In a milestone announcement, today the FDA approved the use of Truvada, the first drug to be used for HIV prevention in the 30-plus year battle against the virus. To be used as part of safe sex practices and continued testing, the drug, which was first approved in 2004, has already shown promise in preventing infection, with some figures placing protection rates as high as 90 percent.
Still, some concerns have been raised about the drug, not least among them the potential for mutation of the virus--there are theories that the preventative drug will encourage the virus to become stronger. To help curb that possibility, the FDA says "Truvada’s manufacturer, Gilead Sciences, Inc., is required to collect viral isolates from individuals who acquire HIV while taking Truvada and to evaluate these isolates for the presence of resistance." In other words, Truvada will, you know, watch the situation closely.
The drug may also come with a hefty pricetag of $13,900 for a year's worth of pills, but right now, it's the only drug of its kind, and so that might be expected. Most FDA regulations focus on general safe sex practices--condoms, that kind of thing--to prevent infection, but this is the first medicine approved to stop contraction of the virus. We'll bring you more on this as it develops--this is a huge deal for U.S. treatment of HIV.
I don't think this is late, sorry if it is.
90% protection rates holy shit.
No fucking way, this is beautiful, hopefully it does work out well.
pimps are preparing their wallets
Can't wait till this gets cheap enough so that we could make it available in poverty stricken areas.
We're STILL waiting for that to happen with FOOD, let alone medicine.
Damn, 90% protection rate is fucking awesome, doubt its always that good, but still pretty great.
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/Condom_rolled.jpg[/t]
Right?
Condoms can't guarantee to protect you from HIV.

Right?
Condoms protect but not as well as the medicine.
Condoms can't guarantee to protect you from HIV.
They have a better protection rate than Truvada.

Ship the first ten tons of the stuff to Africa. God knows they need it most.
This is wonderful news. All they need to do is make the drug cheap.

with this price it seems the cure to aids is actually shooting up a million dollars up your veins.
Condoms can't guarantee to protect you from HIV.
99% of the time they can.
$13,900 for a year's worth of pills
Still some time to wait, I can see.
i put condoms on my open wounds
i put condoms on my child birth
I'm afraid this might actually lead to an increase in AIDS, because people might take it and think they don't need to be careful anymore.
ok no seriously it's $13900 a year who the fuck is going to take it?
I'm afraid this might actually lead to an increase in AIDS, because people might take it and think they don't need to be careful anymore.
With a 90% success rate, I think it'll decrease more than having those few select cases happen.
I'm sure it will happen, but I think the decrease will be a lot greater.

Hey, at least it's awesomely great as a proof-of-concept

Natural selection.
90% protection rates holy shit.
As high as 90%. Still it's a start.

90% doesn't sound all that great for something that you'd need to keep you safe on a regular basis.

Yeah, I'm one of those Bible-beating contraception-promoting Texas moms.
It's fantastic that this is happening, but we won't see it on a mass consumer scale for quite some time, and with good reason. If HIV were to adapt, there goes that entire drug. We don't want that virus, out of all of them, to modulate- we've been lucky that it hasn't really pulled many curveballs on us.
I expect this to be used only in hospitals or fields where contamination/contact with the virus is likely. This would save countless doctors and nurses from the potential risk of HIV infection due to vomit and blood contact, and greatly reduce costs for surgery and sterility fortification.
As part of PrEP, HIV-uninfected individuals who are at high risk will take Truvada daily to lower their chances of becoming infected with HIV should they be exposed to the virus. A PrEP indication means Truvada is approved for use as part of a comprehensive HIV prevention strategy that includes other prevention methods, such as safe sex practices, risk reduction counseling, and regular HIV testing.
Yep, limited usage. Regardless, this is a great day for everybody.
Condoms have like a 10% failure rate from what I've read. Plus, they don't stop the virus from being spread due by child birth or open wounds.
10%? No way. You think 10% of women fucking with condoms are getting pregnant? It's like 0.01% failure rate, if even that.
ok no seriously it's $13900 a year who the fuck is going to take it?
rich people
Confused with the terminology
Prevention - As in this won't actually stop HIV after you've already got it, it'll just protect you from getting it with a 90% success rate?
I mean that's nice and all but the drug would have to be cheap as fuck to even risk prevention when there's a 10% chance you can still get HIV. Especially since the best places to use this would be on a large scale within certain commmunities/locations that have a large HIV population (i.e. Africa), where they could basically just phase out the virus slowly, preventing the spread of it from happening. At this cost though, it's virtually impossible for anyone to have it except the super rich, and the super rich generally don't have problems that involve wanting to prevent getting HIV (but not actually cure it).
Unless this means cure as well, in which case it's probably cheaper to do this in the long term than current methods to keep you alive with the virus.
Holy hell that price tag
