He makes a good point that its pointless to shoot a fish if you already have it in a barrel. I never thought of it that way.

Being German myself I got the meaning instantly, it's just common sense. Some people just suck at getting idioms.

Shooting fish in a barrel is easy. You don't even have to aim at the fish, you can just shoot the water and the shock stuns or kills the fish.
You can't shoot stuff that is underwater, the bullet will stop 10 cm or so underwater. So it's really hard. Only if the barrel isn't full of water it's still kinda hard probably.
