WELLINGTON - A SPECIAL effects studio said on Friday it was in talks about filming two 'Avatar' sequels in New Zealand, as a special sitting of parliament rushed through laws to keep 'The Hobbit' in the country.
Weta Digital co-director Joe Letteri said director James Cameron had been in touch to discuss shooting the second and third parts of his sci-fi blockbuster in Wellington after 20th Century Fox confirmed the project on Wednesday.
'I know Jim would like to do that, so once we know what the story is he'd like to come down here and explore that,' Letteri told news agency NZPA, adding it was 'early days' for the films, due for release in 2014 and 2015.
Cameron redefined the art of special effects with Avatar, which took more than a decade to produce because of the advances in technology required to realize his vision. Weta, the Wellington-based special effects studio co-founded by 'The Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson, won an Oscar for its pioneering work in bringing the planet Pandora of Avatar to the big screen.
Live action shooting for Avatar took place in New Zealand before Weta added the effects that helped make it the biggest box office hit in history, with sales of US$2.8 billion (S$3.63 billion) since its opening in December 2009.
'Weta Digital is hoping that again we'll be working with Jim and Fox to actually create Pandora and to create the characters and to do all the visual effects work on the films,' Letteri said.[/quote]
Why don't they do the CGI overload like they did the first one
Hmm seems weird since the first Avatar tech demo used all CGI.
I'm not sure if I'd watch another one. I mean, the world was great - really pretty CGI. But I found the story terrible - completely generic underdog plot.
Well it costs less time and money when using real world locations.

More realistic environments, Possibly cheaper and I'm sure it's easier for the actors.

It also looks alot better.
It'll be cool to in-cooperate real life environment with special effects.
I hope this is better than the 1st one
By in New Zealand, it means filmed on a sound stage in New Zealand, or the special effects done in New Zealand.
Shit New Zealand gets everything. Not that I'm complaining.
I love the first smurf indians in the rainforest movie I cant wait for the second one
I'd rather the Marines came back and wiped those smurf Indians off the goddamn map.

The most realistic CGI moneyshots the world has ever seen.
So the bluescreen studio will be setup in New Zealand?

Don't be silly a blue backdrop would never work.
It's special effects, cgi jazz, that shit.
weta digital is a secretive sweatshop of the most talented people
The Lord of the Na'vi: The fellowship of the Hometree
The Lord of the Na'vi: The Two Avatars
The Lord of the Na'vi: The Return of Jake Soolie.
Avatar 2: My Big Fat Blue Wedding.

CGI is all done in New Zealand. aka Avatar CGI was all made in NZ.
I live in New Zealand, they wouldn't film it here. Its all the CGI being done. :3
but New Zealand isn't a giant blue screen, you crazy Cameron?

That seems to be the majority opinion from people I've talked to, I don't understand how James Cameron believed people would sympathize with the Na'Vi.

Shit, I remember when that was the opposite.

Making the humans speak Russian, German or English with British accents would've taken care of that.
Why the hell didn't the humans just look for a different deposit, anyway? Wouldn't there have to be shitloads of the stuff under/in those flying mountains?
