World DRAM prices are set to rocket as news comes in that Hynix FABs 1 and 2 have been engulfed in a ball of flame following a huge chemical explosion. Hynix makes 30% of the world’s memory in this area, and now it will lose half its production, so world production will drop by 15%. Reports are still coming in, but the effects are immediate – with memory prices already shooting up by 10% in the first hour after reports started. holy ballshit i needed to upgrade my RAM too oh well more money for food i guess heh glad no-one was killed
I've just checked ebuyer and I can't see any major price hikes yet, someone buy a load of sticks while they are cheap and ebay them for the new higher price once the prices change?
Well shit, this is why relying on only a few manufacturers to serve the global market is a bad fucking idea.
And I was planning on buying another 4 gigs. fuck [editline]5th September 2013[/editline] It's the hard-drive fiasco all over again.
Well shit, I'm glad that I upgraded to DDR3 not too long ago.
Be quick if you need to upgrade ram before the price change hits
Be quick if you need to upgrade ram before the price change hits
Prices have already risen by 15% here since this morning
I wonder if this will affect the PS4, Xbox One, and new smart phones
I wonder if this will affect the PS4, Xbox One, and new smart phones
The prices are probably set by a contract.

Good thing you can buy ram used.

Jumped on ebuyer and grabbed myself a 8gb DDR3 as soon as I saw this thread.

The amount of capital you need to put behind a new plant and make it profitable is astronomical.

Costs about 7 billion dollars per FAB according to the assumption of Rock's Law (Moore's Second Law)
Damn that sucks. Good thing I have 4GB of unused DDR3 at the moment along with my current 8GB being used if I ever want to upgrade.
buying my computer in literally 3 weeks. harddrive just went up too. i- i-
just download free ram r-tards augh don't you know anything about compoters
Last time I did that I got a virus.
I ordered some from ebuyer 2 days ago, seems like it was good timing as a few prices have been put up as well as the ones I bought now showing out of stock.
Last time I did that I got a virus.
That's because you didn't download the free 100% virus remover
Update:
South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix Inc said on Wednesday a fire at its Wuxi, China, plant caused no "material" damage to critical chip-fabrication equipment, and it expects to resume production shortly. "Currently, there is no material damage to the fab equipment in the clean room, thus we expect to resume operations in a short time period so that overall production and supply volume would not be materially affected," company spokesman Seongae Park said in a statement.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/04/china-hynix-idUSL2N0H013R20130904?irpc=932
And then the shitstorm ended...
Update: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/04/china-hynix-idUSL2N0H013R20130904?irpc=932
Haha I bet the people who just bought ram to sell at a higher price on eBay are kicking themselves now
