• Shepard Fairey modifies 'Hope' poster for Occupy movement
Shepard Fairey is perhaps one of the most politically engaged street artists working today. In recent weeks, he has lent his support to the various Occupy protests around the country, even creating a poster for the Occupy Wall Street movement. Now Fairey has fashioned his biggest contribution yet to the grassroots effort -- a modified version of his famous "Hope" poster that calls for President Obama to support the movement. Fairey unveiled the new poster on his website late last week. The image, shown above, substitutes Obama's face*with a figure wearing the Guy Fawkes protest mask that has become a sartorial symbol of the Occupy rallies. "This image represents my support for the Occupy movement, a grassroots movement spawned to stand up against corruption, imbalance of power, and failure of our democracy to represent and help average Americans," the artist wrote on his site. "On the other hand, as flawed as the system is, I see Obama as a potential ally of the Occupy movement if the energy of the movement is perceived as constructive, not destructive." The text at the bottom of the poster reads: "Mister President, we HOPE you're on our side." The Guy Fawkes masks have become a common sight among protesters of the Occupy rallies. They are a reference to the famous English historical figure who tried to blow up the House of Lords in the early 17th century. The version of the mask seen in the Occupy movement comes from the popular book "V for Vendetta" and its 2006 film adaptation. Fairey's original "Hope" poster debuted during Obama's 2008 presidential run and featured an idealized image of the then-senator. The poster was the subject of a legal battle with the Associated Press, which contended that Fairey illegally used one of its photographs as an inspiration for the artwork.* Perhaps anticipating similar legal issues with the revised "Hope" poster, Fairey wrote on his site: "I'm still trying to work out copyright issues I may face with this image, but feel free to share it and stay tuned..."
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2011/11/shepard-fairey-creates-new-poster-for-occupy-movement.html
It's nice, but - pardon my rudeness - is this news?
Am I the only one that's sick and tired of that picture and all of it's variations? Might I point out the original subject of the picture hasn't really done any of the things we were encouraged to HOPE for.
The guy fawkes mask is hardly a representation of the movement.
Incoming Republican response, "We told you Obama was working with those far leftist radicals! We told you!"

Because Obama really hasn't changed anything or brought any hope Fairey's asking if Obama is still on our side.
It's quite scary, honestly. To think the artist created the original poster for Obama. Now he's taking it back. Also freaky that, that Guy Fawkes mask acts as the symbol for tyranny in what old movies and novels depict as the gas mask hoodie
I was expecting Commander Shepard as a fairy, with the words "We've had enough of your disingenuous assertions." You know what, that would make a much better poster than this one.
I'm tired of seeing Anonymous and Guy Fawkes associated with the Occupy movement.
That's the whole point of the redesign. Because Obama really hasn't changed anything or brought any hope Fairey's asking if Obama is still on our side.
Ah, I kind of glossed over it and assumed it was another idiot's photoshop, not the original artist. Still sick of seeing it, but the artist basically taking back the original work says something.
I hate how Fawkes has become the icon of freedom, it's like Che was back in the 90's.
I hate how Fawkes has become the icon of freedom, it's like Che was back in the 90's.
I don't know whey they choose it, Guy Fawkes didn't exactly succeed in what he aimed to do.
I don't know whey they choose it, Guy Fawkes didn't exactly succeed in what he aimed to do.
Because he was in a cool movie and stuff!!! I bet a lot of people don't even know who Guy Fawkes was. Though I bet the same thing could've been said about Chi.
at least guy fawkes actually stood for something good
at least guy fawkes actually stood for something good
Blowing up Parliment to install a Catholic Theocracy? Sounds good.
he was actually trying to stop persecution of english catholics by the protestant monarchy
he was actually trying to stop persecution of english catholics by the protestant monarchy
By blowing up what eventually would lead to Britians practical abandonment of Monarchy. Plus I doubt the Catholics would have been much better on the tolerance front.
you'd think they wouldn't have a choice, with a catholic queen
The guy fawkes mask is hardly a representation of the movement.
yeah it shows how little the author knows [editline]22nd November 2011[/editline]
By blowing up what eventually would lead to Britians practical abandonment of Monarchy.
you'd think they wouldn't have a choice, with a catholic queen
Well, from what I have learned about early European Monarchies, Queens didnt make much of a difference to a King's decision. Well unless its her lack of his child.
This is important variation because it was made by the guy who made the original
Well, from what I have learned about early European Monarchies, Queens didnt make much of a difference to a King's decision. Well unless its her lack of his child.
there would be no king in the equation if the gunpowder plot had succeeded, princess elizabeth would have been installed as head of state
Well, from what I have learned about early European Monarchies, Queens didnt make much of a difference to a King's decision. Well unless its her lack of his child.
Lack of husband in the old days, if she married he became king, and Guy Fawkes intended on installing the King's either niece or daughter as the ruling monarch after blowing up the entirety of parliament. I'm fairly sure most of anonymous just knows it from V for Vendetta, designed to be an homage to Guy Fawkes but instead of a religiously oppressive monarchy, a Nazi-esque dictatorship, hence why they can relate to it more, and hence the mask, as it is the exact way it appeared in the movie. So no, I don't think they know, or likely care, who Guy Fawkes was, I think they more relate it to the movie and supposed message behind V for Vendetta.
Get fucked Fairey

Now I know why the British burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes every year.

Also Shepard Fairey is a great designer.
