• PS3 LV0 Keys Released (the ACTUALLY UNPATCHABLE KEY)
    184 replies, posted
So, remember a while back when 3.55 was cracked and deemed unfixable? Well, since they used the LV2 keys, they were indeed patchable. However, LV0 is in ROM, which means the only way to patch this is for Sony to release new hardware (think the iPhone's bootloader exploits). Currently, I have yet to find any CFW from sources I trust, but soon. Also, Kakarotoks has already confirmed he will NOT be making a CFW: https://twitter.com/KaKaRoToKS/status/260779566765858816
ERK = CA7A24EC38BDB45B98CCD7D363EA2AF0C326E65081E0630CB9AB2D215865878A RIV = F9205F46F6021697E670F13DFA726212 PUBLIC = A8FD6DB24532D094EFA08CB41C9A72287D905C6B27B42BE4AB925AAF4AFFF34D41EEB54DD128700D PRIVATE = 001AD976FCDE86F5B8FF3E63EF3A7F94E861975BA3 CURVE_TYPE = 0x33

.—-==[22-10-2012]=======================================================—-. So, about Linux on PS3...
oh boy oh boy oh boy
i don't understand any of this!
So, about Linux on PS3...
I may have a reason to dust off my PS3 again, huzzah. I never did understand why Sony felt the need to gimp features to sell more of something.
oh man yes
So they're fucked?
I wish I understood this, but if linux is involved it must be cool.
Sony then bricks all Playstation3s in response to this.
Can someone give me a rundown of what this is?
Can someone give me a rundown of what this is?
Basically, every PS3 currently in existence can have custom firmware installed to it, and there is no way for Sony to stop it.
Can someone give me a rundown of what this is?
The keys are used to verify that the software/hardware on the PS3 is genuine. They are planning on using it to create a new custom firmware for the PS3 and possibly reenable stuff like Other OS (Some PowerPC Linux distributions and other things)
i don't understand any of this!
Let me break it down for you. The Playstation runs a hypervisor type of operating system. This puts the code into different layers, with the game code on the top, followed by security layers, the OS, and than the base kernel on level 1, and then the hardware on level 0. Now, keys, that large piece of information that you saw above, is used to sign the code and tell the hardware that the software has been verified by Sony. Now, in the last security breach, we got the Level 2 key, which allows us to mess around with the Operating System, but it IS patchable, because we get Software Updates, and certain games require updates to play. The new key is the signing key for level 0, though. There is no way to patch hardware. Homebrew and hackers are on the Playstation to stay.
Can someone give me a rundown of what this is?
So everything that runs on the PS3 has a special code applied to it - called a private key. This key is hidden away from view except for Sony themselves. The public key can be used by the PS3 to verify that whatever software attempting to run was blessed by the private key. The leaked private key for lv0 is the most basic key out there. After you get this key nothing can be done to prevent anyone and everyone from creating software that is just as valid as something sony themselves created - there is no possible way to tell the difference from the PS3's point of view.
The keys are used to verify that the software/hardware on the PS3 is genuine. They are planning on using it to create a new custom firmware for the PS3 and possibly reenable stuff like Other OS (Some PowerPC Linux distributions and other things)
Is that the full extent to what it can do?
With this, can anyone install custom firmware or just people who already have custom firmware?
You wouldn't be able to go online using this without being punished though, right?
Is that the full extent to what it can do?
Full ability to make your own OS, run pirated software, and hack.
With this, can anyone install custom firmware or just people who already have custom firmware?
Anyone can produce -valid- custom firmware (CFW) for any PS3 ever, basically. So it will be insanely easy to have up-to-date CFWs installed quite soon.
With this, can anyone install custom firmware or just people who already have custom firmware?
Anyone. The PS3 literally cannot distinguish what you are asking it to run from something sony gives it directly. Ninja'd
Is that the full extent to what it can do?
There are probably more than just that, but that is the best example really.
So, remember a while back when 3.55 was cracked and deemed unfixable?
No? help
No? help
Remember geoh0t? He is the guy that published/popularized (at the ire of some groups) the lv2 key. The first link in the OP has a (technical) rundown of PS3 security breeches.
Is that the full extent to what it can do?
In short the PS3 can now run anything (anything written for it of course) and there is nothing Sony can do short of replacing the hardware.
So does this mean homebrew/hacked ps3 games?
Remember geoh0t?
Speaking of, what's he up to nowadays?
So does this mean homebrew/hacked ps3 games?
I think so.
Can this be used maliciously, as in sending people fake messages from Sony or something?
So does this mean homebrew/hacked ps3 games?
Correct, and general hacks similar to those you find on PC.
Basically, every PS3 currently in existence can have custom firmware installed to it, and there is no way for Sony to stop it.
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but does this mean we can put mods on PS3 games now?
