I was thinking that after hearing about their escape. They're not really free if they're on the run from the law and have to always keep an eye open.
The prison itself is "near the Canadian border", of course he was going to be found by it.

Sitting in a jail cell for the rest of your life or seeing the outside world for twenty more days.
I'd take the latter. The current jail system in our country is atrocious, and some people think that keeping people alive to actually suffer is a better alternative to getting shot and killed outright.
He was caught because he shot at a car. The guy didn't even know it, he heard shots and found bulletholes later on.
Seems like a stupid move for what has been a very smart and elaborate escape plan.
