A Vietnamese beta tester has leaked Dota 2′s entire game client, as well as all of its files, to the Internet. The leak appears to be playable – but do you really want to risk having your Steam account blocked just so you can play an illegal leak? Besides, you can’t even play online! What’s Dota without online play? Nothing. In any case, the leak is already being datamined, and people have found some wondrous things – from the placeholders Valve uses for their spell icons, to the one phrase every single hero has in common (Perhaps a secret message? “Shitty Wizards” does resemble “Fart Cops”, does it not? Is Valve trying to tell us the name of their next game?), all the speech files of all of the heroes, every single backstory of every single backstory, a massive pastebin containing just about every caption string in the whole game, a test model for a lovely hat, various in-game models, all the way to… some very interesting code. Let’s take a look at that one right now.
/src/game/server/ep3/weapon_icegun.cpp
/src/game/server/ep3/weaponizer_concrete.cpp
/src/game/server/ep3/weaponizer_liquid.cpp
/src/game/server/ep3/weaponizer_metal.cpp
/src/game/server/ep3/weapon_flamethrower.cpp
Oof! Oh, damn. Be right back!
Okay, got my new underpants on. What’s this? An ice gun? A flame thrower? Holy crap! New weapons? And a mention of the mysterious Weaponizer weapon? Did it really survive the Directed Design Experiments? The code can’t be that old – Dota 2 only began development in late 2009 or early 2010. There’s more interesting stuff in the links above - some sort of in-game store featuring bundles, gear, tools and effects, as well as an option to view “new” items. I don’t know about you, but that sounds a lot like micro-transaction. Could Dota 2 have that as well? And does that mean it’ll be a F2P title? Christ, who knows at this point?
There’s also some code labelled “sob”, with mentions of ”func_nebula”, “sob_server_ship_system” and “sob_flightplan”. Could Valve be working on some sort of space flight game? Is it Gunman Chronicles 2? Ricochet 2? The long-awaited Fart Cops? This SOB thing sounds interesting, even if it’s acronymized just like “son of a bitch”.
In any case, you won’t be getting any links to the leak from us, and we advise you not to download it. Sure, for Valve it might be great for feedback purposes, but it’s still a loss for them and the beta testers, so we’re not touching the thing. Still, I have to admit that this stuff has me quite excited for Dota 2… and, yes, Half-Life 2: Episode Three. A flamethrower! Would you imagine that.

I have just fond this, I won't state that it's true/fake
I WANT TO BELIEVE.
I always wondered if the "Fart Cops" letter was actually written by Valve or if RPS wrote it.
as if
Nonononononono
NO
oh god this is what you get for trusting competition gamers Valve
THIS IS WHAT YOU GET.
I always wondered if the "Fart Cops" letter was actually written by Valve or if RPS wrote it.
RPS obviously.
We've been rather busy, in your absence, Mr Freeman
Maybe sob_ is the first level of Episode Three, where Eli dies, so its like, all sob stories and shit. Flight plan for the helicopter, all that...
I want to believe... :'(
/sob
Fucking ninja, was busy searching around to see if was already posted.
Can't wait to see advisors burst into flames or frozen into small ice cubes, or some variation of those two or mabye even a combonation by the new weaponizer!
I really fucking hope the EP3 code part is true.

lol i used to like valve
Wait, if we're seeing this much content about episode 3, we might be getting as many weapons as we had in Half Life 1, maybe even more.

don't you remember that hl2 had like 10 weapons that never made it into the final game?
I really hope Valve is forced to announce the game, if this is true.
don't you remember that hl2 had like 10 weapons that never made it into the final game?
And they were totally awesome
I used to play Obsidiam Conflict, just to get access to those
don't you remember that hl2 had like 10 weapons that never made it into the final game?
True enough, but all of them look awesome and should make it.
Damnit, I messed up the title a little
Why did I type Dota 2 episode leaked?

Knowing Valve it wont affect gameplay at all.
Knowing Valve it wont affect gameplay at all.
yeh tf2's gameplay wasn't affected at all
I really hope Valve is forced to announce the game, if this is true.
it's not forced to announce it, they could just ignore this and keep on going.
Lets hope they don't backtrack and re-do the entire game like they did with Half-Life 2 (Episode 3 code leak).
A "Weaponizer" would be the next logical step. People loved the Gravity Gun because it could turn anything into a weapon. It could be used very creatively and its use could change a lot based on the terrain/what things you can turn into tools.
Sounds Valve analyzed that and thought "how can we make it even better?". If it's real. Why a DOTA2 tester has Episode 3 code is beyond me, but the gaming industry moves in mysterious ways.
What's to ignore? Does anyone actually believe these have anything to do with Episode 3? Just stop and think rationally about it for a minute and you'll realize that thinking so is just wrong.

The HL2 leak had very little effect on it's development since most of the HL2 leak's content was already scraped.

/src/game/server/ep3/weapon_icegun.cpp
if anything

Valve's code and source materials all very interrelated, and things from one project will make their way into seemingly random ones. The Mac beta contained a semi-working Linux client that could get as far as logging in and loading a few things, and pretty much every game references common files from projects made at the same time.

Maybe an engine update that is the same for Ep3 and DotA 2?
