[release]Officers said they spotted the plants inside a garage in 5900 block of Broadway near Highway 24 in the Rockridge neighborhood. According to a note left, a driver said he swerved to avoid a cat in the road and sideswiped a car and hit a garage door.
The woman who owns the struck car said the driver later returned to the scene where he was led away in handcuffs.
But that was just the beginning of the story. The hole in the garage door revealed a secret garden.
It was a secret that the officers responding to the hit-and-run call were not necessarily expecting. Neighbors said the garage's illegal contents were plainly visible from the street. Police discovered 102 plants in the damaged garage and another 128 in an adjacent garage.
"It's a little weird to think my daughter goes to school down the street it's a little unnerving," said neighbor Elizabeth Falkner.
Authorities also found lighting and ventilation systems. Neighbors said they wouldn't have guessed what was growing behind closed doors.
"There's been a number of people moving in and out so I don't even know who lives here," said area resident Ken Quigley.
"He does weeding and gardening. Nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing that would show signs that he has 250 pot plants. Nothing at all like that," commented neighbor Kyle Kekelis.
A spokesman for the Oakland Police Department estimated street value of the plants topped $100,000. While it was not a large operation, it was one that could net the grower up to four years in state prison.
The discovery also speaks to the ease with which people can start small pot growing operations undetected. And if it weren't for an out-of-control driver, it might have remained that way for some time.
Even the woman who lives above the garage said she was clueless as to what was literally under her nose. She said she doesn't have access to either of the garages. [/release]
