• Yet ANOTHER American citizen detained in North Korea for "trying to overthrow the state"
North Korea said on Sunday it had detained another US citizen over unspecified hostile acts. The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim Hak Song had worked for the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology before he was held on Saturday. “A relevant institution is now conducting detailed investigation into his crimes,” the KCNA said. On Wednesday, North Korea announced the detention of an accounting instructor at the same university, Kim Sang Duk – also known as Tony Kim – for “acts of hostility aimed at overthrowing the country”. Kim Sang Duk was arrested at the Pyongyang International Airport on 22 April, the KCNA said. It said he was “intercepted for committing criminal acts” to overthrow the North’s government, but didn’t elaborate. On Sunday, the KCNA did not say whether the two cases were connected. In Washington, the state department said it was aware of the report of the new detention and that “the security of US citizens is one of the department’s highest priorities”.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/07/north-korea-detains-us-citizen
Do these hostages ever get rescued? Because I think any foreigner held by North Korea is a hostage.
Why do Americans keep going there? They hate Americans.
Do these hostages ever get rescued? Because I think any foreigner held by North Korea is a hostage.
You think the US is willing to send spec ops to rescue them risking full blown war?
Why do Americans keep going there? They hate Americans.
The last two that have been arrested were South Koreans with American citizenship. People really need to stop going to North Korea, it's just asking for trouble
People really need to stop going to North Korea, it's just asking for trouble
If anything stop supporting and normalizing a brutal totalitarian regime that wants to nuke your country with your tourism patronage.
My god no one reads the article The guy who was arrested this time was not a tourist
I have read it and I still think people should stop going to North Korea. It seems like it always ends badly for people.
Why do Americans keep going there? They hate Americans.
Speaking generally, people are curious to a fault I guess. A lot of people on this very forum will tell you they would gladly take a trip to North Korea to 'see what it's like'. Even if they only get a guided tour of a fake North Korea that doesn't exist. Even if there's every chance they could be locked up for the rest of their lives and subjected to some of the worst conditions on Earth if they even survive for much longer. People are fucking stupid basically

Really nice to see you speak with authority about NK tourism when you know shit all.
It went fucking great for me.
You're not American.
Why is travel to North Korea not banned? [editline]8th May 2017[/editline]
It went fucking great for me.
Why is travel to North Korea not banned?
IIRC It's not really legal to ban travel to any nation, however the US government has numerous advisements to not go to a number of places.
You're not American.
No, he's Australian. Which is another country NK has threatened to nuke. Your point? https://www.aol.com/article/news/2017/04/23/north-korea-threatens-australia-with-nuclear-strike-over-toeing-line-with-us-alliance/22051796/

You're a terrible person if you're giving money to North Korea. In addition to the dystopian level of terror they commit domestically, they have also kidnapped people outside of NK.

Oh, ever watched a game of soccer? The blood of hundreds of slaves in Qatar is on your hands. You're a terrible person if you've ever used a plastic bag and are pretty much directly supporting the house of saud. There's a pretty good chance that the clothes you have are made in NK, just replaced with a made in China tag. The amount of cash that goes into the regime from my tourism is pretty much fucking nothing.

They're shit aswell but it's a completely whole different level of trash.
yeah lmao cause China and Dubai are comparable to North Korea. They're shit aswell but it's a completely whole different level of trash.
Who fucking cares? You're still contributing to human suffering by your logic. Why are you assuming my tourism money went straight to the camps?
Who fucking cares? You're still contributing to human suffering by your logic. Why are you assuming my tourism money went straight to the camps?
i think its fairly apparent your money is not being used to improve the quality of life of the (average) citizens of north korea
You all need to chillax, going to NK may seem dumb but don't try to act like it's immoral and that north korean "tourism" is having any impact on the suffering going on. You probably fund more suffering by buying clothes. Unless I'm horribly mistaken, in which case correct me.
Who fucking cares? You're still contributing to human suffering by your logic. Why are you assuming my tourism money went straight to the camps?
China hasn't been constantly threatening their neighbours and is actually a relatively stable country. Also do you really think your tourism money is going to go anywhere other than into the military, government, or basically anything that doesn't help the actual citizens of the country?
and they laughed at me when I said going to NK for fun was a bad idea say it's a good idea to this guy, fuckers

At least boycott the Qatar world cup, and don't go to Dubai either. Not using oil would be hard though so scratch that one out. How do you feel knowing your money went to enslaving people? [editline]8th May 2017[/editline] And whether or not you travel to china is up to you, but I personally wouldn't travel to Russia as long as Putin is in charge or as long as they're still keeping gays down
I get the feeling that Western tourists going there and exposing NK to the western world might be a good thing in the long run. If they didn't make any tourist money and closed themselves off completely that seems like it would be pretty bad.
No, he's Australian. Which is another country NK has threatened to nuke. Your point? They hate Americans, we are the worst thing in the world to them.
Whatever tourism money NK does make, I sincerely doubt it's enough to register on any national account ledger.
IMO even if you gave $10 it's $10 too much. The point here is that there is basically nothing to gain from visiting, other than if you go you'll see what you'll know you'll see - a fairly empty, curated part of NK. I'd rather go to a more beautiful place with my travel money, not feel worried about being kidnapped by a terrorist state, and not have a guilty conscience either.
If you want to see what North Korea has to offer you only have to look up the numerous travel articles or YouTube documentaries. Don't put a cent in their pocket. I believe there was an interesting article about NK in a British Airways magazine I read on the plane around January actually.
