Disclaimer: I saw this in the metro this morning. Sorry for shitty sources, once BBC post their coverage I'll edit it in. http://www.ibtimes.com/war-afghanistan-taliban-massacres-100-afghan-soldiers-cops-militants-advance-south-2431289 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/reuters/article-3836068/Taliban-fighters-ambush-kill-dozens-retreating-Afghan-troops.html http://tribune.com.pk/story/1198273/taliban-fighters-ambush-kill-dozens-retreating-afghan-troops/
The taliban ambushed and killed at least 90 afghan police officers and soldiers as they withdrew from a siege near Lashkar Gah, Hlemand. It is the heaviest of recent losses by government forces.
That was the entire coverage in the paper. 90 people dead is a 1" square on page 9.
Taliban militants ambushed and killed around 100 Afghan police and soldiers earlier this week as they tried to retreat, the heaviest losses suffered by government forces during months of fierce clashes near the capital of southern Helmand province.

Taliban fighters ambushed and killed around 100 Afghan police and soldiers Tuesday as they attempted to retreat following heavy losses in the southern province of Helmand, Reuters reported. The group of soldiers and police were viciously attacked, leaving few survivors. An entire battalion was essentially wiped out, according to surviving army soldier Faiz Mohammad. "We were one batallion," he told Reuters. "Except me and two others, no one came out alive."
Really grim. It's still a war there, these are young guys getting slaughtered. It's practically ignored in the news and people seem to be under the impression that Afghanistan is safe (saying people fleeing war in Afghanistan aren't valid refugees). I totally forgot about the taliban. They just sound like a telecommunication company and because of that not that threatening but weren't they at war with that other group? IS IS.
It'd be very nice to have headline tell where this happened.
It'd be very nice to have headline tell where this happened.
Not the first time mdeciever has done this. Look at his thread history for "terror attack kills x people"
How the fuck did they get wiped out like that?
How the fuck did they get wiped out like that?
Successful ambushes have a tendency to do that.
Are the Taliban against ISIS?
Successful ambushes have a tendency to do that.
I'm aware of that but still fucking 90+
Fucking appalling that we'll throw a shitfit whenever British troops are killed in action (so they should, just not exclusively them) but won't lift a finger or give a shit that these bastards are killing Afghans in the dozens. In the end, it's not "us" or the West that's losing - it's the people who have to live through this shitty environment.
(User was banned for this post ("Misleading headline" - Big Dumb American))
How's this title misleading?
How's this title misleading?
Mod added words "Afghani" and "Taliban". Before that it was way ambiguous, a good headline gives some basic information regarding on "who", "where" and so on.
What a clusterfuck that region of the planet is. We're fighting isis, russia's fighting isis, taliban is fighting isis, They're fighting isis, afgan army is fighting isis/fighting taliban, we're fighting asad, Russia's backing asad, who is fighting isis, isis is running away from isis, we're fighting isis.... am I missing anything
How the fuck did they get wiped out like that?
With a bit of advanced planning by the enemy. The enemy plans their attack, allowing for a predetermined path of retreat. Then they position a force for ambushing the retreat. Then they begin the fighting and herd the forces into the predetermined path. If you're doing it right, almost nothing is random. If you're planning to attack, you'd want to ask yourself "What if they are losing and attempt to retreat?" then plan for that. Plan for what if YOU'RE losing and want to retreat. Plan for what if the ambush fails. Plan for as much as you can. The side that plans for the least amount of what ifs is the side that gets screwed most.
am I missing anything
the SDF, al-nursa front, and the syrian rebels, who all have different motives and are fighting eachother
Mod added words "Afghani" and "Taliban". Really sucks that this happened though. All this pointless waste of life over some paradoxical religious fundamentalist bullshit.
I'm aware of that but still fucking 90+
The thing about ambushes is that unless you have a competent and coolheaded commander who can keep troops somewhat maintained and disciplined, you'll almost inevitably have your forces fall into panic and rout.

It's obvious that the enemy planned shit, but we're talking about this particular situation.

Holy shit, I haven't heard of such massive ambush with a ton of casualties since the war in my country and Bosnia. From the government forces, that is.
Usually when the casualties are this high it's not so much how well the ambush was exicuted but rather how quickly the unit ambushed fell apart. I was never there so I can't speak first hand, but plenty of my buddies would tell me how worthless the Afghan regulars were. Of course you had those that gave a damn, but a vast majority didn't. They tended to rather smoke weed all day and half ass whatever training they did. It's not that they recieved poor training, US military advisors were there to do it, they just couldn't do anything in regards to discipline or corrective measure. That was entirely left Afghan commanders who really didn't give a shit. It comes to no surprise to me that their formation completely and utterly crumbled; you could have the greatest commanders in the world but if the soldiers can't properly handle the situation from being lazy the whole things going to fall apart.
But how did THEY get wiped out?
