Man, F1 in the '90s was fucking amazing. [editline]8th February 2016[/editline] I know it's old, but IDGAF.
Old F1 was best F1 It's shit now
Old F1 was best F1 It's shit now
F1 is no longer about competition and speed, it's a pure industry between the different stables/teams that often order their drivers to slow down intentionally so another can win. They even fucked up the classic engine sounds because of enviromental awareness bullshit.
So you like dying?
The environmental impact of a couple dozen high-performance racecars with engines that already pushed the boundaries of efficiency is absolutely nothing compared to the environmental impact of the millions on millions of consumer vehicles, outdated powerplants, livestock, and industrial transports (rail and sea).
I can't wait to see F1 with AI driven cars "racing" at moderate speeds in the distant future when driving a vehicle yourself is something unusual.
I can't wait to see F1 with AI driven cars "racing" at moderate speeds in the distant future when driving a vehicle yourself is something unusual.
If there is one activity that humanity will never voluntarily remove itself from, it's sport.
V10 or V12, gaawwhhhdd ughhhh
The V10 era heavily reminds me of my childhood. We'd have our weekend lunches infront of the TV to watch F1. At this point it was still about technical improvements and the rules didn't keep gimping that.
God, you guys really want to pollute the planet more, do you?

Third planet had signs of an extinct type sub-1 civilization. Planet is completely incapable of supporting life and upon further inspection it would appear that a popular sport known locally as "Formula 1 Racing" is solely responsible for a complete ecological collapse and shortly afterwards the species present became extinct. Its a shame really, if they'd only downsized the engines on those vehicles we might have found an interstellar neighbor

A single person is absolutely nothing compared to humanity as a whole, yet one person effectively killed 60.000 given the right conditions.
You try to apply logic to your claim but fail spectacularly.
Why exactly do you guys think F1 was something else back in the 90's in comparison to today? Because safety measures have improved drastically and people don't die that often?
I miss Murray Walker.
F1 is no longer about competition and speed, it's a pure industry between the different stables/teams that often order their drivers to slow down intentionally so another can win. They even fucked up the classic engine sounds because of enviromental awareness bullshit.
please STOP spouting this You claim the golden era is behind us, and that we have piddly little 1.6 litre turbos now. Guess what, so did mclaren mp4/4 that won 15/16 races that season, with two of the most revered drivers in that era behind the wheel. Don't cry emissions, we're making suitable power with these engines, with buckets more torque than you saw in the V8s/V10s. We don't need to make 1000HP anymore to achieve the same speeds. For example, the fastest time at Monza with the 1.6 V6 engines is roughly the same as they did in 2004 - which are considered some of the fastest F1 cars ever produced. F1 is boring, I won't deny it, but it's not the engines, not at all, don't blame it on those. Below is an example of a 1.5 litre engine, it had a rev limiter roughly the same as what you find these days, high pitch RPM monsters weren't always the norm. [editline]8th February 2016[/editline] Aerodynamics really has come so far, and its so blatantly evident in F1
I miss the V10 era for the sound, but I'm not discounting the worth of the newer engines just because of the sound
Why exactly do you guys think F1 was something else back in the 90's in comparison to today? Because safety measures have improved drastically and people don't die that often?
Because the aggressive evolution of the sport has slowly died out, earlier you'd see much bigger variance between cars (which was interesting) It's an extreme sport, safety measures can end up being detrimental to it's core if pushed too aggressively.
My favorite part of F1 is reading all the new ways each team comes up with to beat the rules without breaking them. Like the fan car that one year or another year where one team had enough fuel line tubing spooled up to hold an entire additional gallon of gas. Thats what I love.
enough fuel line tubing spooled up to hold an entire additional gallon of gas
so there's a limit explicitly to the size of the tank but no checks on how much gas a team actually pours into it then? cheeky as hell
so there's a limit explicitly to the size of the tank but no checks on how much gas a team actually pours into it then? cheeky as hell
I think he means that they measure the contents of the tank, but if your fuel has to travel an extraordinary distance through a tube system that is big enough to hold an extra gallon of tank, you'd get away with it. [editline]8th February 2016[/editline] IIRC, there was someone who was caught filling their roll-cage with fuel in NASCAR.
so there's a limit explicitly to the size of the tank but no checks on how much gas a team actually pours into it then? cheeky as hell
not how it works now though, the fuel pump tracks how much fuel has been used up to a maximum of 100kg each race. i think the rulebook states that the fuel flow must not exceed 100kg/hour. refuelling isn't a thing anymore so being able to put more fuel in than your competitors is useless. fuel does still need to be managed though, the car has multiple engine settings that decide how rich or lean it'll burn the fuel. for example you could run the car rich when you need to make overtakes, and lean when you're within a comfortable gap of the car behind
so there's a limit explicitly to the size of the tank but no checks on how much gas a team actually pours into it then? cheeky as hell
It was discovered and almost immediately banned, but it was still damn clever. I love that stuff though. The fan car was particularly impressive even if they did withdraw from the race after qualifying because its purpose was to cause suction to the road to improve cornering. Such devices are explicitly banned but their car wasn't banned because it wasn't a suction device, it was a turbine based engine air cooler... that just so happened to suck air from under the car via the ground effect body sections, so it had the (obviously intended) side effect of causing phenomenal cornering. They were taking almost 30 seconds off their laps in comparison because they hardly had to slow down in corners. They withdrew because if they didn't everybody would have done exactly the same thing and then it'd have been banned.
IIRC, there was someone who was caught filling their roll-cage with fuel in NASCAR.
Sounds super safe
Not my fault you always forget the butterfly effect.
Oh no you're wrong, from your status I can see it clearly.
So you like dying?

God, you guys really want to pollute the planet more, do you?
Nice bait, but I'll bite just this once. If you were serious about damage to the environment, then you'll know not to look at the racecars themselves, but at the number of big rigs and airplanes it takes to move around the "F1 Circus". *That* is where the impact resides. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/oPZ7pnN.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/1rSQ87p.jpg[/img_thumb] ^ A few hundred of these, driving all over Europe, have infintely more impact than an F1 race alone. But assholes like yourselves just don't look at the big picture and would rather nerf the cars more and more. If you guys could come up with a solution that could make those big rigs and private airplanes more "eco friendly", I'm sure Bernie would be happy to listen to you.
