Government forces in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have captured Bunagana town, the main base of the M23 rebel group, residents say.
The troops entered the town on the Ugandan border in large numbers as the rebels fled, residents told the BBC.
M23 political leader Bertrand Bisimwa was earlier reported to have crossed the border into Uganda as Congolese troops advanced on his base.
...
On Monday, the UN special envoy to DR Congo, Martin Kobler, said the M23 was all but finished as a military threat in DR Congo.
His comments came after government forces captured five M23-held areas, including Rumangabo where the rebels had a big military training camp.
The government forces have been backed by a UN intervention brigade deployed earlier this year to confront the M23 and other armed groups.
Will this stop all that rape stuff going on there?

There are other rebel groups than the M23, so most likely no.
We stopped kony! Rip joseph kony 2012-2013
Honestly, I wish the UN and the US would concentrate in places like Africa instead of the Middle East that actually need outside help.

The UN has been in Africa for a while.

Afghanistan doesn't need help? Iraq didn't need help?

That doesn't make any sense.
middle east has a larger population in a smaller area than africa, you don't hear so much land disputes between african countries, so much as you hear about civil wars between tribal factions. the middle east has both limited land and civil wars amongst its people, and it just so happens to be smack dab ontop of the major trade routes, so its more of an issue than anything else

The UN operates wherever they are able to without being stonewalled by major powers like the US, UK China and Russia. They are working mighty fine as peacekeepers on Cyprus for example, and UNFICYP was founded in 1964.
They don't get a lot of publicity when they do act, and lots of the time they can't act because of national interests from various countries fucking over it. It's essentially like trying to get a whole class of kids to agree on one thing, with half the kids being given exceptional veto powers.
