Heroes of Cosplay is a popular tv series on SyFy that showcases certain cosplayers at conventions across the US. But what you might not know about it is how this show treats the people at conventions… the ones that aren’t the “elite” few, the cosplayers and convention goers behind the camera. I never had to deal with them until they came into my town - New Orleans. I thought it would be a great opportunity to see this show in person but my opinion quickly changed. The way they treated my fellow cosplaying friends and the way they took over our beloved costume contest was completely inexcusable. There were a few mishaps on the convention floor but a majority of the issues came around the time of the Costume Contest. This was my third time attending Wizard World New Orleans and usually the costume contest is done in 1-2 hours. This one took over 2 hours just to get through the individual category. It was clearly being staged because only certain cosplayers were being allowed to talk about their costumes on stage, everyone else was rushed off. I didn’t realize it at the time but the ones they stopped to chat about were mostly Heroes of Cosplay participants. They didn’t care one bit about anyone else. It became really painful to watch/participate when I saw beautiful and elaborate costumes getting rushed off because they weren’t one of the “elite few” from the show. After the contest was over, my friends and I went on to enjoy the rest of the convention as much as possible. Some of us completely shut out the competition because it was the black mark of the whole show. I began gathering stories from my friends and fellow Wizard World convention goers. Then other people began approaching me with their account of what happened. Here are our collected thoughts:
It may be a tumblr post, but it's interesting to get a perspective of it by something who has experienced it themselves http://rebel666.tumblr.com/post/90521410377/the-truth-behind-heroes-of-cosplay-new-orleans
I thought it was common knowledge that Heroes of Cosplay is operated by business-minded hustlers and inconsiderate dipshits
The worst part is that the Heroes of cosplay costumes are mediocre at best.
This is one of those things where even hearing each side of the story bottom line is confusing. I've pretty much researched everything behind this show and it mostly leans on everyone hating it. There was one group who participated in one of the episodes, which was basically a Dr Who female group that argued with the cast of the show. Experiences say that it was the cast who started the argument because by the time they started the contest, someone said “Everyone who isn’t a SyFy plant, I love you!" There's a post on Linkara's tumblr on one of the member's perspective http://atopfourthwall.tumblr.com/post/61613207338
I've never heard of this show so maybe that's why I don't get it but it seems to me that that tumblr post is just a bunch of people telling overly dramatic stories about a small group of people being moderate asshats.
researched everything? There's nothing to research. It's a shill show that can't even hit 1.0 in the ratings about self obsessed people who happen to be photogenic or happen to know a 51 crew member personally. Why you'd even bother watching something so obviously contrived and junky is beyond me.

It's just short of being the equivalent of kotaku articles about cosplayer cleavage; They'll find something to focus on and go out of their way to harass people who don't want to take interviews, will make lewd comments or badly masked innuendos (reporters like that are becoming known as 'cosplay creeps'), and will try to bend events to their will to ensure better shots, sometimes blocking off hallways without security's consent, which is made very clear to photographers that it's rude and and illegal, as it becomes a fire hazard to create choke points and back up crowds of people

Because of their shady tactics and their push to have only their "stars" to be in the spotlight, when the contest is suppose to be all about fun.
heroes of cosplay is fucking awful, even if it wasn't the staged shit-show that it is [editline]3rd July 2014[/editline] It's pretty much just a show created to stroke Yaya Han's enormous ego
I find Heroes of Cosplay stupid. Especially the main chick who keeps fawning about the seriousness of cosplay and yet her costumes always seem to focus on her boobs. [editline]3rd July 2014[/editline] And I'm seeing that she keeps finding new uncomfortable ways to focus on her breasts, and I just keep thinking of how squeezed those poor guys are.
Did anybody ever actually think that this show was any different from literally any other reality show?
Someone said something to Jessica Merizan about it and she's having a goddamn mental breakdown, posting this really bizarre thing on tumblr that seems bizarrely out of context until the last line.
I have no idea what I just read http://jessicamerizan.tumblr.com/post/90710363700/im-done
