THE AFL Grand Final has ended in a draw, with St Kilda coming from behind to tie the scores in the dying minutes. The teams will now meet again to replay the game next Saturday after the drawn Grand Final since 1977, with Collingwood kicking 9.14(68) to St Kilda's 10.8(68). 100,016 fans watched as the Pies led by six points at quarter time, 24 points at half time, and 10 points at three-quarter time before a dogged Saints outfit came storming home to deny them the win. Leon Davis barely fired a shot all day after he was a controversial inclusion for the game, but he kicked the crucial first goal of the final quarter, snapping truly on his right foot eight minutes into the term to give the Pies a 16-point lead. Robert Eddy had a chance to respond for St Kilda when Harry O'Brien was penalised for a throw in defence, but he hit the post with his set shot. But Lenny Hayes capped a brilliant game with a mark and a huge goal from outside 50 at the 13-minute mark to again close the gap to 10 points. The game rested on a knife's edge a minute later when Stephen Milne marked and fired through another for the Saints to reduced the margin further to a single point. Nick Maxwell temporarily saved the Pies when he dived to rush a shot on goal through just centimetres before it crossed St Kilda's goal line, but when the ball came straight back inside 50 from the kickout, Brendon Goddard took the mark of the day, soaring high above the pack and then nailing his set shot to give the Saints the lead for the first time. Travis Cloke couldn't make the distance with a long shot from beyond the 50m arc, but the Saints rushed the ball through, giving Collingwood a potentially vital point. Collingwood weren't done with yet, and a long kick to the top of the goal square and a quick handball allowed Travis Cloke to slam a goal through, restoring the Pies' one-point lead. The scores were tied with just 90 seconds to play when Lenny Hayes pumped the ball long inside 50 and the ball took an unkind bounce for a running stephen Milne, trickling through for a behind. The rest of the game was played out in St Kilda's half of the ground but they could not snatch a crucial score. Lenny Hayes won the Norm Smith Medal for best afield.
The rules are stupid. They should go into overtime or something, they shouldn't have to play again next week.
Having to play the whole match again is bullshit. They should just play an extra quarter.
Australia, again, only in Australia.
I think the extra game allows the table to switch...
Since Australia is upside down how do they keep the ball from falling up from the field
Since Australia is upside down how do they keep the ball from falling up from the field
magnets
Since Australia is upside down how do they keep the ball from falling up from the field
mother fuckin magic
I count no less than 60 facebook updates about this, and I only have about 90 friends..
I fucking laughed when I found this out. Fucking AFL obsessed Victorians.
You probably won't care about this unless you live in Australia, where it's pretty much a unanymous thing to care about.
That's funny, all I could wait for is it to be over and for everyone to talk about something other than this terrible sport. Also, I heard NRL grand final is on next week so it seems one terrible sport will be replaced by another. :smithicide:
I was there. I am pissed. And they want to charge me $270 for another fucking ticket. [editline]07:18PM[/editline] go the fucking sainters btw
There were 100,016 people at the game. Why weren't the extra 16 pissed? [editline]07:23PM[/editline]
You probably won't care about this unless you live in Australia, where it's pretty much a unanymous thing to care about.
I think its funny that right after the cricket scandal that this comes out.
fucking, they counted down to the first bounce using the screen, then when the siren blows, we see this: fucking [editline]07:24PM[/editline] between the grand final and australian parliament, australia is well hung
I was there and I'm fucking happy. The third grand final draw in history and I was there to see it. EDIT: Since all the corporate 'Win Grand Final Tickets" shit is over, there's more room for the true die-hard supporters. The reason we have the rules like that is because of tradition, this has happened twice before, in 1949 and 1977, and for the sake of keeping the traditions from the game's origin, the rule doesn't need to be changed, and imo, shouldn't. I love Footy, and people who don't like it, that's fine, but don't speak like it's an unenjoyable sport. If you're not into it, then don't worry about it.
Im from australia and i still think AFL is gay, I'd rather NRL.

Him and Channel 7 must be licking their lips over the extra money they're going to be making from this. That's one of the only reasons it hasn't changed - not so much tradition. It's time for a rule change - all modern sports use extra time instead of a full replay. While it's great footy keeps the tradition, it's time for them to be upgraded into the modern ages. Anyway, it's already been announced that the 2nd granny can't end in a draw. If it's equal at the end of the 4th quater, there will be two periods of extra time to decide. [editline]07:59PM[/editline] That and the Colliwoblies capt calls the replay "an absolute joke".
This.
That.

They changed that, but kept the Grand Final, because it's such a big event that having two of them is a massive financial boost and keeps some tradition.

The only reason they haven't already changed it is because of the huge financial benefit. Tradition has gone out the door with footy. They "outlaw" speccy's with the push in the back, and now they're capping interchange. There is no tradition in footy anymore. None of the players want a replay, not even the saints. It's an out of date joke.
I knew AFL was bad, but by god, not allowing extra time in a Grand Final, that's just ridiculous.
I think the no extra time rule is fair. If a Grand Final comes down to extra time and both teams are fuck tired after over two hours of flat out running around a 150 metre ground, then getting a point past a weary full back line isn't really representative of a better side. An entirely new match will show which is the better team. It may not be ideal for viewers, but in a game of over 60 points, one point shouldn't make one team definitively the better team.
You realise that 60 points isn't 60 goals, it's 6 points a goal, 1 for a goal in the outer posts.
I can't see many collingwood supports going next week, they spent all of their hard earnt centerlink payment money on the ticket and they won't have enough until after the grand final replay is over.

COLLINGWOOD skipper Nick Maxwell says replaying Saturday’s drawn grand final next week, rather than playing extra time, is an “absolute joke”. "I believe instinctively that we should have extra time" - Ross Lyon
An entirely new match will show which is the better team. They all want extra time, the AFL does not - why, because it's an easy money grab. Ticket prices once again start off from $270, and Channel Seven is rolling around in even more advertising money. Don't forget, they're now taking the NRL Grand Final pretty much head on. It's all to do with money, nothing to do with anything else. Nothing to do with tradition either. That all went out the door with AFL rule changes.
You realise that 60 points isn't 60 goals, it's 6 points a goal, 1 for a goal in the outer posts.
You realise the final score was 68 points all?
The AFL should fingerprint everyone coming into the ground and cross reference it with the police. It would seriously cut down the amount of Collingwood supporters coming in.

Overtime is used all of the time in American football. I don't care if both teams are tired, they are TRAINED to do this.
Just as well the 2 teams with the cockiest supports just got proven equal. But sucks to be the people who paid over $200 to go. Per ticket.
Somewhere in Australia, a dozen or so people just made a fucking killing on the bookies.
