Signs in Kiryas Joel indicate that the sidewalks are segregated by gender-specific colors.
KIRYAS JOEL - Signs apparently separating genders by sides of the street in the Hassidic community of Kiryas Joel are causing some controversy.
The signs along Forest Road indicate that the sidewalks are segregated by gender-specific colors. While some outside of the Satmar community say they find them offensive, followers quickly took to social media in defense of the signs, saying they are "suggestions" during busy times when thousands are on the streets.
[...]
A spokesperson for Orange County called the signs outrageous, but it is unclear whether or not they will be removed. A representative for the New York Civil Liberties Union said they will continue to monitor Kiryas Joel to make sure it is not unlawfully endorsing or enforcing gender segregation in public.
Calls to Kiryas Joel's attorney for comment were not returned.
Oh, I should say for those who don't know about the village: "Kiryas Joel is a village within the town of Monroe in Orange County, New York, United States. The great majority of its residents are Hasidic Jews who strictly observe the Torah and its commandments, and belong to the worldwide Satmar Hasidic dynasty." (Stolen from Wikipedia) And they are notorious for not giving a single shit about what the Town of Monroe (which they are part of) or Orange County says they can and can not do.
But what about the transgender people?
But what about the transgender people?
One foot on one side, one foot on the other.
But what about the transgender people?
To be honest, they'd probably be kicked out of the community at the very least.
What would happen to them would probably even be worse.
But what about the transgender people?
i assume they'd walk on the side of the street corresponding to their gender
transgender=/=bigender
what the fuck
ew
But what about the transgender people?
Cut em in half :quagmire:
didn't we already fix segregation among the blacks and the whites quite a long time ago? Why does it now have to be gender oriented.
followers quickly took to social media in defense of the signs, saying they are "suggestions" during busy times when thousands are on the streets.
And the lot of them would be idiots. If you separated by gender and assumed there were the same number of females and males on different sidewalks of the same width and no obstructions, it's not going to speed anything up because of bidirectional traffic.
The more realistic scenario is that there are more of one gender than the other and one set of sidewalks is going to quickly be saturated while the other will be much less so.
A representative for the New York Civil Liberties Union said they will continue to monitor Kiryas Joel to make sure it is not unlawfully endorsing or enforcing gender segregation in public.
I think it's best to nip this in the bud right now and rip the signs down. The signs are already illegal for being there, you're not allowed to put signs of any sort on power poles without getting an easement from the city/power company, and you're very unlikely to get one. And it promotes discrimination so it's a double whammy.
I'm all for open religion, but it crosses the line if some religious group thinks it's alright to start imposing their views on other groups or the public at large. If they don't nip this now, it just sets a precedent for other groups to do similar things and we end up with a shitstorm.

Because some religions are backwards and treat women like second class citizens. I'm sure you can figure out which pretty quick.
Actually, this is actually a great idea but needs to be done entirely differently, segregating walking spaces by sex is stupid. I think there should be some sort of system that divides people into roughly three groups based on walking speed, or encumbrance. I'm 6'2" and when I'm in a hurry I can power-stride about as fast as really short people can jog, it's just a virtue of being tall and long-legged. It's really awkward and uncomfortable to have to slow down or sometimes outright stop for slow people who are unaware of me behind them. I can only imagine how daunting it must be to be like 4'9" and see this fucking giant walking toward you while looking at the trees or some shit and not paying attention. (it happens)
I think if we tidied up our sidewalk use, we could probably cut down on a lot of things that bother just about everyone. Hell we might even cut down on really silly injuries that I'm sure happen a lot but nobody pays attention to it.

This is especially true in this village. Women in KJ aren't allowed to drive, and the village got mad at our school district's bus garage because we told them we could not guarantee them a male driver if they want us to transport their children.
I don't think this is a big deal, especially when it's just one little village that is almost completely homogeneous. Yes, it's backasswards and stupid and superstitious and I pity anybody that subjects themselves to living in that community, but it's not really trampling on anyone's civil rights. Living in a super-religious town means you give a certain amount of tacit consent to the community enforcing it's norms. Besides, signs can be ignored. I ignore a hundred idiotic, ignorant anti-abortion signs every time I drive across southern Indiana.

It sets a horrible precedent however. Just because you can't segregate doesn't mean you should be able to suggest segregation. Imagine if racist business owners suggested blacks leave but didn't outright tell them to leave. Its not segregation because its only a suggestion but its still hostile.
Its way different from anti abortion signs.

I propose forcibly removing all women and children from that community and leave all of the men behind. Then erect a 15' high wall around the entire community and tell them they're free to continue their community for however many generations it lasts (ie. none.)
Then take all of the confiscated women and children and give them re-education to show them they're not required to be treated like shit just because they have a vagina and breasts.

If a racist business owner operated like that, he wouldn't be in business very long anyway.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this problem. :v:
I walk very fast period, mainly because I take large strides I guess. I don't know why it's just what I'm used to. Us tall people have it rough in this short-people world.

Entirely depends on the location. There are still large pockets of racism in the US and racist business owners that get along just fine because their clientele is other racists.
I know of a few such places out on Devils Backbone, and even a few in New Braunfels.

"These women are brainwashed! We need to take them from their homes and tell them what to think!"
I mean, I don't like this either, but at least be a little self-aware :v:
What makes this especially frustrating for the surrounding towns is that they finally agreed to end gender segregation in their public playground back in April (though it was, of course, still segregated. All they did was take the signs down).
Snip
Godwin's law strikes again!
If you are serious, holy shit that's sociopathic.
Because emancipating victims that have their rights stripped away at the hands of oppressive people using religion as an excuse for their actions isn't OK.
Wait, not really.
I don't know why you're referring to godwin's law, I made no references to Nazis or Hitler.

Then they can segregate themselves from civil society. Not as if it'll hinder anyone they hate, they could just go somewhere else to purchase goods.
This kind of shit can't be allowed to fly. Your right to culture doesn't let you try to impose that culture on others, no matter how minor the facet is, how much of a mere "suggestion" you claim it to be, or how homogeneous you assume the population is.
On one hand, it is their religious freedom to practice what they want. Conservative Arabs have women wear Abayah and they cannot show skin in public. It's a widely practiced and acknowledged tradition. On the other, yes, it is pressing pretty close to segregation, something which is outlawed across the US. Since they say it is a "suggestion", and not enforced by some religious law, it is technically allowed.
In the end, it won't really make an impact on those who don't follow the religion. Anyone who does follow the religion does and it's not as if we'll forcibly make them not follow it.
Kinda odd knowing this is happening in my county and a neighboring town.

Funfact: I was in the dentist once and some of the Hasidics from Kiryas Joel were pointing at me and speaking in Hebrew.

What town? I'm in Woodbury.

They do segregate themselves from society, which is why they live out in the hill country where it's sparsely populated. Though in the case of New Braunfels, you have the old German immigrant population that makes up a large chunk of the city which are extremely racist.
My old man told me a story about how he went to do a service call on a security system at some restaurant/bar in New Braunfels. He was there with one of his Hispanic buddies and they were both talking in Spanish, which the old woman behind the counter overheard. Eventually his Hispanic friend left (can't remember his name off hand) and he asked the old woman cashier/manager if he could go in the back and do the work on the alarm system (which he was expressly called there for in the first place) she said "not unless the owner was here."
Well he was kind of puzzled and was told to wait for the owner to show up so out of boredom he started talking to her. Eventually after talking for awhile he figured out why she wouldn't let him in the back. Apparently to her, speaking Spanish meant you're "a Mexican" and she didn't want "any dirty Mexicans" in the back area.
