The vandal or vandals likely struck late Tuesday or early Wednesday. A worker for the company that built the memorial says two dozen stainless steel letters were ripped off the memorial's granite face. Those letters were part of a message honoring those who died in the 2007 bridge collapse. That worker was on the scene Wednesday morning removing the rest of the letters so the damage would not be conspicuous. He tells KARE 11 it will likely take 3 weeks or more to remake the letters and repair the memorial. Minneapolis Police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer says the department wasn't notified of the vandalism until media inquiries started pouring in. He is asking visitors to not touch the granite memorial so evidence that could lead to the culprit or culprits is not destroyed. Followers of KARE 11's Facebook page expressed outrage at the act of vandalism, an emotion echoed by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak. "When the bridge collapsed and people were suffering, hundred of thousands of Minnesotans surrounded them with compassion. Now one or more individuals, through a single act of remarkable ignorance, are prolonging that suffering. That can change: I call on those responsible to immediately return the stolen letters. It's beyond description how wrong this act is, but it does not change the thousands of acts of compassion and support that this community has shown." Anyone with information on this act of vandalism is asked to call the police department's First Precinct at (612) 673-5701 and ask for the property crimes division. The message on the survivor wall was crafted by survivors and the loved ones of those who were lost. It reads, "Our lives are not only defined by what happens, but by how we act in the fact of it, not only by what life brings us, but by what we bring to life. Selfless actions and compassion create enduring community out of tragic events." The park and accompanying memorial officially opened Monday, the fourth anniversary of the bridge collapse. Using water to symbolize regeneration and stone to signify immortality and stability, the 81-foot by 10-foot garden offers a lot to the survivors and victims' families. "The families wrote a personal message on each one of the columns, the light columns, so people could get to know who they were. They weren't just a name, they were a person," project designer Tom Oslund said. There are 13 steel beams in memory of those who lost their lives. The names of the 171 survivors are etched in stone behind the beams. (Copyright 2011 by KARE. All Rights Reserved.)
:sigh:
What the fuck? Who the christ would do that?
Morons.
GOD FUCKING DAMNIT MINNESOTA. Can't we have one nice thing?
Fucking disgusting.
Scum of the Earth.
And sadly, it's business as usual once more.
Once again, probably some stupid teen making an ass of himself.
ah man, those guys sure showed the MAN, defacing a memorial of people who needlessly died.
News is depressing.
I'd like to know why the vandal(s) did it.
I'd like to know why the vandal(s) did it.
Because they're just awful people?
Stainless steel? Metal theives.
Well, I spose if you need a crowbar, thats pretty secure in itself.
Well, I spose if you need a crowbar, thats pretty secure in itself.
The fact that they were removed says otherwise
I'd like to know why the vandal(s) did it.
to stick it too THE MAN, man.
Stuff like this isn't rare. In this historic graveyard in Glasgow, most of these huge grand gravestones and memorials have been knocked over or chipped at. [editline]3rd August 2011[/editline] but then glasgow is a shithole full of scummy cunts
The fact that they were removed says otherwise
I could remove your front door with relative ease, do you feel like it's not secure enough just because a person can remove it?
I'd like to know why the vandal(s) did it.
Obviously a cry for help from a very troubled man, he needs our sympathy and support
It's people that do things like that. They deface the good people's reputation.
Because they're just awful people?
Are you deluded? Criminals aren't inherently evil. They have reasoning and logic too, as well as feelings and thoughts. Despite what many people see in movies and videogames.
I think I need to call the Sister Cities international corporation so we can get Minneapolis and Glasgow linked.
Wow thanks, I'm guessing you're not saying that because Glasgow is a center of art and culture.
What fucking horrible people. Vandalizing things is bad enough, but vandalizing memorials is just fucking disgusting.
Because they're just awful people?
Or because they are 14 year olds pumped on hormones
I hope the person who did this sees the news and realizes what a dick they are for vandalizing a memorial.
I just heard on the news that a 9-year-old kid was arrested for hurling rocks at passing cars on an interstate. People are fucking stupid and have zero respect for others' property. :sigh:
.
Who ever did it deserves to be shot multiple times.
