This morning, Fox brought its "fair and balanced" reporting to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The headline? [sp]"A game that lets you play as a terrorist?"[/sp]
That was followed with this pre-commercial quip: "Is the game going too far? We're going to have a fair and balance debate to find out."
Jon Christensen of website Slash Gamer and Common Sense media CEO Jim Steyer discussed the issue with the Fox host. Reader Ryan transcribed the conversation from his television set.

Part of the discussion:
Fox Host: Jim, you got some problems with this game?
Jim: It's mainly for adults and a well made game, but there's no doubt there's a link between violent video games and kids.
Fox Host: Jon, you essentially get to be a terrorist and kill people and it's very realistic.
Jon: You're not actually a terrorist. You're a CIA undercover agent. You are infultrating a terrorist organization and the game specifically says, when you go into, uh when you work with this terrorist organization. You are um... (Jon loses his train of thought, awkward moment) You are a a a uh a a a CIA oberative. (chuckles) I'm sorry.
Fox Host: Jim at what age is this game appropriate or is it ever appropriate?
Jim: The main issue with violent video games, including very well made made games like COD. There's no question there's correlation between violent games and kids blah blah*. It's up to the parent to decide whether they buy the game for their son or daughter blah blah*. You need to use common sense.
*blah blah blah added by reader Ryan
Fox Host: I'll give you the final world Jon
Jon: Kids can definitely pick up the game. If parents buy it for them. I have a buddy who's a manager of a store. Little kids came in to buy the game and he asked if they were over 17. They said no, so he didn't sell them the game. Retailers are doing a good job. It's been proven time and time again.
Fox Host: You bring a violent game into a house with an 8 year old, nothing to stop that kid from playing it and becoming a terrorist...on a video game.
Jon: That's ridiculous! You're not a terrorist! It's pixelated violence! You're not a terrorist!
Fox Host: It's violence.
Jon: (closing his eyes) It's not real. It's not real.
Fox Host: Jon and Jim. The debate goes on.
Who didn't see this coming?
Knowing them, it'll be anything BUT fair and balanced.
lol, lets you play as a terrorist.
First thing that popped into my mind was CS. Why don't they talk about that? huh? DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY INNOCENT HOSTAGES DIE IN THAT GAME BY YOUR HANDS, EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T MEAN TOO?!! DO YOU?! ROUND AFTER ROUND AFTER ROUND!
Poor guys, RIP Kleiner clones. I feel more for them than the civilians in MW2
We had games that let you play as a Nazi, so why not terrorist?
Oh no! Thank God there's never been a game that let you play as murderers, demons, psychopaths, mercenaries, nazi soldiers or terrorists before.
: "Is the game going too far? We're going to have a fair and balance debate to find out."
hahaha
Let our kids play games about transformers, maybe they will become robots :downs:
Honestly, who cares about Fox any more? Everyone with half a brain knows they're crazy kooks, and the kind of people who do watch them aren't the type to listen to reason.
Let them spout their bullshit to the mindless masses, whilst us intelligent people get on with slaughtering civilians
I mean there's never been a game where your entire goal was to wipe out the human race, right?
Oh whoops, sorry, there was. It's called DESTROY ALL HUMANS
No one shat their pants at that did they?
As some of us have already stated, this is CERTAINLY not the first time you can play as an evildoer.
Dammit, Fox, where were you when Prototype and Infamous were launched? In thise games you could pretty much be a psycho serial killer!
Especially Prototype: slaughtering, tearing apart and EATING innocents was pretty much the first thing on Alex's to-do-list.

But you can't grow a blade out of your hand, can you?
Let me try now...
NNNNNGGGHHHHRRZZBLLPLLTno, I can't grow a blade out of my hand.
:(
Now that I think of it, I've been killing innocence civilians in GTA IV and this mission made no difference. They are just pixelated dumb bots.
We had games that let you play as a Nazi, so why not terrorist?
There never was a game were you played as a Nazi. Just games that have german soldiers. Not every german in ww2 was a Nazi :downs:
But you can't grow a blade out of your hand, can you?
Yes but you can still tie a knife or short sword to your forearm, go out and kill someone with it and then eat their corpse. Essentially the same thing.
Fuck Fox
There never was a game were you played as a Nazi. Just games that have german soldiers. Not every german in ww2 was a Nazi :downs:
This is hilariously wrong. Sure not every German in WW2 was a Nazi. However, the Nazis ran the government and military. Fighting in the german military at the time meant you were fighting for the Nazis, whether you wanted to or not. Ergo, Nazi soldier.
Not every german in ww2 was a Nazi :downs:
Uhhmm... If you didn't pay your fidelty to the Nazi party you could have been flagged as a traitor and you could get seriously fucked up, soooo....
Yes but you can still tie a knife or short sword to your forearm, go out and kill someone with it and then eat their corpse. Essentially the same thing.
But in MW2 you use guns, they shoot and can grant you more kills than a blade.
But you can't eat their corpses. I think.

Human-flesh-eating terrorists? AWESOME!
Jack Thompson will rise up to the challenge.
We had games that let you play as a Nazi, so why not terrorist?
Because up till now, the position of the player was made clear by the devs.
In CS, the terrorists are trying to blow up chemical containers.
You either take side of the terrorists or the police.
In Wolfenstein, the Nazis were the "bad ones".
In GTA, the gangsters were made fun off and yet still shown as human creatures.
The police would eventually get you, you somehow got penalties for killing innocents.
In MW2, you just kill the people. Killing them or not killing them has no influence on the games behaviour.
Nothing.
It's the lack of position on the scene from the developer that shocks me.
Yes it's just pixels but it's important what they symbolize.
But in MW2 you use guns, they shoot and can grant you more kills than a blade.
Point remains, there've been countless games allowing the player to kill civilians with firearms. Now that one of the playable characters is under the "terrorist" label it somehow makes it worse.
Logic, Fox News. Learn to use it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when you join any of the branch of any service you are serving for your country.
If your country happened to be a National Socialist government you'd be serving for your National Socialist government. Therefore in essence you would be a National Socialist since you were fighting for the advancement of National Socialism.
Of course some soldiers weren't as hardliner as others but you still were serving your Nazi country.
EDIT:
Waffen SS pack for DOD:S all the way

Bullshit. In the end you get show. How isn't that enough of a consequence?
Lol@fox.
I don't see anything wrong with a game where you play a terrorist.
(and it's not even a real terrorist in MW2)
Hmm, well I guess you are right. But not all german soldiers were hardcore nazis :P
Fact. Youth Violence has dropped over the recent years
Fact. People committed crimes before video games
Fact. Fox news could take the place of The Daily Show, but I hope it doesn't because The Daily Show is way more reliable
