She will be South Korea's first female leader. Votes are still being counted, but Mr Moon has admitted defeat. Turnout was high in a poll dominated by economic and social welfare issues. Ms Park will replace her party colleague Lee Myung-bak. He is stepping down as the law requires after his five-year term. Combined figures from the networks released after polls closed gave Ms Park 50.1% of the vote over Mr Moon's 48.9%. "This is a victory brought by the people's hope for overcoming crisis and economic recovery," she told supporters in the capital Seoul. From the moment polls opened at 06:00 on Wednesday (21:00 GMT on Tuesday), millions of South Koreans queued to cast their ballots despite freezing temperatures. Ms Park's supporters cheered as poll figures emerged. Both bolstered and dogged by the legacy of her father, who built South Korea's economy while crushing dissent, she apologised in September for human rights abuses under his administration. Mr Moon of the Democratic United Party is a former human rights lawyer who served under former President Roh Moo-hyun. He was briefly jailed by Ms Park's father in the 1970s. Both candidates put forward broadly similar policies, promising to boost social welfare spending, close the gap between the rich and poor and rein in the family-run giant conglomerates known as chaebol. On the issue of North Korea, which did not feature heavily in the campaign despite its recent rocket launch, both candidates promised more engagement with Pyongyang - though, in Ms Park's case, more cautiously than her rival.
Hurray
that's nice, good for them!

"A bad day for women's right in korea, there's nothing worse than an ultaconservative woman as president of an already overtly sexist country. The fact she s a woman does not mean anything; the fact she s the daughter of an unrepented fascist (yes yes, admirer of hitler and all that) dictator does. The fact that she used the figure of his father to get to where she is now is even more important" So claims a Redditor

They elected an ultra-conservative rightist and a daughter of a dictator. Yet facepunch filled with leftists cheers at her success?
Ultra conservative
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Geun-hye#Political_positions
In a 2012 survey by Korean Research which assessed the political stance of 12 potential presidential candidates of South Korea, Park was considered the most conservative candidate.[26][2] Her conservative, market-oriented political stance was well reflected in her campaign pledge for 2008 presidential bid to cut tax, reduce regulation, and establish strong law and order.[27] Since 2009, however, Park started to focus more on welfare issues, advocating customized welfare services to Korean people.[27]
though using 'daughter of a dictator' is a horrible ad-hominem and it's not really relevant. judge her by her policies not by her appearance.
Wow that's progressive.

Franco brought Spain a shit ton of money inflow after he stopped trying to be self-sustaining (mostly due to Technocrat involvment, but eh). They still imprisoned/killed a lot of people.
Her 2008 pledges though, were equal to the ones of republicans. Therefore extremely conservative. So it's possible she used populism to get into the office, nothing stops her from pursuing her old conservative policies.
Nobody here reads past the title, Just like a regular news site.
truth be told the actual excerpt from the article posted here only mentions the fact that she was the daughter of a dictator and nothing else [editline]21st December 2012[/editline]
-can't think of a good starcraft reference.-
How about... Since they voted for an ultra conservative, they will not be allowed to play any SC titles that came after Brood War? No? Not witty enough?
I'm sick of all this sort of 'first woman to become president' bullshit. Politics SHOULD have nothing to do with the sex of a leader, and more to do with their competency of actually leading a country. Too bad a lot of people only vote based on face-value.
I wonder if Facepunch would've been equally cheerful if a female Mitt Romney became the first female president in the US, because that's the situation we've got in South Korea.

Truly an excellent source of information with fair and balanced commentary by the smartest of redditors. And by that I mean faaaaaaaart here's an excellent post that destroys that post, most of those comments, and a lot of this thread as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/circlebroke/comments/154p6c/the_armchair_politicians_of_rworldnews_weigh_in/
Clicked to see a pic of some young sexy female asian. Did not get what was expected, which is my bad...
Sure, it's nice that a woman is now president, but frankly I'm more disappointed than not because of her stances. Judge the news based on the candidate's positions, not gender, race, sexual orientation, or religion.
