Tyneside-based bakery firm Greggs is being awarded the honorary freedom of the city of Newcastle. The company, which was founded in Newcastle in the 1930s, is being recognised for its contribution to the region's economy and its charity work. A ceremony at Newcastle Civic Centre will see the firm join the likes of Newcastle United and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Greggs, famed for its sausage rolls, serves five million customers a week. In 1987 the company started supporting local communities after Ian Gregg established the Greggs Trust, now the Greggs Foundation, and this has gone on to give more than £10m to good causes across the country. More than £3m has been raised for children's cancer research through the company's sponsorship of the North East Children's Cancer Run. 'North East values' Former chief executive Sir Michael Darrington also introduced Greggs Breakfast Clubs, which provide breakfasts for 6,000 primary school children. The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Mike Cookson, said: "Greggs continues to be a fantastic asset for the whole region and their generosity has helped so many good causes here and around the country. "I would like to congratulate everyone at the company on receiving this award, which not only reflects the important contribution they have made to charity but also celebrates their commercial success." Kennedy McMeikan, Greggs current chief executive, said: "We are all proud to be part of a business that has never lost its North East values of caring about people, taking pride in our products, working hard and always trying to enjoy what we do." The freedom of Newcastle has also been awarded to the late Sir Bobby Robson, Alan Shearer and Nelson Mandela. Greggs is awful. More like Dreggs. Ham & Cheese Bake = Baby Sick Pasty
So a football club, the Royal Shakespeare Company and a bakers? Sounds like a joke, "What do they have in common?".
And yet life rolls along.
Mm, I fucking love fuckin Greggs pasties, innit butt.
They got their just desserts.
Must be better than subway, subway is awful food.
I like the Chicken & Bacon Ranch subs you can get from Subway. I don't dare try anything else, it would be a bloody expensive mistake.
Greggs is a company of many thin layers with a warm filli... i mean heart. [editline]09:15PM[/editline] I mean they still serve fat people.
Greggs is awesome but those adverts with the dude who was Paddy in Phoenix Nights were shit.
I bet that makes their competition feel like a hot crossed bun.
For us americanfags can any of you britfags tell us what exactly this Greggs pastry shop is? My guess is that it's the Hershey chocolates of Pastries.
For us americanfags can any of you britfags tell us what exactly this Greggs pastry shop is? My guess is that it's the Hershey chocolates of Pastries.
pretty much subway but higher quality. oh, and fat people go often.
There's a greggs in my town. It used to be called Bakers Oven, but greggs rebranded it.
pretty much subway but higher quality. oh, and fat people go often.
So if it's a chain of deli's then why are they honoring them, or is this article just fucking retarded?
For us americanfags can any of you britfags tell us what exactly this Greggs pastry shop is? [editline]10:24PM[/editline]
So if it's a chain of deli's then why are they honoring them, or is this article just fucking retarded?
Because Greggs is awesome.
By my understanding Hershey chocolate is disgusting compared to our refined European confection.
Hershey chocolate tastes like shit compared to most other American chocolates, too. They're just cheap and not as shitty as most cheap chocolate.
FUCK YEAH, up north is the only place you can get Stottie bread, which is fucking delicous.
Greggs is awful. More like Dreggs. Ham & Cheese Bake = Baby Sick Pasty
Strange, I really like Greg's. Doesn't beat the in-store baked stuff from Sainsburys though. They're really good!
I see people saying Greggs is like Subway, or the Hersheys Chocolate of Bakeries. This is not right! Greggs is a bakery chain, started in Newcastle, which sells very cheap baked goods. They're incredibly popular among poor people, especially their sausage rolls. Most people don't know that the sausage in this contains as little as 37% pork, and 63% who the fuck knows what. Their pasties and 'steak bakes' are popular as they are so cheap - about 85p a pop - but are filled with very cheap, nasty, factory farmed meat with absolutely no flavour. Some of them, like the cheese and ham or the chicken one, just look like they're filled with baby sick. ...Their fresh cream donuts however, are delicious.
