Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system went on sale on October 26th, and the company has just announced it has already sold four million upgrade copies. At a keynote address in Seattle today, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed the first Windows 8 statistics — four million upgrade copies over the first weekend of sales. Ballmer mentioned the launch of Surface, but did not reveal any specific sales figures for that particular device.

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said on Tuesday the company has sold 4 million upgrades to Windows 8, signaling a strong start for its new operating system which launched on Friday.
Ballmer, speaking at a meeting for software developers at Microsoft's headquarters near Seattle, said hundreds of millions of Windows systems would be sold over the next year, and the company was seeing strong interest from business users.
Ballmer already said on Monday that Windows 8 was outselling the previous version, Windows 7, at the same stage after launch three years ago.
remember these are upgrade sales not sales to OEM's like Dell or HP
Remember those people who said that windows 8 will be a failure in the beta stages?
How's it going guys
how much of this is due to windows 8 being 60% cheaper than its predecessor for everyone that owns windows 7?
I'm sure Windows 8 will be great for a lot of people, but I'm not going to upgrade because it doesn't do a single thing I care about that Windows 7 doesn't do.
I don't blame them, upgrading is pretty damn cheap, especially when you get a new 7 laptop/use the promo code trick to make it even cheaper.
I plan on using W7 for as long as I used XP. Its just.. right.
I paid $48.02 for Windows 8 Pro....
Purchase of the year!
I'll be waiting for Windows 10.
I'll be waiting for Windows 10.
Why 10?
windows 8 is really good.
I used Installed Windows 8 for free on from Microsoft Dreamspark a few days before official launch.
Didn't mind the new stuff they added. But I kept getting blue screens and shit and it eventually killed one of my Solid State drives, and my external USB drive controller/enclosure. I don't think its coincidence since I have had these hard drives running for a few years on Windows 7 and they all start fucking up and crashing a few weeks after installing Windows 8. Glad I didn't pay for that shit.
Should i get this?
Should i get this?
if you're looking for just a speedier windows 7 then yes
if you're looking for a vastly improved OS with a billion new features then no
it's probably because of its price - I bought windows 8 but i'm sure i wouldn't have if it was $180 like win 7

Thanks for the help, I was skeptical from the start about how good it would be, and i saw the price and had to ask about it.
Why 10?
Because I refuse to pay for a service pack with some 'refined' UI every other year.

And it'll be a different case with windows 10?
there's no reason to use 7 over 8 unless there is somehow an incompatible application
And it'll be a different case with windows 10?
Because if I wait it will be more worth it, aka more content.
I gotta say, good for them. All the hate that they received for the looks of it, now it's really turned out to be successful.
Who knows, maybe by the time Windows 10 is out Linux will have gained some ground on the gaming front. I hope.

I don't like Windows 8's multi-monitor support on my desktop.
I've run Windows 8 on my laptop for the decreased boot / shutdown times and overall speediness of it, but I'd never upgrade on my desktop because:
1. Windows 8 is somewhat reliant on the corners of the screen for menus
2. Boot times don't make an ounce of difference on a computer that runs 24/7
3. Metro looks somewhat awkward because it doesn't extend across both screens
Because if I wait it will be more worth it, aka more content.
Pretty much the sports game approach?

This is sort of a non-issue, since all those menu's can be brought up with Winkey shortcuts.

I'd say go for it. And if you don't like it, you can always just downgrade back to 7.
How are the retail prices? Are they still $200 for Professional?
It's $40 or $15
It's $40 or $15
Isn't that upgrade pricing?
how much of this is due to windows 8 being 60% cheaper than its predecessor for everyone that owns windows 7?
Def this I think. It has a much lower barrier of entry. It's being bundled all over, it's a simple upgrade for many people and so many promotions can make or break it.

Windows 7 had the same deals when it first launched. Around the same prices as 7. The only thing missing is the "Family Pack" that 7 had.
If you bought a computer before June 26th, 2009 then you could get a 7 upgrade for free, not $15. Or between June 26th and July 11th, 2009, you were able to prepurchase Windows 7 at $49.99.
