Caynug - I Wish I Still Knew You | My biggest release + video yet (Metal, Emotional, One man band)
7 replies, posted
Hey guys,
here I am with another single and music video, you guys always give me great vibes and feedback (been posting my music here since 2010 or something) <3
I worked on this song for a very long time, it goes down deep, emotional and means the world to me.
Everything you see and hear is me in the video. With caynug I play and record, produce, mix and master everything by my own in my own studio .
I worked for over 2 years (with breaks ofcourse) on this song and video.

Do you like it? please let me hear what you think, the effort that went into this whole single release has been enormous.

thats some fire ya got there my man
I loved the mixing, drums and vocals especially. Really enjoyed how layered the song was, lots of sound across spectrum with sounds fading in and out smoothly, no jarring transitions (even the sudden stuff feels built up to). Digging how there are 'sad slow parts" but there's still enough umph that i find myself nodding my head at parts (like the drop towards the end, damn). I like how, while you definitely scream at points it never feels like 'metal' screams. Blending singing into shouting into screaming, it feels like you're emotionally yelling, not just musically screaming if that makes any sense.
Also music like this is great, as a listener, for its ability to reach you across different emotions. I could listen to this song out anger or sadness or hype and it would feel fitting.
Only con I could think of is that subjectively it's a little boring, but that's just because that's just a side effect of the emotional genre. I have no doubt that if you want to make a pure 'hype' metal song you could, but instead ya got something unique. It's easy to add 2steps and breakdowns make a song that pumps you up, but those are gimmicks. You've made something that doesn't sound like came out of a genre-factory, you've made something that feels like the person singing is the only one who could have ever made this.
I like this a lot...I can certainty appreciate the lyrics.
Incredible work and thanks for sharing this.

You know I've always been a huge fan of your Caynug work, Darkslicer, but I think this is hands down my absolute favorite piece of yours.
It feels like you took the best elements of Uneven Structure (whom I think I've brought up when discussing every single one of your songs :v:), and managed to mix in some elements of Skyharbor and even Solstafir. I also get a really heavy Hungry Lights feeling, with the emotional delivery of the vocals.
The video is beautifully done as well. I'm generally not a big fan of effects wankery, but I feel every filter and effect you used worked beautifully in cohesion with both the rest of the video and the music.
Honestly, I'd love to give you some critiques and points for improvement, but I sincerely can't think of any. Other than maybe add lyrics as subtitles :v:.
I can't even agree with the "little boring" critique that MedicWine posits as potential criticism, and I agree with his conclusion that it feels very genuine and authentic.
Your years of hard work and effort paid off, mate. I'll do my part to share it around. I just wish I could do more to get you the exposure you deserve.
Oh hey, you're that dude who posted the dark ambient improv thing awhile back. I really like this song, certainly much better than your older stuff you have on Bandcamp great job!
Yeah this one reallllllly hits the spot, and I don't much like this style of music. Its real good, I can hear a lot of great influences in it.
