Feeling chilly? Here's cold comfort: You could be in East Antarctica which new data says set a record for "soul-crushing" cold.
Try 135.8 degrees Fahrenheit below zero; that's 93.2 degrees below zero Celsius, which sounds only slightly toastier. Better yet, don't try it. That's so cold scientists say it hurts to breathe.
A new look at NASA satellite data revealed that Earth set a new record for coldest temperature recorded. It happened in August 2010 when it hit -135.8 degrees. Then on July 31 of this year, it came close again: -135.3 degrees.
Pah! -93 Celsius
I haven't seen the sun in 20 years beat that one! ((go away clouds ffs))
B-b-but global warming!
I want to go outside in a T-shirt and jeans in that temperature just to see what'd it's like (only for like 2 seconds). Does some really weird/dangerous stuff happen?

Sol 476 (2013-12-08): high -25C/-13F, low -85C/-121F, pressure 9.06 hPa, 705 mins of daylight, 06:06-17:51
That's colder than current conditions at Gale Crater, Mars. (Where Curiosity is)

I bet some bad shit must happen,
or you could die in such temperature

Any oil on your skin would probably freeze, and any boogers in your nose would freeze the second you inhale (that's always the worst part)

that record with the sauna you could do the run in a 200c difference.
Also it doesn't mention you go out butt naked, at least that's what I've been told.....

yep.... butt naked
Jesus fuck, keep in mind that this is a temp where mercury freezes, so old style thermometers would actually crack and break at this temp.
B-b-but global warming!
There is a very good reason no scientist says 'global warming', it's inaccurate. It's climate change. Extremes of hot/cold are proof of the concept.
The coldest place on Earth is the centre of the two Koch Brothers' hearts.

I know you're just being a smartass, but c'mon. Certain places on the planet are warmer than "normal," certain places are colder. Pretty standard stuff, really.
Hell of it is, the body of Antarctica is one of the areas where the ice is growing, which might help explain this new record.

It's not global warming, it's climate change. The trend is that the average is getting slightly warmer, but the extremes get more extreme.

I know, I was agreeing with that :v:
Climate change always amused me as a term though because it justifies literally anything that could happen. It's semantics really, but it's a goofy term to describe what is always an ever-changing phenomena.
I was just clarifying because your post wasn't totally clear.

Why would it crack? Does mercury expand when it freezes? I've not heard of that happening, I thought that was a property mostly exclusive to water.
Los Angeles is pretty nice year round but the culture crushes my soul pretty well
That temperature is pretty much uninhabitable right?
That temperature is pretty much uninhabitable right?
The temperature of space is about -270 degrees celsius and we have a habitable space station in orbit right now.
The temperature of space is about -270 degrees celsius and we have a habitable space station in orbit right now.
What.
That's because the people inhabiting the space station are inside a capsule that's heated to a comfortable room temperature.
Gustafa is talking about whether or not anything could survive in temperatures of -90C

Not to mention there isn't a whole lot of matter outside of the station to conduct heat away from it, so it only loses heat through radiation.

I meant it like you could easily build a habitable place there which I what I thought he meant.

Not quite as easily, since you would have to worry about the atmosphere and ground sucking up your precious heat.
N-no, the coldest place on earth is in s-sempais heart. Why wont he notice me!

yeah okay we get it.
There is a very good reason no scientist says 'global warming', it's inaccurate. It's climate change. Extremes of hot/cold are proof of the concept.
actually it is "global warming". average global temperatures are rising. this can create extreme weather phenomena, but overall the world is getting warmer.
