media.
The deputy police commissioner for Peshawar, Riaz Khan Mahsud, told the New York Times that there have been as many as 16,000 cases of parents refusing to vaccinate their children. Mahsud added that there is "total determination" on the part of the police to arrest people if they refuse to get vaccinations, and that there is "no leniency" towards the measure.
Good to see the Pakistani government doing something right. They don't have a reputation as very good custodians of their people.
This is good, but it's unfortunate that it's come to this. The fact that people are getting arrested is just going to fuel the anti-vaxxers I'm sure.
i didn't think i'd ever say it but i think we should take a few pointers from pakistan

Arresting would definitely be questionable, that's for sure. I think the most it should go up to is businesses and other people taking a "not vaccinated = no service" stance. I have no qualms myself with arresting, but not vaccinated = no service would get the point across just as well.
in an ideal situation, they'd attempt to educate the people first, instead of just flat out arresting them
in any case, at least something is being done
I wish the same was for America. This is a pretty extreme measure but... it isn't too extreme. Without vaccinations, these idiots will cause polio to become a thing again.
Pakistan is being more medically progressive than america right now
Good, anti-vaxxers are idiots; Lock them up and re-educate.
I think people really gotta start having a look what these vaccines prevent, google polio on image search; it really fucks people up and i think anti-vaxxers have not a clue.
We need that here.
it's good that they're being punished for it but I really think arresting is too far.
Of course, people need to keep a few details in mind:
1) Pakistan is the last major hotspot for Polio, with Afghanistan and Nigeria being lesser hotspots (eradication in Nigeria is coming back within reach, finally).
2) The "anti-vax" contingent here is the Taliban, and they're shooting at vaccination workers. Hard to conduct a vaccination campaign like this.
Circumstances are a bit different there than here.
Never thought i would see Pakistan being smarter than US fucking A
I can understand this, considering Pakistan's constant actual battle's with science.
When Pakistan is doing better than the USA, you know something is off.

That's also because we used vaccination workers as spies to find bin laden from blood samples. Our government had to know that they wouldn't trust them from that point.
Understandable considering if an outbreak occurs in Pakistan trying to contain and treat it will be incredibly difficult and costly. They really don't want an outbreak.

Outbreaks have been happening in Pakistan for years. 306 cases last year, 9 so far this year.
Here's the good news, though:

We're so. fucking. close. Also, since that map comparison was drawn up, Nigeria has gotten a lot closer to eradication. Pakistan is now the Polio hotspot in the world, and that's with only ~350 cases in the last 12-14 months -- pretty fucking fantastic when you look at the picture 25 years ago.
we really need an enlightenment / awakening where people are educated on a huge scale about this stuff, and that you aren't allowed to visit doctors if you think you know more than them by skipping vaccines.

So essentially the solution is to create a group of second-class citizens in order to coerce them into getting vaccinations?
How asinine, not being vaccinated is very foolish, yes but actively degrading the living standards of a group of people is equally stupid. Furthermore this would only serve to polarize peoples stance on the issue and create a stigma for the parents and children to have to live with, by creating policy like that you could make discrimination a common and accepted tactic. An argument could be made that doing something like that would just encourage more religious people to not vaccinate, seeing as their peers are suffering for their beliefs. How would you even identify someone without vaccinations? Maybe have them sew pictures of bacteria to their clothes?
This should be a social issue at worst, maybe start off with better education and not throw misinformed people into the slammer or make pseudo Jim-Crow laws, that's the opposite of social progress.
Christ.

This is not a social issue, it's a public safety issue. Parents who don't vaccinate their children risk their own children as well as other people who are unable to get vaccinated for medical reasons.
Though I agree, it would be hard to specifically discriminate against those who don't vaccinate. Arresting them would probably be simpler and more effective.

when you look at this i think rather than going after people without polio vaccinations they should be going after the taliban?

it wouldn't though, business would just pop up to specifically spout out about how they're totally against vaccines
this shit shouldn't be played with, history speaks for itself of these diseases and this idea of trying to "appease" these fucked up anti vaccine nutjobs isn't going to accomplish anything
i'm not really sure this is going to do anything but drive a bigger wedge between the taliban and the rest of their country
still eliminating polio is best in the long run

That's what the GOVERNMENT wants to happen! The PEOPLE have finally discovered one WEIRD TRICK that has government officials in TEARS. SCIENTISTS have found JET FUEL and STEEL BEAM as ingredients in the vaccine. The American People need to WAKE up and SEE the TRUTH. THEY want polio to spread to DEPOPULATE the country. Politicians HATE them!
One a serious note anyone who declines the proper vaccinations for their child should face criminal charges on some degree.

I just can't understand the mentality against vaccines these days.
"It gives children autism!"
"It's against my religion!"
Okay, fine, your child can be a perfectly normal non-autistic symbol of piety. With a gimpy leg. Or worse.
More like an iron lung
