• Apple fires Chinese supplier for using underage workers
Apple discovered that PZ was working with one of the area's largest labor agencies to actively recruit and work with underage workers to fake the appropriate documents to make them appear older than they actually were. As a result, Apple terminated its relationship with PZ and reported the labor agency (Shemzen Quanshun Human Resources) to the provincial governments of Shenzen and Henan.

When new violations are found, Apple requires its suppliers to return the workers back to a school chosen by the family and finance their education. "In addition, the children must continue to receive income matching what they received when they were employed. We also follow up regularly to ensure that the children remain in school and that the suppliers continue to uphold their financial commitment," wrote Apple in its latest report. Good for them. Let's hope others follow.
I like that policy they have with what to do with them when they are found out about
With all the shit surrounding Apple in the last two years, its nice to see they are getting good publicity for once. It also goes to show that it is literally a pittance to big corporations like Apple to fund both an entire family and a kids education in China. They probably pay a total of a hundred dollars or so towards each kid+family for a year yet potentially it could save the entire family from poverty if the kid goes on to get a good job
They go back to a school chosen by the family AND they get their education paid for? Apple don't mess around.

That's a great policy. I came into this thread thinking that the kids would probably either just go hungry or find somewhere else to work, but glad to hear the situation is heavily in favour of the kids.
I bet Apple isn't going to give back all the money that they made from it
I bet Apple isn't going to give back all the money that they made from it
Why would they?
Publicity stunt. Apple will just hire another cheap source of labor, why should they be praised for this?
Publicity stunt. Apple will just hire another cheap source of labor, why should they be praised for this?
Because this cheap source of labor used child workers. As terrible as Foxconn and the like are, all their employees are adult. I think they are, at least
Because this cheap source of labor used child workers. As terrible as Foxconn and the like are, all their employees are adult. I think they are, at least
Child labor is pretty much the norm in china.
Child labor is pretty much the norm in china.
I know. Everyone knows. And that's terrible. That's why Apple fired this supplier. Duh Of course it's a publicity stunt. Who cares? All charitable acts are done for either publicity or self-righteousness

They shouldn't be able to profit off of child labor, it's not ethical.
Why would they?
Well if they REALLY cared... We are horrified that children were used to make our products. We have reported this company, and fired them as our supplier. Buuuuuuut we'll keep the money
Watch as China chases Apple out of the nation for eternity
Everyone should care. They're painting themselves in a good light, which will drive further sales of their products. Unless, of course, you can show me a source that clearly states that the companies that produce Apple goods use child workers
Hey Apple, you know what would solve this problem forever? If you started doing your parts production in the US.
Hey Apple, you know what would solve this problem forever? If you started doing your parts production in the US.
Most companies have their parts and units built in China, Do you have any idea how hard you idea would be to implement? At least Apple is moving back some unit production back to the states, since it's departure in. Many new iMacs are now sporting a "Assembled in the USA" engraving.
I'm not saying it'd be easy. I AM saying it's something that needs to be done, not just by Apple but by all companies.
At least then the outrageous prices on Apple's shit would be justified
Hey Apple, you know what would solve this problem forever? If you started doing your parts production in the US.
Does any company do that?
Does any company do that?
No, but it's worse when Apple doesn't do it because I don't like their product!
No, but it's worse when Apple doesn't do it because I don't like their product!
No, it's bad when any company does it because those are jobs we could be giving to Americans.
