Two elephants have been saved from the deadly Siberian cold by drinking vodka, Russian officials say.
They say the animals had to be taken out into the bitter cold after the wooden trailer they were travelling in caught fire in the Novosibirsk region.
The elephants, aged 45 and 48, suffered frostbite to the tips of their ears amid temperatures of -40C (-40F)
But they were warmed up by two cases of vodka mixed with warm water, one official was quoted as saying.
"They started roaring like if they were in the jungle! Perhaps, they were happy," the official told Russia's Ria Novosti news agency.
The animals continued their recovery in a heated garage of a local college where they were brought by a truck under police escort.
The elephants belong to a Polish circus, which has been touring the region, reports say.
Like with humans, alcohol can make animals feel warmer but it actually lowers their core body temperature, scientists say.
But Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper quoted Novosibirsk zoo director Rostislav Shilo as saying that the elephants were not harmed or intoxicated by the vodka, and that without it they would have died of hypothermia or pneumonia.
Vodka is Russia's duct tape.
Need an elephant warmed up, a tank engine started, or just a nice drink after a hard day in the factory? Vodka!

Don't forget molotovs.

For when you really need an elephant warmed up.
Don't forget molotovs.
technically the finns put those into widespread* use
against the russians
So yeah...
*[sp]Uses date back to spanish civil war and earlier sporadic[/sp]

two cases? damn, elephants go hard.
How did it prevent hypothermia if it lowered their core temperature? Can smart man explain to feeble person please?
How did it prevent hypothermia if it lowered their core temperature? Can smart man explain to feeble person please?
It didn't. Alcohol makes you feel warmer without actually raising your temperature (because the alcohol makes your blood veins expand a bit, thus they get closer to the skin, thus you feel the warm blood)
I believe the elephants themselves were never in any real danger, or the warm water that was mixed with the vodka is what actually raised their temperature.

Vodka would make a shitty molotov. Real molotov is gasoline + normal soup.

They mixed it with warm water.

Maybe the sensation of extra warmth had some involvement.
Oh Russia, when will your miracle drink ever fail? We should use it for rocket fuel or something. Travel to Mars in days!
They mixed it with warm water.
I figured but the director said the vodka specifically prevented hypothermia and without it they'd die. Probably just vague wording then.

I like how there's basically no way to read this quote in anything other than a thick eastern European accent.

I doubt the elephants were in any real danger. If the humans were fine out there with just clothes on, then Elephants with hundreds of pounds of insulating fat would be fine.
And I thought it was cold here at -25c a week ago or so.
They mixed it with warm water.
frig off ricky.

bringing up the elephant in the room I see

am I missing something or is this really convenient.

They don't converge; They intersect, don't they?
They don't converge; They intersect, don't they?
Converge, intersect, meet, sodomise each other; I don't know anymore. It's all a blur.
The title could have just been "Russians save elephants from cold" and we would have just assumed Vodka was involved.
Water for elephants.
Vodka would make a shitty molotov. Real molotov is gasoline + normal soup.
mix some flour or blood into it and it'll thicken up and stick to whatever it hits. would work just as well as gasoline

Those elephants must have been smashed as hell. Two cases of vodka.
