Andrea Leadsom is expected to pull out of the two-way contest to become the next Conservative Party leader and UK prime minister, the BBC understands.
A source close to the energy minister said "the abuse has been too great".
Mrs Leadsom was up against Home Secretary Theresa May in the race to succeed David Cameron as prime minister.
She apologised to Mrs May on Monday after suggesting being a mother made her a better candidate for the job.
This could potentially mean either Michael Gove will be in the race again, or May is now PM in waiting.

hahahaha
She couldn't handle a week or two of criticism but thought she could be Prime Minister? Farcical.

There wasn't even any abuse.
People questioned her competency, as you'd expect, and people shamed her for suggesting May shouldn't be PM because she can't have children.
Pretty mellow really.

Well deserved criticism hurts trice as hard.
Thank god.
If she can't even handle that level of criticism she has no place being PM
Yes Theresa May!
I'm so glad that Leadsom has pulled out - I couldn't stand the thought of her becoming PM.
I think May will be a good Prime Minister (despite being a Conservative) - her speech this morning was full of interesting ideas stolen from Ed Miliband.

I'm going to let the clear issues with the snooper's charter slide and give her one chance. Hopefully she does not disappoint.
She is a strong character, is charismatic and has the experience, so hopefully she can get us through this bloody Brexit disaster.
I want off Mr Farage's Wild Ride
All of these candidates make David Cameron look like a good Prime Minister, which is saying something because he was fucking awful. If Theresa May gets in I'm seriously concerned. We need another General Election.
It was inevitable, hopefully she faces some opposition on Snooper's Charter and we don't actually see that bullshit become reality
Starting to become clear this was another political move to ensure Brexit actually happens. By reducing the time until a new leader is in they can ensure Article 50 is triggered.
The longer it goes on, the more uncertainty, and the more of an reason for not triggering the Article. Sly move.
Gove put his full support to May and won't be running. Again, to ensure it happens.
Good, hopefully this will speed things up a bit now.
Cameron needs to be looking for a removal company pretty sharpish.
No breaks on the Brexit train, would of prefered Leadsom to be quite honest.

Will never understand why. She was incredibly smarmy.
..But then of course the Brexit crowd love smarmy politicians.

Na, it was more she was the one to pull the snoopers charter shit, that's something to make even the Americans intelligence agencies jealous.

I hope it slows down and dies before it kills the country.
Just been looking at May's voting record.

It's far worse than I thought.
Thank god.

People are over blowing this really. It needs some ironing out as many MPs, including Tory MPs, have stated but you aren't going to have the thought police knocking at your door for questioning Theresa.

Hey, at least there's a bright side: your economy will be in such shambles at that point, there's no way the government can afford to run a surveillance state! Silver-lining!

Funny, for someone who so desperately worships the Anglosphere, your English is pretty bad...

Hasn't she already gotten an article pulled because it critisized her? I'm not exactly an expert on UK politics but I read something about that.

Pffft, who needs the NHS or our welfare state. We can kill those and fund the surveillance that way.
