As a graduate student at Harvard University, sociologist Kevin Lewis began working with a data set that tracked something that scientists had never really been able to systematically study: the earliest stages of courtship. By studying interactions in online dating, he could probe human flirtation in its natural environment in unprecedented detail. Who initiates the interaction? Who reciprocates? What happens next?
“This is just something people haven’t been able to do before because our data is on marriages or boyfriends and girlfriends. You have a couple, but you don’t see the back and forth that led to them being a couple,” said Lewis, now an assistant professor of sociology at the University of California, San Diego. “It’s like hanging out at a big nationwide bar and watching who walks up to who and asks to buy them a drink and who gets rebuffed.”
Lewis, working with data from the dating website OkCupid, was especially intrigued by a puzzling pattern in his data. In general, people were very likely to initiate an interaction with someone of their own race. But they were just as likely to respond to a message from a person from another race as their own. And in the week after replying to a person from another race, he found people were more likely to make amorous overtures to someone of another race, Lewis reported Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Lewis’ study wasn’t designed to probe the reason for these differences, but he sees a plausible mechanism in the expectations and biases we all carry around with us. Perhaps people expect rejection if they approach someone with a different racial background, so they do not reach out to those people online. Once flattered by an online advance from a person from a different racial background, however, they may rethink their bias and be more open to trying to initiate romance with people from different backgrounds.
Lewis looked only at the initial interactions between users, and can’t measure whether any of these interactions led to relationships. The increased openness to dating people of other races seems to wear off rather quickly. But Lewis said that the message of his study is an optimistic one—and it may be more broadly applicable than just thinking about racial prejudice in romantic relationships.

AYI.com, a leading online dating app with over 70 million installs, analyzed over 2.4 million interactions among its current user base in the United States to discover the likelihood of users to respond to other users based on race.
The results were eye-opening.
* The data showed that Asian women are the most preferred by all men except Asian men – who prefer Hispanic women.
* Asian, Hispanic and Caucasian women prefer Caucasian men while Caucasian men are more likely to respond to everyone but Caucasian women.
* Caucasian women are twice as likely to respond to Caucasian men than African-American men.
* African-American men are more likely to respond to women of different races but receive three times more responses from African-American women than a non-black woman.
* African-American women prefer all races over Caucasian men but are the least likely to get a response from all men.
No wonder I see Caucasian men preferring Asians more
One can argue that this helps with racism, I guess.
But it always seemed to me that white guys liking asian women was more like internalizing all the weird ways in which western society sexualizes asian women in porn and the media in general, for example.
It's never as simple as it seems.
Top left lady looks unsettling.
Bottom left lady... what are you doing, stop it.

Top left lady has crazy eyes. Bottom left lady is making fun of me.
One should also consider what type of people you often come across when on OkCupid.

Poor African-American women.
[editline]butts[/editline]
But hey, the strong independent ones don't need no man anyways.
They definitely don't want to deal with white people. Can't really blame them all things considered.

if i'm not mistaken the reason that happens, is because most men tend to find black women strong/intimidating, i wish i was kidding.
which is exactly why asian women tend to be so popular, since they're viewed as the opposite.
I wonder if the same can happen with disabled people. Its probably a bit different though, I imagine people don't disclose their disability on their profile.

A nice slab of racism makes everything better huh
It's not racism. It's sociology with a dollop of history.
Stop calling reactions to oppression reverse racism.

Imho I think the reason for the avoidance is different. If it was merely a reaction to oppresion you would see a very similar metric with AA men which you don't.
It's much more likely that parents and their surrounding culture is pushing them more to "stay at home with relationships" and even avoid whites more as opposed to internal reasons.

What have white people ever done to black people?
Oh god please don't start this
Oh god please don't start this
It's already too late.
What have white people ever done to black people?
Only good things! We brought them over to the land of freedom at no cost and gave them jobs.
Basically black people are indebted to us
Top left guy looks like he knows something about what you just ate that you don't.

It's racist either way, although to be honest if someone is dumb enough to blame white people born over 100 years after slavery was abolished do you really want to date them anyway?

Oh so this is what people mean when they talk about Tumblr Social Justice Warriors

The problem with tumblr is actually how easily conservative views spread to naive teenagers. The community is shockingly not as leftist as you'd think it is. I've seen some pretty dumb people there. The SJWs you've seen are probably the "die cis scum" ones, who are not representative of the whole website.

Because the concepts of collective responsibility, reparations, internalized social stigma etc mean nothing to you. It is not as simple as that. It never is. Study some sociology before making ridiculous claims like that.

is everything about racism and sexism for you
like when you read the internet newspaper while sipping your coffee and you hear about the milk shortages does your brain just automatically go "well no wonder considering what the color white has done to people"
person11, I think your claims would have merit if white women with black men was also small, but it's the largest interracial marriage group after white man with asian woman.

You're really fucking stupid if you don't think you're racist for saying that.

Racism and Sexism are everything to women and not white people and they have no choice in the matter. The very least a white guy can do is care about it and do whatever it takes to change the status quo. I am not trying to be morally superior by caring, I am just trying not to be an asshole.

This is the guy who said pedophilia is caused by woman acting childlike in advertising, which, according to the blog he linked to, includes pictures of woman eating fruit.

Do you really think you need to study sociology to know what any of those are? :v:
Obviously it's not as simple as saying "I didn't do it don't blame me" but a logical person is going to be able to move past it. My point is basically that if they've entrenched themselves so much in the idea that it's white people's fault and not just a certain group of white people in the past then why would you want to date them as a white person? I get that some people have this basically implanted in them socially and you're not winning any intelligence points for figuring that out, but the fact that white/black couples exist is proof that it can be overcome

Assuming that something is always true in every situation without ever looking more deeply into the matter is stupid and harmful. And assuming you know the cause behind every sociological pattern that applies to half of the population is also stupid and harmful.
There are plenty of patterns that this study brings up. Yet the moment those patterns have something to do with black women, suddenly you know what the cause is. That is asshole behaviour.
