Combat uniforms featuring the service’s newest camo pattern will be available for sale starting in the summer of 2015, the Army announced Thursday.
The Army is calling its new camo the Operational Camouflage Pattern, though it’s been referred to in previous tests as Scorpion W2. It is similar in appearance to Crye Precision’s MultiCam, but was developed by Army Natick Labs in Massachusetts.
Scorpion W2 uses a color palette of muted greens, light beige and dark brown.
The Army plans to transition to this new camo over time, phasing out the unpopular gray-green Universal Combat Pattern of the ACU. The Army, in a statement, said a phase-out of the older uniform was “fiscally responsible.”
I'm digging it.
too bad they didn't do this in 2004 when they had this exact pattern and chose ucp digital instead
[editline]2nd August 2014[/editline]
and too bad they didn't do this when they payed crye precision millions for multicam gear and uniforms
Could somebody please explain in simple terms what the advantages and disadvantages of this are over the old pattern?
Thanks in advance.

iirc the Army didn't cut a deal with that corporation due to pricing. I think they were looking for something cheaper but deliver the same quality.

crye was determined to get the army's contract and they were able to get the costs of production down to the exact same as UCP but the army went with scorpion anyways
crye was practically offering them multicam
[editline]2nd August 2014[/editline]
instead they're going to have to get all their production lines on scorpion instead of using the existing shit for multicam

ACU pattern has been widely criticized through the Army because of how 'bright' it looks. From my little experience, I can notice the bright colors of the digi-green sticking out from over 100 meters away in an afternoon in arid brush.
Multi-cam or this current pattern, it doesn't use bright colors and it from the way things look, it's able to blend in more with more terrain as compared to ACU because it uses colors that are less bright and it contrasts evenly especially in the middle of a sunny day.
every army in the world is going to wear basically the same gear at this rate.
15% of countries already issue multicam or some variant of multicam.

ww3 will be guys in multicam with ars fighting guys in multicam with aks lol

my brother said, "The only thing ACU blends in with is gravel."
trouble is now a lot of people like him have to switch out and buy all new gear once it rolls out which costs a ton. better than being stuck with acu though i suppose

well its not as bad as ukraine where there's guys in multicam with AK's fighting other guys with multicam and AKs
UCP can be kept in storage in case the USA needs to invade the moon for some reason
well its not as bad as ukraine where there's guys in multicam with AK's fighting other guys with multicam and AKs
or Georgia where they have guys issued with multicam and using AK's and AR's at the same time.
Fun fact, the picture in the OP is what our troops are already wearing when deployed, at least cav scouts do, they're not allowed to wear it when stationed state-side though.

The old pattern plain sucks because it tries to blend in with everything and kinda fails.
This pattern blends in well with mountainous/woodland landscapes, like what you find in Afghanistan and Colorado. It also supposedly works better then the old woodland BDU pattern because the pattern size and coloration is actually a closer match to real-world terrain.

no pictured in the OP is the actual new uniform design in the new pattern
you're confusing it for the multicam/OCP FRACUs which have been standard issue to all army, navy and airfoce deploying to OEF since around 2010
[editline]2nd August 2014[/editline]
also cav scouts r homo

old pattern sucks because some pog officers decided to come up with their own ARMYSTRONG pattern at the tail end of a 2-3 year camouflage evaluation effort which scorpion (which became multicam) was created for...over 10 years ago
ucp was never made with any scientific or logical thought or testing
instead they've wasted billions on UCP and millions on multicam... to go back to what they had been testing in 2002
[editline]2nd August 2014[/editline]
its great and all that the armys leadership peaked their heads out of their assholes but this is something that should have happened a decade ago
idk about anyone else but i don't like what it says about my country when its army can't even come up with a uniform
Well minus the uniform, the army seems pretty effective. I'm not sure what there's to complain about it in that regard.
reminds me of

we can't tell if it looks good unless rusty states his oppinion

Oh shit, my bad, neat.
And yeah, cav scouts are lame, my friend is infantry and got assigned to a cav scout unit on his first deployment.
And to think the Marines spent a little over 100k to develop MARPAT
aw man I liked ACU it looked cool
I wonder if there is a tactical pocket designer somewhere.....
Is this going to be universally adopted because all four branches having their own special snowflake camo is retarded. Or as this guy puts it: "The Joint Staff's top enlisted adviser, Marine Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia, said the mix of uniforms makes the U.S. military look like a Baskin-Robbins and signaled his support for a common uniform."

Why is really that bad that the branches have different uniforms? It helps distinguish them from the other branches, and so long as they're effective, does it really matter that much?
...and so long as they're effective, does it really matter that much?
Money and logistics. It's cheaper to make just one uniform and send it to whomever needs it, than it is to make and send a special uniform to each branch
This looks a lot like British MTP.

ACU is a terrible camouflage pattern. From what I've seen floating around the internet on Afghanistan it makes them stick out like sore thumbs anywhere but mountainous/gravelly/rocky areas.
Not that it's enormously important, but Multicam/this is a lot more aesthetically pleasing than ACU imo, maybe because it actually looks like muted vegetation tones
ACU is ugly and borderline worthless

True, but from what I've heard, there isn't a huge price difference between the US uniforms. They're all in the $70 tag as far as I know. Feel free to correct me, as I'm not 100% sure.

It's not the cost of a single uniform I speak of, it's the cost to produce them. Bulk buying is usually cheaper.
