Canada's purchase of 65 new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jets for 9bn Canadian dollars ($8.5bn; £5.6bn) is proving controversial.
The contract with US company Lockheed Martin was signed without a competitive bidding process, drawing fire from Canada's opposition party.
Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff said, if elected, his government would put a hold on the contract.

The jets will replace Canada's ageing fleet of CF-18s.
"At a time when the Conservatives are also signalling significant cuts to Veterans Affairs, a $16bn [Canadian dollars] sole-sourced contract, agreed to without transparency, can't be allowed to proceed," Mr Ignatieff said in a statement.
But Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government defended the purchase at a press conference, where a prototype of the plane was unveiled.
"We need to ensure our fighter aircraft fleet remains the best in the world to meet the threats of the 21st Century," defence minister Peter MacKay said.
Maintenance of the planes for 20 years is also included in the contract, but that cost has not yet been disclosed.
Media reports estimate that maintenance could bring the total cost to Canadian $16bn.
The planes will be the fifth generation of Joint Strike Fighters. Canada has worked with the US on the development of these fighter planes for over a decade.
eh?
Blame Canada.
What kind of hockey or beer drinking game includes fighter jets?

Plane mentioned to save you Googling it yourself.
They're replacing the older ones.
F-35's are p. good.
I'd prefer if the Canadian Forces bought themselves some cheaper and proven Swedish Gripens, bu it's politically unacceptable for Canada to not buy some F-35s given the involvement the government and Canadian companies have on the JSF program.
Man what happened to these jets fighting other jets and having sexy dog-fights and shit like that.
I don't see the taliban up in there jets and shit like that.
GIVE THEM TIME MAN.
They're currently in the process of finding out the proper shit-to-dirt ratio for agile flight.
Taliban are scared of planes, last time they flew one it hit a building.

The Soviet Union fell and with it the exports of (reasonably) advanced military hardware to third world client states. So no more classic air-to-air duels - just aircraft dropping precision munitions day after day.

Oh, yes, I heard about that.
The Taliban need some drivers training....eh
Considering Canada has contributed up to $7 billion towards R&D of the F-35 JSF program, its about time we get something for our money.

In this situation he's completely right... :raise:
9 billion for 65 planes? That's not a bad price for that many and that type of model.

the f-35 is the more cost effective alternative.

The F-35 is a multi-role fighter designed to attack ground targets in addition to air targets. The F-22 was designed solely to be an air superiority fighter and isn't as effective for a ground attack role. Not to mention there have only been 168 built and delivered with little additional funding, whereas the F-35 is expected to sell more than 2,500 units around the world. Deal with it.
FUCK YEAH CANADA :canada: :canada:
This is news? They're just buying a bunch of fighter planes. No matter what you may of guessed or looked up on Wikipedia, I'm pretty sure this was an educated decision.
This plane has Vertical Takeoff and Landing.
Not a bad deal for those planes.

Oh my bad, my friend, I thought it said 36, still a major rip off considering all the delays and what not along with the final price tag
What kind of hockey or beer drinking game includes fighter jets?
They must be inventing a new crazy game that has figher jets with hockey sticks trying to hit missiles into precision targets.
