The Man Who Went Under the Most Extensive Face Transplant Ever Has an Amazing New Face
Do you remember Richard Lee Norris? He was the guy who suffered a horrific gun accident in 1997 that ripped off his nose, chin, lips and teeth and turned him into a recluse. This past year he went under the most extensive face transplant ever and now after much recovery, his face is brand new.
Remember, this was the face transplant that would make even sci-fi movies shudder—Norris received donor skin from his scalp to his neck, along with new teeth, tongue, muscle, tissue and a jaw. It was intense. After the surgery in March, we saw a picture of the results side-by-side with his previous face. It still looked swollen. Today? He looks totally normal. Norris says:
"For the past 15 years I lived as a recluse hiding behind a surgical mask and doing most of my shopping at night when less people were around. I am now able to walk past people and no one even gives me a second look. My friends have moved on with their lives, starting families and careers. I can now start working on the new life given back to me.
Norris has spent a lot of his time since the surgery fishing and golfing and has regained his speech and can even smile and show expressions. It is truly amazing how far he has come.
This is pretty cool stuff. Its great that he's now on the road to be able to live a normal life.
Yeah (medical) SCIENCE!
thats
fucking amazing this guy
Holy shit that looks amazing, looks way better then the previous too. Medical science rocks.
He probably has nowhere near full function, but that's probably the most normal looking transplant job i've ever seen. I'm sure his life is looking much better now.
While this is great for him, I wouldn't exactly say he looks completely normal.
There's just something off.

looks like don corleone

The proportions are slightly maladjusted and he probably doesn't have full muscle control, so his expression is probably usually in an odd state like that.
Honestly compared to what it has been it's not a huge deal, nature has put out worst looking.
You'd think if they were going to do full reconstructive surgery they could have given him proper occlusion rather than leaving him with such a massive underbite

Humans are VERY tuned into what the "correct" proportions for a face and the "Correct" way to make facial expressions. A few things on his face aren't QUITE right, and he has a massive underbite so your brain automatically thinks "this isn't normal".
Still better than looking like E.T., though.

Do you think he gives a shit after having looked like the first picture?
I feel really happy for the guy. He just wanted to blend in for once, and after 15 years he finally can
Its like something out of Ghost in the Shell where there are face artists.
Heck, kudos to him though. Must have been damn sucky not being able to eat
It looks a bit :downs: for me, but it's amazing considering all the face damage the surgeons needed to cover, he should beabe to blend in alright.

I think it's his mouth, everything else is fine and looks good but his mouth.
Started off my morning with a smile for this guy.
Exponential change bros
That's amazing. Everyone here is pointing out that something looks off, but that's because you're all scrutinizing it closely. If I passed this guy in public, I wouldn't suspect a thing.
If I saw him on the street, I'd probably just think he's been paralyzed from a stroke or something
The middle picture looks a bit like Tom Cruise after a serious allergic reaction. He looks alright now, though, which is more than you can say for most people who'd have to go through what he went through.
Not even he's mother could love that face..
I feel terrible for laughing at his old face
seriously though it looks like a gmod pose

You'd only noticed close up but nobody would think of what he went through maybe thought of some bad accident that required some repairs

It's terrible, but this was one of the first things I thought of:

Still, serious respect for that guy. It must be great to finally feel like a normal person again.
I hope we will perfect cosmetic surgery and prosthetics. No one should live with such a disfigured face. If normal looking people already worry about their face how terrible must those people feel.
Kinda reminds me of facepunch photoshop threads...
It's good for both him and science (not the facepunch threads.)
Face surgeons should study human facial proportions from an art point of view so they can make more natural and prettier faces :v:
Maybe something doesn't look right but at least you can look at that face for more than two seconds.
End result reminds me of Gemini Rue.

I've seen far uglier and stranger looking people who have nothing wrong with them, it's a damn good job.
Medical science sure has come a long way.
