James Cameron's "Avatar" I Want Your Opinions! - General

Dear Facepunch community (or whoever happens to come upon this desperate attempt at an "A"), I am writing a story on the movie "Avatar" and what people think of it for my High School Journalism class. I DESPERATELY need credible sources for my paper and I only have a friend's opinion. Now this is where you (the community) come in. Please answer one or two or however-many-you-feel-like-answering of the eight questions below and say your name and occupation (or if you feel uncomfortable, an Alias and fake occupation will do) along with the question number you answered. I think it looks like a really cool movie. I'm into science-fiction movies, especially ones where they go to other planets. Also don't make us answer a list of questions...

All I have to say is, CGI is way way way too over used these days, and "avatar" takes that to the next level. CGI ruins good movies.

1. It looks pretty good, a little CG-heavy, however. 2. As long as it's not a cesspool of CG and special effects (ala Matrix: Reloaded), it should be a fairly decent film. Michael, Student.

It looks pretty cool... I'm into science fiction and fantasy fiction, and the film looks like a decent mesh of the two. Combining space marines with elf-like fantasy creatures? Sounds cool. I saw the previews yesterday and decided to check out the movie online. Judging by the "alien" character names and the fact that the studio hired linguists to create a constructed language for the aliens, it seems like they're putting a lot of work into world-building and characterization of their alien race, something I feel is very important in any sci-fi or fantasy work. I was surprised to see some actors I recognized in it. Like Michelle Rodriguez (aka Ana Lucia Cortez, [sp]killed off way too soon[/sp]) I just hope it isn't like Titanic... having to sit though a two-hour mushy drama-filled love story just to get to the best thirty minutes of the film (the shit SINKING!) - Douglas, a nerd and last-minute homework helper.

The visuals look pretty awesome, however I'm worried that the film has zero plot. To me it seems along the lines of: * Humans find alien world with some shit they want to mine. * Aliens don't want them to take it. * Humans kill aliens. * Some humans see that what they're doing is wrong and try to stop the other humans. * Spear chucker aliens and rebel humans show the bad humans that even with all their technological bullshit they can't even beat some savages who are protecting their homeland. Cue some bullshit analogy with the Iraq war with Americans/Taliban replacing humans/aliens and oil replacing unobtanium.

The movie looks a bit silly to me with all of the blue characters and other CGI, but it looks like one of the most promising movies that's to come out this holiday season.

I dunno if I'm going to see it. I don't think the CGI in this movie is going to work. It looks too unrealistic. In my opinion, the heavy CGI worked for Transformers and for District 9, but I don't think it will work for this one.
