Why is RWBY so popular? I tried the first few episodes and it was garbage. When does it get good?

never
Why is RWBY so popular? I tried the first few episodes and it was garbage. When does it get good?
It doesn't. It's watched by people who "don't like anime" or have bad taste. Japan likes it because waifus and they hired top VA's for the dub
Why is RWBY so popular? I tried the first few episodes and it was garbage. When does it get good?
It doesn't, it's genuinely bad in every way and the one bit of appeal it had disappeared around about the time the one person who actually cared about it passed away. RoosterTeeth just has a big, already established audience to sell their stuff to so it's guaranteed to have some level of attention. Which is probably why they're okay with never actually trying.

gonna be the only one to give you an actual informative answer instead of some bandwagon crap
the entire show, from a quality standpoint has been carried entirely on monty's choreography. the choreography of the fight scenes can absolutely be great. even in volume 1 & 2, where the show literally looks straight out of a fullbright MMD sequence, the choreography can be pretty excellent enough to make the fights feel impactful and exciting to watch. volume 3 is where things start to get more visually acceptable, and the story starts to actually go somewhere. but in volume 4, the choreography took a dip.
im worried for the future of the show because at volume 3, the show was seriously starting to show potential. it could've grew into something great, but its very creator Monty passed away from an allergic reaction just as the getting was good. and because of that, a ton of steps backwards were taken in volume 4. the choreography and animations somehow managed to get worse, the only improvements being the actual aesthetic visuals since they moved from Poser to Maya
as a rwby fan i acknowledge the entire show is insanely mediocre, but i find it entertaining regardless. some of the voice acting gets seriously good (see: professor ozpin, who has some of the best voiceacting in the show). the choreography of the fights that monty had influence on are really good. the show stands out because its really the only show of its kind. a western anime in 3D, thats actively in production.
The third volume ends strongly, just the fourth volume is fucking terrible and is four episodes spread out over 12. They have no idea what they're doing with RWBY.

Weebs and the Japanese would idolize anything as long as it has tits and an oversized and unwieldy weapon.
Nah but seriously from what I've seen the action is pretty great. You don't see 3d animated action that good these days.

Sure they do, milking the fuck out of it after its creator died.
I dunno, I think Monty's closest friends know what he would like.
I could be misremembering, but I believe they said he had planned the story out before he died.
Obviously that doesn't include Chibi, I mean the main series.
I started poking holes in RWBY and ended up rewriting the entire thing in my head because a lot of it made that little sense to me.
I guess the appeal of it are the action scenes and character archetypes. Other than that, it's fucking trash. Which makes me feel awful criticizing it knowing it's Monty's baby.

I mean, yeah. The main series is fine and all. But the amount they push it for merchandising and fucking Chibi is disgusting. I can't imagine in a million years that Chibi is something that Monty would have wanted, but I guess none of us will never know.
i dont really see the problem with the merchandising... the fans want it. i've bought several figures and other stuff because im a collector and like that stuff. monty would be ecstatic to see how much his brainchild has grown

It makes money, which I guess is growing, it just feels very corporate and soulless to me. I guess I have no real ill will to it aside from Chibi which I think it pushing it way past what it ever should have been. Given I liked RWBY more from the perspective of Monty getting to work on something grandiose.
I think the Chibi stuff is weird. I remember seeing the development of the series (I was a big fan of Haloid) but I never got around to watching it until news of Season 4. I saw someone do commentary of the 1st episode and thought "Nope!" Even the Death Battle featuring a major character in the series vs. TIFA felt...unappealing. Ever saw the scene in JPIII with the T-rex vs the Spino? Pretty much how I felt about it. Can I just watch Season 3, or do I have to see the older seasons to get it when I just want the action?
RWBY always turns me away because of the way the voice acting and the animation quality generally were. Only fights got the real attention and it shows, and after Monty's passing, it didn't exactly get better given that he was the heart of the series. I don't mind the characters and art design, even if most of the characters looked like a bunch of modified stock models with an shader ontop, so I don't mind Ruby or anyone else in a crossover game where they can escape the problems of their original medium.
rwby also ripped models but no one really ever talks about that because RT will throw lawsuits at anyone who will say anything about it
Why is RWBY so popular? I tried the first few episodes and it was garbage. When does it get good?
It peaks at about a 6/10 in its third season, followed by a divebomb into its fourth season, with its trajectory looking to hit the negatives by season five

The older volumes have a lot of action, though. You could start off at Volume 3 if you really want, but 1 + 2 are where some of the best fight scenes are at, which is the biggest reason to even watch the show. There's also some stuff you're not gonna totally get in V3 if you don't watch at least Volume 2, but that's not as important.
If anything, the first two volumes are worth watching for the fight scenes, the music, as well as a few specific character performances: Professor Ozpin, Roman Torchwick, Weiss Schnee, Jaune Arc, and Pyrrha Nikos. Not necessarily because they start off far better than the other characters do, but seeing them grow into Volume 3 and beyond as characters is worth it. Believe me, I know it's hard. Volume 1 is especially cringey. Volume 1 makes it so difficult to recommend this show, even to people who like anime. It's extremely dated, everyone involved in its making was very new to what they were doing. From voiceacting, to animation, to art direction. The only good parts of Volume 1 are the fight scene choreography, and seeing certain characters grow. Watching 1 and 2 will make you appreciate 3 a million times more. If you can muster the strength to push through it, that'd be awesome. It might pay off for you. But I won't blame you if you don't.
The show isn't even very long, Volume 1 has 24 episodes, but most of them are less than 10 minutes long. Volume 2 has 12 episodes ranging from 10-15 minutes long. Volume 3 range from 15-20 minutes.
I also recommend watching the "World of Remnant" short episodes, which usually involve a well-voiced narrator like Jen Taylor, and teaching you about certain aspects of the world RWBY takes place in. They're usually pretty good and are worth watching. If you watch RWBY via the official YT playlists, they are usually already added in the proper order.

Stuff like the ear textures I can't justify. But a lot of the other stuff is unsubstantial. Like "generic anime bangs looks like these other generic anime bangs." I don't think its unreasonable that they used other 3D anime models as reference when they were first starting out.
I've always been unable to find RWBY anything less than charming. Awesome when it wants to be, stumbles plenty, but its earnest enthusiasm is undeniable, and there really isn't anything else out there like it.
V1 was slipshod in a lot of respects, but it left with an awesome visual aesthetic and character design and did a lot to foreshadow future events and firmly establish the characters and basics of the Universe in the first few episodes.
In episodes that averaged six minutes in length, it got a lot across without feeling like out and out exposition. Sometimes it was inevitable, but the series did opt for "explain it later" when it got too wordy and needed actual story to progress. Never forget the first season was literally animated by TWO fucking people.
V2 advanced the story, but remained largely farcical, with vastly improved production values. While it set the stage for it's third season though, it suffered from very few stakes and a climax that was big loud and devoid of tension.
Volume 3 though? This is the de-facto end of Act I. Everything changes by the end, characters are lost, hurt, broken and given ample motivation for the story to expand. The visuals are as good as they've ever been, and the scale and spectacle are awesome at times. And the series finally proves it's had a direction from the start, as numerous story elements hinted at in the first episode of the series come in full force.
Volume 4 is unfortunately the most stagnant, though best-looking entry. It's a very slow ride, and the choreography is missing Oum's personal touch.
However, I don't wholly blame this on the team.
A HUGE aspect of Volume 4 is that the story finally sends the cast out into the world at large, exploring realms and continents that were never featured previously. Maybe that wouldn't be so bad, except that the eponymous team members are all out on their own different paths in wildly different places. Often places that will never be seen later.
What this means is a TON of brand new assets to be modeled, textured and animated, unlike the series has ever dealt with before. Before, it all took place in Vale and Beacon Academy, with a few new locations added, or outdated models enhanced, plus a few new characters.
Volume 3's explosive finish was only possible because of THREE SEASONS worth of content being readily accessible and built upon from the start.
So while the choreography isn't bad, the one-on-ones don't have the insane speed Monty was known for. It's not bad by any means, and the cinematography has made noticeable gains, but it's clear something irreplaceable is missing...
But Volume 5 seems poised to take place in a more singular locale again, which hopefully means the scale of combat and the sheer spectacle of Volume 3 will return.
I love RWBY. I make no question of it. I'm aware of its flaws, but I'm not going to condemn it for them, because I see a worthy story and worthy characters trying its damnedest to punch through. I'm a sucker for an underdog...
...and, y'know... adorable redheads...

They didn't use them 'as reference.' They airlifted them. Exact same model. Ironically enough I've stolen them to check.
What they've done is theft. Nothing less.
Like I steal shit all the damn time. Do you think it somehow belongs less to the original owners because I gave em a new splash of paint?
No. It still belongs to them unless I damn near entirely remake it from the ground up. And even then they would still own the intellectual property.
Hopefully we're still getting P5 Arena
P5 Arena better stay with their own style plus they probably woud wait a year or so after the release.
I like 2D sprites but i can't see with P5, consdering the visuals is extremely gorgeous.

You can't see it being done in 2D sprites???
Persona 4 Arena exists, what more do you want???
I think P5 Arena might use the Xrd and DBFZ style of 3D

Unless Team Red makes it, it probably won't. Team Red is the team behind GG and DBFZ. Team Blue is behind Blazblue, Persona 4 Arena, etc etc. Team Blue is the team still using sprites, so you may as well get used to it.
