Voters will choose between former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and ex-World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani. It should be the first time that power in Afghanistan has been democratically transferred. But the Taliban has threatened to target polling stations and there are concerns that voting fraud could produce a disputed result.
If you were wondering why abdullah has a name like abdullah abdullah:
Until he became a government minister, Abdullah had only a first name; demands from Western newspaper editors for a family name led him to adopt the full name Abdullah Abdullah.
Well, the polls are closed. It looks like the Taliban have once again failed to seriously disrupt the election, and they didn't even manage to scare people away from voting as turnout is estimated to be as high as the first round. Preliminary results are due on 2 July. Whoever wins, we should hope that it's not a really close result, because then the losing candidate could plausibly contest the result and a lot of people will feel the election was stolen.
