BioShock developer Irrational Games is looking for an IT Manager and a Senior Programmer. Irrational Games, the folks behind the legendary BioShock series, shocked us all by announcing it was closing up shop shortly after the last BioShock: Infinite DLC shipped. Director Ken Levine said this was due to his desire to make more experimental games with a smaller team. But now, it looks like Irrational is back, as two job postings have just gone up on its official website. The first posting calls for an IT Manager - nothing too out of the ordinary here, as the description lists regular IT stuff like setting up networks and system security. On the other hand, the second posting is for a Senior Programmer, and calls for a rather specific focus on AI programming. From this information alone, we can't really discern what the studio is up to, however, the fact that the postings only recently went up means that the studio will probably be springing back into action at some time in the future
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138761-Bioshock-Dev-Irrational-Games-is-Hiring-Again What does the future hold for the return of Irrational Games?
Maybe without Levine they can actually release games ON TIME.
Maybe without Levine they can actually release games ON TIME.
yo in light of the shit we've had recently i'm more than happy to have any game delayed by a couple of months
yo in light of the shit we've had recently i'm more than happy to have any game delayed by a couple of months
I think it was Shigeru Miyamoto who once said "a bad game is bad forever" to pinpoint the importance of taking one's time, but even though the notion is somewhat downplayed by the easily-updateable (I know its not a word but w/e) nature of digital distribution for games, that first impression of the game being a buggy mess on Day 1 can stick in people's minds and make them hesitant to pre-order or buy on the release date. Rome 2 was a broken mess on launch, and now people are wary of buying on Day 1, waiting to see folks like Joe Vargas take the bullet and give the all-clear/danger siren. In terms of Irrational Games' next project without Ken at the helm, it's pretty much up in the air, but if they're working on a spiritual successor to BioShock, I imagine it would have a pretty big tonal shift from the Levine-era -Shock games, since it'd fall to another creative director to build the artistic vision of the new game.
A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.
*With the exception of Duke Nukem Forever
*With the exception of Duke Nukem Forever
that was basically a rushed game pushed into a freezer only to be thawed out 10 years later

I really get the feeling this is going to be the continuation of Irrational Games in name only and nothing else. The old studio I knew and loved for making Bioshock and System Shock 2 is still dead in my head until I see otherwise.
Bioshock 4????? Just kidding, they ended the series perfectly so there doesn't need to be a 4, but I'm still hoping they will make new games. This is one of the few studios I've enjoyed all games from.
Another Game set in the System Shock universe would be nice. I mean it has been 15 years.

What if a game is delayed AND bad?
Have you ever paid attention to Ken Levine's twitter? Dude is nuts, it's hilarious'
What if a game is delayed AND bad?
then you get watch dogs
Resurrect Looking Glass studios instead please. With the original staff.

Please bring me SWAT 5 please oh mary of satan
I for one would like some new IP's. No more Bioshock. Burial at Sea besides being a mess of retcons was at least a pretty definitive full circle ending.
Maybe without Levine they can actually release games ON TIME.
Quality over deadline. Thats how this industry should work.
Quality over deadline. Thats how this industry should work.
This is why I've got high hopes for Star Citizen, both as a game but also the giant middle finger it gives to basically the entire AAA-tier game industry, especially the EAs and Ubisofts of the world who've apparently managed to convince the general public that 30fps is desirable, not merely something to bitterly tolerate as a tradeoff for shiny graphics on shitty annual rereleases. It'll be interesting to see if games start being developed for PC first again, instead of the current trend of being designed for consoles and left crippled and puking in a ditch when it comes time to port to considerably-more-capable machines. I mean, look at this: [t]http://images.gamersyde.com/image_star_citizen-26795-2615_0001.jpg[/t] It's almost 2015 and it's time for games to reflect that.
a whole lot of words I mean, look at this: [t]http://images.gamersyde.com/image_star_citizen-26795-2615_0001.jpg[/t] It's almost 2015 and it's time for games to reflect that.
I think it's much too soon to use Star Citizen as some sort of shining beacon of game development when we really don't have any idea of how long it may take to develop or if they will actually deliver on all of their (extremely grand) promises.
[t]https://i.imgur.com/TTEwBdO.jpg[/t] We have a pretty good idea of how long it's going to take. Sure these dates might slide a bit, and I fully expect the PU alpha to miss Christmas 2015 and be early 2016 with beta a bit later, but you know what? A game of this level of fidelity takes time, and Chris Roberts chooses doing things properly over doing them fast. They have delivered so far on the milestones they've reached, even if they weren't always exactly on time with them, and they are very open about giving the community a good picture of what they are working on at any given moment. They're quite transparent with their development process because they know that confidence in them is absolutely everything, and the only reason they just broke $63 million in crowdfunding is because players trust them. The ambition of the game is limited by the development; CR has basically said, on multiple occasions, that if crowdfunding stopped dead tomorrow they would still be able to deliver everything they've promised so far because they expand the game only when the money to do it is in the bank. Is it possible that this massively ambitious game will fall flat and we'll see features start falling out of the list? Sure, but so far, it doesn't seem that likely. Keep in mind that some of their grandiose plans are definitely on the longer term, so they're sensible enough to prioritize certain things for launch and other things for post-launch expansion, and I don't think anyone can fault them for having a realistic view of how many things they can reasonably do at once without going way over budget. The game is being developed for a 10-year lifespan of active content support, so they don't need to force themselves to deliver everything immediately. I trust Chris Roberts because he has twenty years of delivering solid games behind him, and he's been open and transparent about Star Citizen's goals and ongoing development progress.
Bioshock 4????? Just kidding, they ended the series perfectly so there doesn't need to be a 4, but I'm still hoping they will make new games. The Systemshock and Bioshock series were and still are the bomb.
I always think the whole "the last game in the series was great, that's why it needs to stop here" argument is ridiculous. If they want to make another great game, and they do, who are we to tell them what to do? Don't you think it better if developers continually try to make better games and greater experiences for the player, instead of stopping "just because it's a good end to the series"? Really, that argument never made the slightest sense to me.
System shock 3 ffs, do it now!
Bioshock 4????? Just kidding, they ended the series perfectly so there doesn't need to be a 4, but I'm still hoping they will make new games. The Systemshock and Bioshock series were and still are the bomb.
i=I agree, Bioshock 2 was a great ending to the series.
Maybe without Levine they can actually release games ON TIME.
I would rather have a game get delayed, worked on, and better for it than have one on release date that's full of bugs and cut content. The lack of patience you demonstrate with your post is a window into one reason why AAA gaming has fallen on its face in recent years. Nobody cares about quality, they just want it right effing now.
Bioshock 4????? Just kidding, they ended the series perfectly
are you referring to the ending of Infinite or the ending of BoS? because both of their endings were trash made notable by twists.

Not in the age of update-over-the-internet consoles that make developers go "fuck it we'll fix it in post"
Please bring me SWAT 5 please oh mary of satan
this guy knows what's up I don't play videogames anymore, but for SWAT5, I'll make an exception
SWAT 5 plz
I really want System Shock 3, but after the cockwaffle of retardedly simple gameplay and pretentious chinwanking story that was Bioshock Infinite, I think i'll pass.
You need to calm down
