Victoria Anderson in 1997, just weeks before the procedure that caused her to have a stroke.
Victoria Anderson of Louisbourg was 23 years old when a procedure in Halifax went terribly wrong. She was left in a condition where she is "locked in", a condition she remains in today, 15 years later.
Anderson and her family filed a medical malpractice suit against the Queen Elizabeth ll Health Sciences Center and two of their doctors. Lawyer Ray Wagner has been handling the case for the Anderson family. He says a financial settlement has been made but he won't specify the amount. He did tell CBC News it was in the millions of dollars.
Court documents show Anderson brought the legal action against the two doctors alleging their negligent attempts at a central line placement caused her to suffer a stroke, resulting in "locked in" syndrome. The documents indicate Dr. Shirl Ann Gee was found to have undertaken the central line placement in a negligent fashion, not assuring that the plaintiff's head was placed in the proper location for the procedure.
"A needle was placed too deeply into the neck," said Wagner. "That caused a rupture of one of the major arteries going to the base of your brain stem."
The Court determined that it was more probable than not that the doctor inadvertently punctured the vertebral artery twice during the procedure, giving rise to Anderson's stroke.
The other doctor was absolved of liability, given that he was acting under the supervision of the more senior defendant and there was no evidence his attempts at the procedure caused any injury which could have given rise to Anderson's stroke. The case against the hospital was dropped.
The only muscles Victoria Anderson can voluntarily move are those controlling her eyes, yet she remains cognitively intact.
"The day she had the stroke, we all had one," said Victoria's mother Mildred Anderson.
In 1997, she was the mother of a young daughter and was planning to get married. Her daughter is now 17 years old.
"It'll be a big change," said her daughter Danielle LeMoine. "It will change our lives forever. I guess now we'll have tears of joy as opposed to tears of sadness."
I've known Danielle for years, we were childhood friends and all. Every time I seen the condition her mother was in I felt terrible, a little bit angry too. This is quite big news to our community as we only have 1000+ residents. They're lives were changed forever, and now they are changing again in a more positive way. I cannot begin to express myself, they deserve this more than any words could ever describe. I wasn't sure where to post this, I just wanted to share this story with you guys. I'm so glad they finally got closure, it shouldn't have taken this long at all. What happened to her mother can't be changed but at least now someone has been held responsible for her suffering. Thank you all for taking a look at this. Cheers.

Awful story with some positivity at the end. I can't imagine the rage she and her family have felt all these years.
That's my hospital. Makes me worried.
I have a family friend going through a lawsuit with malpractice right now as well.
I don't know the full details, but all I know about it is that they could have saved her legs had the doctor on residency or whatever it was not literally drinking on the fucking shift.

Oh shit I forgot you're from Nova Scotia as well, hey there bud.
You're hospital in Halifax is far superior than the one we have here in Cape Breton, that's what really worries me, I have 2 cousins with Cystic Fibrosis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cystic_fibrosis) and they're constantly being rushed down to Halifax.
