It took some 170 firemen several hours to bring the four-alarm blaze under control. While initial reports suggested that there might have been people trapped inside the burning building, fire department confirmed there were no injuries or casualties.
Here's photos of the church interior the day it burned down https://www.facebook.com/StSavaNYC/posts/1208805242497296
Any reports yet what they suspect might be the cause?

Candles were lit, lunch was served, and then worshipers left. "We smelled smoke - once we came outside, the church was on fire," said Alex Velic.

There is no word yet on how the fire started. Thankfully, the church was empty at the time.
What a terrible thing to happen, let alone on Easter.
Damn this was the most iconic church of NYC.
As an orthodox christian, let me tell you that pretty much everybody gets at least one candle usually. Any one of them could have been the cause.
Fuck. And on the Pascha, too.
As an orthodox christian, let me tell you that pretty much everybody gets at least one candle usually.
As an orthodox christian, let me tell you that pretty much everybody gets at least one candle usually. Any one of them could have been the cause.
It happened several hours after the Easter service so I doubt that a candle from the service was the cause. The whole thing is tragic, the church was nearly 170 years old making it a historical loss. The positive thing is that no one was killed and surprisingly no one was injured from this incident. It's also refreshing to see that the blaze is not suspected to be a result of arson.
It's suspicious because Greek church in Melbourne and Macedonian one in Sydney burnt down at the same time, and all of then were caught on fire on Orthodox Easter.
It's suspicious because Greek church in Melbourne and Macedonian one in Sydney burnt down at the same time, and all of then were caught on fire on Orthodox Easter.
Some(conspiracy theorists) are already tying it together with the killing of Osama Bin Ladin, which was on this day, five years ago.

Truly something that makes sense for them to do. Or maybe just old wood-framed structures packed full of candles somehow catching fire. Who will ever truly know?
It's suspicious because Greek church in Melbourne and Macedonian one in Sydney burnt down at the same time, and all of then were caught on fire on Orthodox Easter.
Not really suspicious, it's a day where they're all packed with candles, so it makes sense multiple churches would catch fire on the same day.
If we go by that logic we would be out of churches to burn by now.
If we go by that logic we would be out of churches to burn by now.
Churches burn down quite often, but are easy to rebuild because they're made of heavy stones that don't give a shit about fire.
New York is distant, Washington is more distant, so serbs greet you by shelling
It's also refreshing to see that the blaze is not suspected to be a result of arson.
Maybe it's a master pyrotechnician at work.
This is scary, considering I walked near that church a week ago.
That's got to be one of the most intense building fires I've ever seen. Must've been incredibly hot just being around that. Wow.

I hope the church is not gone for good now, it appeared all across the media and is well known outside of the US. New York wouldn't be the same without it.

Five people suffered minor injuries, including four firefighters and one civilian who had minor injuries but refused medical treatment.

Still, for that many people in that many churches over this many years, you'd think it'd happen a bit more often, if this one were that simple.
It's pretty easy to prevent candles from getting too out of control, just about ebery candle in my church had a splash plate and metal caps that both kocked out the flame if it fell and kept it from actually touching if it didnt go out on impact. unfortunately you'd think there would have been at least someone there in such an iconic church to watch over things and stop the fire before it got so bad but this stuff can still happen [editline]3rd May 2016[/editline] It's got to be a conspiracy because jetfuel doesn't melt wood
