"The individuals involved in this matter have resigned their employment with University Hospital as a result on their inappropriate conduct, which violated numerous hospital policies, including our clear guidance on emergency response protocols, the use of social media and our code of conduct," hospital spokeswoman Stacie Newton said in a statement to NJ Advance Media Tuesday.
News 12 New Jersey reports James Hovan and his EMT partner decided to take a dinner break. Hovan was using the smartphone live-streaming app Periscope while driving around Newark. While waiting for their food a call came over the radio. Hovan and his partner were heard on app saying they assume the emergency call is a "taxi ride."
A second call comes in for a woman who is unconscious and struggling to breathe, the News 12 New Jersey report states. Once the food arrives, the pair takes off to the call. While driving, the EMTs can be heard mocking their patient.
"I'm struggling to eat my (expletive) mozzarella sticks," Hovan and his partner were heard saying, according to News 12 New Jersey.
"Our investigation has determined that no patients were harmed as a result of this misconduct, University Hospital is reviewing our policies to ensure our continuous commitment to patient care and safety," Newton said to NJ.com
NJ.com reports they could not reach Hovan for comment.

*eagerly awaits code3response's response*
These guys should be looking at a civil suit, frankly, at the very least. Also amazing that they put it on periscope, what the fuck did they think was gonna happen?
omg guys someone call comedy central these motherfuckers need a tv show oh lawd so funny
right.:unimpressed:
Absolutely disgusting. What is wrong with these people?
Who the fuck goes to white castle?
nah bro I dont have one. Idiots will be idiots. They knew the social media policy.
Motherfuckers, they're lucky there were no serious consequences for the patients.
Oh good, nice to know this is the kind of quality the hospital I lived next to for two years has. Glas I don't have to put my life in their hands anymore
While I will crack jokes on patients quite often I only do it behind closed doors and not live...happens more often than you think. Then again I don't work in EMS so my job isn't as high reliability as these douches' are.

As someone who does work EMS, these guys are goddamn idiots. Our sense of humor is a pretty large part of what keeps us sane sometimes, but it has its place and its place is on the way back to the station. Or even further after the fact.
I dunno, maybe they were just showboating for Periscope, but that shit shouldn't fly either and I'm at least glad that nobody got hurt as a consequence.

I worked in EMS as an EMT for almost a year and I saw this stupid shit pulled all the time. The job seems to change some people, makes them not care about anything anymore

You need that Humor, however do not go as far as they did.

Yep, patient jokes happen. They should, however, be behind closed doors and anonymous. I'll admit I make a fair few, I just make sure only colleagues hear and the patient can't be identified.
EMT here too, in a poor "ghetto" area where we get people abusing the system all the time. I can see how this attitude developed, but it doesn't negate the fact that they're irresponsible and need to be held accountable. Sometimes lunch has to wait, sometimes we don't get a lunch. They know what they signed up for when they took the job. Fucking go do the call and bring a lunch with you next time and eat it on the way there.
Finally, something hilarious about the town my University used to be in!
EMT here as well. If people heard half the things we said about patients when we were alone, we all would be fired. I can also understand the jadedness about certain calls, since about half turn out to be utter bullshit. Regardless, you respond to the call no matter what it is. White Castle after, when you tell dispatch you are doing "paperwork."
Well it's normal humor, just not something I'd stream. Article isn't clear if the call was dispatched to them specifically or just put out there.

It was dispatched to them. I don't know of any paid EMS systems that do general dispatching unless they've got a volunteer system in place for high call volume
I didn't think I'd ever actually lose respect for any EMTs, but here we are and I just lost respect for these ones.
Good job, you idiots. It astounds me how people like you managed to get that job in the first place.
Yet another EMT here. Burnout is real and making jokes keeps the job from killing you. But never ignore a call and never ever broadcast shit like that. What happens in the truck stays in the truck. I work in the shitty parts of Detroit and EMTs are regarded as one of the only civil servants that are still the good guys. We have an image to uphold and shit like this hurts everyone.
