They've also been declared illegal in the Netherlands last month, and to tell the truth, I can't really hate Nintendo for achieving this. The R4 (and other flash cards) totally obliterated the DS market.
Everybody and their mums have one now anyway.
We should ban computers because "The mere fact that the device can be used for a non-infringing purpose is not a defence" :downs:
I suppose it's the right thing to do, even though it puts people making their own games at a disadvantage. Although if people really want to use them they will probably just buy them from overseas . I mean just because it is illegal doesn't mean people won't do it.
But do people seriously make their own homebrew games with these things? Is there a huge community of homebrew gamers on the DS? I can understand this ruling. I don't like it, but I can atleast hold my hands up a little.
If they outlawed custom firmware for the PSP, however...
woops.
Maybe this is because Nintendo want to expand DSiWare to include full games that can be downloaded and stored on the next DS
I remember when I was able to buy an R4 and M3DS Real from Amazon UK for around £10. In hindsight is was, and still is, ridiculously easy to pirate games and it was seriously damaging game sales.
It is kind of late, game cartridges are surely going to become redundant in a few years. Will they ban SD cards next?
Nintendo was really unhappy about the R4 so they were always trying to crack down the manufacturers, looks like they got their break.
Apparently the 3DS is going to be hard to crack, though.
Never had one of these but I know someone who does. I remember looking over his shoulder at this huge list of pirated DS games, probably far outnumbering any he bought himself. Guess that's the case against them then.
This sucks big-time, I loved home-brewing for the DS in programming class.
Probably going to hurt the meager amount of money that actually made their own games, but that's the price they'll have to pay.
The problem is still in check, but I honestly think people kind of blow it out of proportion most of the time. Case in point, I've never even heard of these things before, so I'm sure the more casual DS players buy their games from a regular store like walmart rather than pirate them. Is it really that big of a problem in the UK?

Regular mothers have been walking into game stores asking if they could buy a R4 card there. The reason Nintendo wanted to bring it down so badly is because it broke through to the mainstream.

To be honest, none of my mates have bought a DS game since we got our R4's in '08. But then again, we wouldn't have bought those games anyway...
