Valve boss Gabe Newell has called his company's assumptions over Xbox Live "such a train wreck".
Speaking to our colleagues at PC Gamer in its recently-published interview, Newell said one of Valve's failures over the years was to assume that Microsoft would improve Xbox Live so it could update its games regularly for free.
When asked if its mistake on Xbox Live was to assume Microsoft would let Valve update its games more often, Newell said:
"We thought that there would be something that would emerge, because we figured it was a sort of untenable... Oh yeah, we understand that these are the rules now, but it's such a train wreck that something will have to change.
"That's why we're really happy with the current situation with the PS3," he said. "We're solving it now in a way that is going to work for our customers, rather than assuming something is going to emerge later that will allow us to fix this."
Microsoft has a notoriously closed approach to its online service compared to PSN, with developers allowed as little as one free title update (though there are exceptions) and limitations on the amount of free game content they can release.
In fact, in its recent paid-for Red Dead Redemption add-on Rockstar included all the free-of-charge content from its previous Free Roam pack, "due to the platform network's restrictions on numbers of free packs we can give away."
Valve told CVG last month that it'd love to put its Steamworks dev suite on Xbox Live, but Microsoft seemingly isn't budging.
Valve's Erik Johnson echoed Newell's comments: "The lack of updates on the 360, for TF2, is also a total failure," he said. "Those are the ones that sting the worst because... it got all the way through to customers. It's like a bug. If you fix a bug before it ever ships, it's pretty cheap. If you ship it and then fix it, it's really expensive. Those ones are really bad."
In particular It's a huge turnaround for Newell, a man who once called PS3 "a waste of everybody's time" - something for which he later apologised for to owners of the console.
Why is my steam constantly slow and freezing up.
I'm really not surprised by this. Microsoft makes it a pain in the ass for companies to deliver content how they want, and it benefits no one except MS' pockets as usual. It's totally the opposite of VALVe, where they aim for customer satisfaction, constant production of free high-quality content, and maintenance of their games.

It was made by valve. What do you expect.
It was made by valve. What do you expect.
It's the best there is at the moment, so I wouldn't consider it shit.

"Steam is the most wonderful thing since sliced bread"
I can post baseless opinions too.

That opinion was based on how slow steam is.

Holy shit, I've travelled back in time!
"Unoptimized piece of shit".
I'm rather happy with the features I get - not to mention it's free.
I can easily add and ignore friends in an easily accessible list.
I can easily browse games of any desired category, specials, featured games and so on. It's like walking into a store - only virtual.
My games are always up to date.
Patches are included with the games I buy so that I don't need to enter an obscure website to find a low quality mirror to download a patch - i.e. what we used to do to get Battlefield patches.
Steam has a really nice, typographically correct, easy-to-follow support section and from what I've heard their support team is easy to get along with.
Then, on a side note, VAC. It is, in my experience, the most powerful anti-cheat add-in ever. Let me be blunt as fuck and compare it to Punkbuster. Punkbuster has prevented me from entering any Battlefield Bad Company 2 servers too many times to count. It was said on some obscure website I had to go to another obscure website to download the newest version (why wasn't this included with BC2?) and install it. So I did and yet it continued to bug me.
Steam is the digital media distribution platform and it cannot and will not be surpassed by anything at any time.
Steam is an amazing content distributor. Fuck the haters.
Gabe Newell used media.
It's super effective.

Something can be the best of the moment and still be shit, really. (Not that I think Steam is crap, I think it's pretty good).
I was quite happy when I started PC gaming and got a free DLC for l4d2, and I was quite shocked on the contrary.
M$ Points < Steam.
VALVe has a complete monopoly on the PC game market and they are doing a damn good job of it.
I think Gabe has the reputation girth to talk shit about other companies.
I don't know about the rest of you, but when I'm downloading off steam it usually goes at 2 mb per second, I can have a full retail game in under 20 minutes. What's not to like?
Wow, the peoples in here are poor fucks with a shit computer for steam to being so slow they complain like that.

Steam is far better than Xbox live though. Common known fact.
With all of his hate against Micro$oft and (previously)$ony, I wonder what he thinks of Nintendo?
ITT:smug PC gamers
xbox live isn't bad

Wow, not everyone can afford a good computer. Right now I am on a shitty laptop and can not afford a pc at all. Rich fuck.
His body is a fucking train-wreck.
