• Intel Core i7-4930K vs Xeon E5-2630 v2

Long story short, I am constructing a computer for use of heavy CAD and physical simulations (non-visually intensive) exclusively. Which would offer superior performance for this purpose: the Intel Core i7-4930K or the Xeon E5-2630 v2. CPU world offers a good place to see a comparison of their specifications, however for it's intended use, which would offer better performance. This is also with the disclaimer that selecting the i7 will allow the upgrade the 32GB of RAM from 1600MHz to 1866 MHz, with the same CAS latency.
It might be worth noting that you can get ECC memory with the xeons. If you end up doing stuff where you need to let the machine run full tilt for several days at a time, it's worth it. It's up there for the worst feelings in the world to have something like that fail 20 minutes before its done in a way that is not recoverable after 3+ days.
4930k will suffice. Best bang for buck with what you want to do, unless you want to fork out double for something 30% more powerful. Also don't get the 5930k, look at this shit.
What's the source of that benchmark?
Passmark.
The website was www.Cpubenchmark.net - its a good source as its benchmarks from actual pc's but even so, the results aren't very reliable due to the tests / programs in the backgrounds on the pc and differing pc specs etc.. For example, on the GPU section of the website, the GTX 670 is above the GTX 690 which makes no sense. But back ontopic, i'd have to go with the I7 over the Xeon as it's not worth all the extra money (in my opinion)
What exact software are you using? Eg, what CAD, CFD/FEA software?
