A NEW Google mobile phone imbedded with a chip that makes it a virtual wallet so people can 'tap and pay' is poised to make its debut, the Internet giant's chief said on Monday. The successor to the Internet firm's Nexus One smartphone runs on fresh 'Gingerbread' software and is imbedded with a near-field communication chip for financial transactions, according to Google chief executive Eric Schmidt. 'I have here an unannounced product that I carry around with me,' Mr Schmidt said while pulling a touch-screen smartphone from a jacket pocket during an on-stage chat at a Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco. 'You will be able to take these mobile devices that will be able to do commerce,' he continued. 'Essentially, bump for everything and eventually replace credit cards. In the industry it is referred to as tap-and-pay.' The near-field chips store personal data that can be transmitted to readers, say at a shop checkout stand, by tapping a handset on a pad. Mr Schmidt hid markings that might reveal which company made the mobile phone, and playfully stuck with referring to it only as an unannounced product.
Knew this kind of thing was round the corner.
I will combine the credit card and the cell phone and market it to moronic teenage girls everywhere. Now only if we could also combine it with a small poodle, we'd have the market cornered.
It'll prolly bomb just like the first one too
This was my idea, Google!
I think I saw something like this about 4-5 years ago on tech tv. It was somewhere over in europe and I never heard of it ever since.
So this means that if someone mugs you and steals your credit cards, they've got your phone too? How do you call the police then?
I will combine the credit card and the cell phone and market it to moronic teenage girls everywhere. -Magnetic credit card -Cellphone -Duct-tape Any ideas?
Pretty optimistic to say that this thing will replace credit cards...
I love how calling someone is the smallest feature on most phones today
Pretty optimistic to say that this thing will replace credit cards...
It won't replace them but I've seen these commonly in Japan
You already have contactless credit cards. Putting it in a phone is a good idea. Aslong as you still have to enter a PIN it should be relatively secure.
Whoa, wait a minute. A MOBILE wallet? Like a wallet but mobile? So you can carry it around and stuff? That´s amazing! Why hasn´t anyone thought of this before? Ok. But seriously, I don´t really see the usefullness of this. We already have credit cards. I can´t see why they would need to be embedded on mobile phones. It´s not like you´re carrying a brick, it´s a damn card.
Something similar to this already exists, but you don't need a special service. It just charges to your data plan. You can even do it with a dumbphone. You can see an older one here (that silver round thing in the middle) Just hold your phone up to it and that's that.
a virtual wallet so people can 'tap and pay
So, we could walk into a store, look at something, and say "I'd tap that"? :ohdear:
I will combine the credit card and the cell phone and market it to moronic teenage girls everywhere. Now only if we could also combine it with a small poodle, we'd have the market cornered.
just put a microchip in a dog like they do with those tracking things
I am afraid I would crush it
I saw a tutorial on how to do this with your current credit card, scotch tape, and any cell phone on Instructables.
I love how calling someone is the smallest feature on most phones today
Why wouldn't it be? All phones do that, it's nothing special, so no one cares.
Google's not getting my money :tinfoil:
But what will I do when I need parts for my starship and republic credits are no good!?!
I, for one, welcome our new Google overlords.
Can I use it to buy some Google-bread and Google-milk at the Google-mart ?
Can I use it to buy some Google-bread and Google-milk at the Google-mart ?
With google-wallet? Sure
I love the concept of this. I remember a few years ago when I carried around a flip phone, a digital camera and an mp3 player and now they're all in one device. And with today's smartphones you don't really need a laptop anymore. So if they can make it so you can replace your debit card with your phone I will jizz myself.
Hasn't Japan been doing this for years
I'm not buying if it's not leather.
wait isn't a wallet already mobile
i guess thats pretty cool wont get it 'til bugs are all work out or whatever
Hasn't Japan been doing this for years
Yeah, but they have far better cell encryption.
