ESL has passed a new rule that prohibits Team YP from playing at any ESL event, according to a report by Jeff Grubb for VentureBeat.
The tournament organizer has implemented a new rule that prohibits sponsors who are "widely known for pornographic … or other adult/mature themes and products," according to the report. VentureBeat based the information off an email chain allegedly between an ESL representative and Team YP, informing the team of the rule and suspending them from playing at ESL events.
n a statement given to VentureBeat, Team YP esports coordinator Claire Fisher focused on how the ban would impact players on Team YP, including StarCraft 2 gamer Jeon "Dragon" Yong Soo and YP's women's CS:GO squad.
"While for some, our participation in esports has been controversial, stopping our players from competing because they are sponsored by us, in spite of Team YP operating as a completely SFW [safe for work] brand, clearly separated from any adult content, seems unfair to say the least," Fisher wrote.
According to the VentureBeat email string, Team YP offered to change even the YP in their name to something else in order to further weaken the connection to YouPorn and circumvent the new rule, but ESL reportedly argued that since the team would still be sponsored by a prohibited sponsor, it wouldn't change the issue.
Stating the obvious but this doesn't make any sense at all considering that Counter-Terrorists vs Terrorists is a pretty adult subject matter especially with all the shit going on, and that the sponsor logo isn't graphic afaik.
Sounds like they got shafted.
the game is rated M who cares if it isn't showing off a dick or something in the logo
Yeah and they'll just keep letting big underage gambling sites be the face of the rest of the orgs
I'm fine if ESL wants to start making sponsors more professional but they shouldnt put such a double standard on it
Who the fuck cares? Porn shouldn't be some taboo thing banned forever just because it's a part of adult life. Holy fuck, we've even got charities denying donations from affiliated companies.
Porn companies in the digital age have proven to be a philanthropic power house in public welfare. It would be a shame in the future to see many organizations rejecting the donations of porn companies based off of regressive-religious thought.
Yet another reason the ESL needs to go away.
Man wouldn't it be awesome if all the pro teams launched a massive boycott against ESL, for porn.
holy double-standard, batman!
Why though, teams sponsored by gambling sites are still allowed despite children being really affected by CS:GO gambling? They even advertise gambling in breaks.
Welcome to the ESL, where cheating is totally fine but being sponsored by someone is not.
remember kids: gambling is fine and sex is evil
OK before anyone goes nuts, the league's explanation is actually pretty straight forward.
A lot of the countries they operate in have banned them from advertising liquor, tobacco, drugs and porn, basically any vice so to preserve their brand they had to ban these guys
Still it's funny considering the language typically used with these tournaments

They're still hypocritical since many of those countries have probably also banned gambling, but gambling sponsors are still considered A-ok.

and most of those countries probably have some sort of moral police that smoke 10 packs a day, its the countries that dictated the terms

fak
its a family show
CS:GO is an M-rated game in the first place. What the hell are they worried about?
Next ESL tournament will have YouPorn signs in the audience. Calling it.
Double-standards and political correctness such as this are cancer. Fuck ESL.
Is blood even turned on in professional matches? I don't think I've ever noticed it
The reason behind it is mostly likely monies.
Like someone mentioned before certain countries don't want ESL to advertise pronography, tobbaco etc etc (i have no idea why gambling is fine, probably because its just 'some stupid skins' for people making the terms), and having PornHub as a sponsor would count as advertising pornography and lead to them losing revenue because of that.

team yp does not advertise that they're associated with youporn. none of their social media mentions youporn, they don't have any logos associated with youporn.

but yea of course, let's keep the gambling sponsorships because gambling is okay while sex isn't.
