Welcome to the Sound Design & Recreation thread, a thread where we discuss the design of sound, synthesizers and other somewhat relatable topics (Mixing + mastering music, for example).
If you wish to request a "How did x make y sound in z track", use the following format;
How did Koan Sound make the bass synth in "Sly Fox"?
then someone will respond accordingly and show in depth how it was made (and should, if at all within their reach, show a demonstration of the sound).
General rules
1. Make an effort to reply and respond to others who have shown how a sound is made, despite it being a respond to a request or not
2. Consider giving feedback to others
3. There are no limits; we can talk about the design of ANY sound! Whether it be music, a sound from a video game, a movie, as long as you can refer to the source sound with a youtube clip/whatever you're good.
Let's go homeboys! :v:
Sound design is the shit, patch making and recreating things is pretty much all I do (because I can never finish an actual composition)
Intro to Jump by Van Halen (All Zebra 2)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3865654/Temp/jump_lead.wav
Intro to Spectrum by Zedd (All Sylenth + Samples)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3865654/Temp/spectrum.wav
and a bunch more i'm too lazy to bounce and upload.
Good idea for a thread dude, love it

The Spectrum one is on point man! Fantastic work

I actually remade SebastiAn's track "Water Games",
First 4 bars are the original, then the second 4 bars is my remake
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/w7nfxpsyh3sivkb/water%20games%20rmk.mp3
i loved the sound design thread on the image-line forums so this is an awesome idea
if anyone wants any MIDIs done just ask, i also love doing that kind of work
People need to post some requests here! Seriously if there's any sounds from a track you want someone to remake for you, I guarantee there'd be some willing users here (myself included) who'd gladly help
Still looking for good old sonic CD orch hits if anyone has an idea

I volunteer as well
I quite love Insulin by Crystal Castles, and would like to hear someone's teardown of it.

I'm not so much interested in the intro as much as what kicks in around 0:07.
I'm more into Sound Design for film, animation, and games in terms of Post Production. If anyone ever needs tips on that sort of thing by all means just throw me a line and I'd be more than willing to help.
Gating, sidechain compression, lots distortion/overdrive. Not the most creative of CC's production tbh.
This basically, sounds like some really heavy distortion
Always wondered about these gorillaz synths in 'stylo' and 'on melancholy hill'

@0:20 the long note

long note throughout the whole track
They sound a bit like they could be done with native instruments razor and I think I've read somewhere him saying that hes used razor a bit but dunno.
If anyone is using protools I'm taking avid certification courses in the winter with David Revill. I know my fair share already but if anyone needs help shoot me a line.

The one in stylo is a detuned square wave of some sort yet i'm not really sure how they did the one in melancholy hill - both of them tho were most likely made in a hardware synth, they don't use any software afaik

Can I ask what exactly 'gating' is?
Can I ask what exactly 'gating' is?
It attenuates (reduces) noise below a certain level.
A use for this would be if you're recording a drum kit. Soloing the snare mic (or overheads) would still render the kick, and other bass noise frequencies. Gating helps block out those lower pitches so you can get more crisp snare with less kick instead of a snare and kick equally.

I've found that despite my strong distaste of Pro Tools when it comes to making music, it works wonders in terms of Post-Production Sound Design. I redid all the sounds in Alien Swarm as a mod using exclusively Pro Tools and it worked out wonderfully.
Pro tools is pretty much the industry standard DAW for sound design work. I've looked all over the internet for job applications regarding sound design work (not intending to work there now, just browsing) and literally every one says it's essential you have at least 2 years or more experience within pro tools

So for some sort of Epiano VST like lounge lizard, how would I recreate that sort of crystalline bell tone that is in this song?

Sounds more like a synthesized xylophone to me;
To get the sound from this track you basically need to just tamper with the tremolo/vibrato (I'm unsure which would be more appropriate in this case) slider until you get it right
Here are some sweet free xylophone vst's i've used in the past

Its mostly for live sound. Midi is terrible in pro tools

Razor wasn't released when that album came out so I doubt it haha. They're pretty generic pad sounds. Detuned waves stacked together, maybe some chorus or phaser or a little bit of FM on them.
How did Intronaut do those feedbacky guitar sounds all over this album?

How do Cult of Luna make those wailing siren-type guitar sounds? They're so awesome.
5:58 and onwards
There's obviously reverb and echo, but that's as far as I can guess.

Not a guitar player but I knew someone who emulated something like this. If you play guitar just hold your finger down on a string then move it down or up toward the note you want to land on, without lifting your finger. Bunch of different settings on the amp make this sound too.

Reverb and delay like you said, with a guitar finger slide.

Alright, so I'm really interested in how the hell Pendulum created their lead synth for the track "Witchcraft", as linked below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogMNV33AhCY
It starts at around 0:44
I'm also interested if anyone can clue out what instrument they're using for that eerie, hollowsounding very highfrequency sound that starts around there as well, it sounds like it is a guitar playing the highest F on the guitar with loads of effects, but I'm not sure.
Anyone else got any idea?

I'd love to hear exactly how you made it with Zebra 2, and about the vst in general, what type of sounds can you create with it?
Aight, thanks for the quick answer!

Pretty simple, detuned saw oscillator with four voices going through a vintage filter with some slight drive and resonance. The real key to the sound's "feel" is the filter envelope, which softens the attack slightly (cutoff starts at the half way point and then an envelope quickly fades it in to full).
[SHAMELESS ZEBRA 2 PLUGGING]
As for Zebra 2 in general, I don't think I've ever come across a better synth for $200, it does fucking everything. You can freely rearrange the modules, so you can emulate the routing of pretty much any synth on the market or come up with your own crazy shit if you want to. The oscillators are crazy powerful, you can draw your own waveforms and then mangle them with various effects before they even touch anything else. Then you've got two filter modules, one around 17 different models to choose from, and another that lets you mix and match different drive and resonance characteristics (plus it can actually be two filters in one). Then you've got an FM oscillator for dirty sounds or 80s synth wankery, a comb filter for physical modeling, and then various effects like ring modulation, frequency shifting, and distortion (one of the distortion modules is a brand new analogue modeled unit).
Then on top of everything I've already mentioned, which is just the polyphonic per-voice stuff, there's a comprehensive effects section with EQs, compressors, reverb, delays, chorus, distortion, etc. Then for modulation, there's 6 LFOs, 4 envelopes, modulation mixers and mappers, and a rather advanced multi-segment envelope for complex curves. Nearly every parameter can be modulated.
So basically Zebra runs circles around other synths at its price. The only reason I wouldn't recommend it over something like Massive or Sylenth is if you really want a specific sound character, because those synths have very distinct sounds. I could go on and on about it, but I think I've said enough. Check out the site for more info

Gee golly gosh! I sure was skeptical about buying the brand new Zebra 2! But now I'm absolutely certain it's the dilly-darn best! Gee wiz, thanks c0lin!
srsly tho i was skeptical about buying it but you basically validated a reason of buying it now thanks babe
