"She swept her up into her arms and got them out of the house as fast as possible," Branson told the UK's ITV News of Winslet's heroic act. Branson said he was staying in another property around 100 yards (meters) away with his wife, Joan and son Sam, 25. He said the fire broke out around 4 a.m. during a tropical storm with lightning and high winds, and Sam managed to help evacuate Winslet and other guests from the house. Tropical Storm Irene walloped the Virgin islands and headed towards Puerto Rico late Sunday and early Monday, strengthening into a hurricane Monday with winds of about 80mph (130 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Branson said the guests, including his 90-year-old mother and his daughter Holly, 29, all managed to get out safely. "Kate Winslet, her boyfriend and her family were there and Holly and some of her friends were also staying," Branson said. "My mother was there and they managed to get her out and she is fine." Winslet's spokeswoman, Sara Keene, confirmed the actress was unharmed. Branson said the house was "completely destroyed" and the fire was not entirely out Monday. "My office was based in the house and I have lost thousands of photographs which is very sad," Branson said. He said he planned to rebuild the house "as soon as we can." "We'll all stay here for the time being," he said. "There's a lot of damage and we won't be able to stick it back together again right away." Virgin said the cause of the fire was still being investigated but lightning was the likely culprit. Branson, 60, bought the island in the early 1980s and began building the Great House in 1982. He also has developed an exclusive eco-resort on the island showcasing renewable energy technology. Winslet, 35, shot to international stardom with her appearance opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron's "Titanic," and sealed her reputation with a best actress Academy Award in 2009 for "The Reader." She has two children, 10-year-old Mia and Joe, 7, from marriages to directors Jim Threapleton and Sam Mendes.[/release] Also a video: TLDR Kate Winslet is awesome and badass
Badass of the year 2011.
holy shit she just saved Richard Branson's grandmother I think he's going to give her her own planet or something now.
Wow, a celebrity did something good. Holy shit.
holy shit she just saved Richard Branson's grandmother I think he's going to give her her own planet or something now.
She saved his mother, not grandmother.
She saved his mother, not grandmother.
In other news, Richard Branson pays to have the United State's name changed to Kate Winslettia
First time I've heard of a celebrity doing something heroic like this.
First time I've heard of a celebrity doing something heroic like this.
I remember Harrison Ford rescued someone stuck on a mountain in a helicopter or something years ago...
I remember Harrison Ford rescued someone stuck on a mountain in a helicopter or something years ago...
I also heard that Harrison ford threw the terrorist out of the back of air-force one.
Does anyone else find it ironic that this took place on the Virgin Islands?
I also heard that Harrison ford threw the terrorist out of the back of air-force one.
I think he was actually part of a rescue team and piloted a helicopter, or it was just him piloting his helicopter to help people.
I remember Harrison Ford rescued someone stuck on a mountain in a helicopter or something years ago...
IIRC, he's actually a volunteer for a forest rescue organization or two. He owns that helicopter for that purpose. If you get lost in the woods on the West Coast, there's a good chance Harrison Ford will be piloting the rescue chopper. (EDIT: Ninja'd!) It's surprising to know how many badasses there really are in the Celebrity World. I applaud Kate Winslett for joining their ranks.
Fire on Necker Island sounds like a cool movie title...
Fire on Necker Island sounds like a cool movie title...
Then go make it a movie.
As for Richard Branson's house, I can't say I feel sorry for him.
What's this? A celebrity doing something completely selfless that puts their own life at risk? I want to keep living on this planet.
What's this? A celebrity doing something completely selfless that puts their own life at risk? I want to keep living on this planet.
Cheesiest and cringiest post I read in a while
As for Richard Branson's house, I can't say I feel sorry for him.
Richard Branson is a great man. Being a billionaire does not automatically make you a bad person. He's what every super rich person should be, really. I haven't heard a negative thing about the man. While he has more than enough money to rebuild it, It's still unfortunate it had to happen to a good person. http://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/243-richard-branson
As for Richard Branson's house, I can't say I feel sorry for him.
What? Why? Richard Branson is a great guy.
As for Richard Branson's house, I can't say I feel sorry for him.
He's an awesome guy. What sort of company starts a space program? An awesome one, headed by an awesome daredevil man.
He's an awesome guy. What sort of company starts a space program? An awesome one, headed by an awesome daredevil man.
Richard Branson goes both ways. http://www.virgingalactic.com/ http://www.virginoceanic.com/
She could save a 90 year old woman from a fire, but she couldn't save Leonardo DiCaprio from freezing water.
Oh that's who she is? Didn't know this actress.
+ Infinite Respect. That is honestly awesome
"I'll never let go. I promise!"
She could save a 90 year old woman from a fire, but she couldn't save Leonardo DiCaprio from freezing water.
Yeah but who gives a shit about Leo, really?
Yes, so these posts are all too common, but why did I read the title as "Kate Winslet Escapes Mansion Carrying Burning 90-year-old Woman"?
Yeah, i think they need to make that bannable.
Yeah but who gives a shit about Leo, really?
I know right. His fucking wife killed herself.
Must be remembering her training from Titanic. Running around a sinking ocean liner rescuing people is no easy task. Only this time... the greatest threat she will face is fire... and it doesn't take place on a ship.
I also heard that Harrison ford threw the terrorist out of the back of air-force one.
You might have heard it but I SAW him do that
