• Sony abandons audio-video-editing software, sells business to Germany's Magix
Sony’s business has strengthened in recent years, but that hasn’t stopped the company from trimming off some of the excess fat, so to speak. In the past few years, Sony has sold off its VAIO laptop division as well as its online gaming division, Sony Online Entertainment. Now, the company is selling off almost all of its Sony Creative Software programs to Magix, a German software company that specializes in multimedia software.
Source. To be honest, I wasn't expecting for Sony to sell off most of their video editing software line.
As a Vegas user. I'm scared of what will happen.
Unfottunately you now own Magix Vegas. The whole thing is broken now
As a Vegas user. I'm scared of what will happen.
Try Grass Valley Edius.
Guess I'll have to stick with Sony Vegas 13 forever now. Oh well. It crashes less than 12 at least. :why:
Guess I'll have to stick with Sony Vegas 13 forever now. Oh well. It crashes less than 12 at least. :why:
Why not just use Premiere/AE? They're pretty great.
Why not just use Premiere/AE? They're pretty great.
Its not as simple to use as Vegas, there's just so much that premiere does wrong IMO. [editline]30th May 2016[/editline] Man I really don't want to switch over to premiere later on
Why not just use Premiere/AE? They're pretty great.
It's a time consuming transition, arguably more resourceful in the longrun but it's hard to justify relearning a new program when the one you're used to can (most of the time) handle your needs the only real reason to move would be if you specifically need something vegas cant provide and most casual video editors probably wont be using special text and generation effects in AE or premiere, or if they do it's so rare and one-off it becomes easier to just ask someone else to do it

Other than that Vegas is still my fav.
Well, Magix software usually is in the rubbish bins for € 5, so this might be a good thing
Why not just use Premiere/AE? They're pretty great.
Vegas is something I've been familiar with for years, ever since I discovered it back in 2007. So over the years I learned the layout fairly well, I have meddled in Premiere several times over the years but I never really learned how it all works. So it's gonna be a pretty lengthy transition from Vegas to Premiere.
I remember using Sony Vegas for a little bit, and then I tried Premiere. Instantly fell in love. After Effects is great too. Also, as someone who used to use Sony Acid Pro for mixing, it's absolute shit. Jump to Cockos Reaper.
Aw shiet, Vegas is my favorite editing software
welp, been using vegas since 2008 back to WMM

They also both support 32bit linear pipeline [del]since CreativeCloud[/del].
Why not just use Premiere/AE? They're pretty great.
They're pretty average tools these days and with subscription based software, Adobe is free to up the prices and disable the program if the user doesn't agree with the pricing.
Premiere? Vegas? What about editing videos in Blender
I end up using both. mostly cause there's those random video files from no name cameras that premiere decides to pretend audio doesn't exist with, making group video projects a nightmare in premiere sometimes.
God dammit. Vegas is the first piece of software I've actually considered paying for. I really hope magix doesn't do anything drastic (aside from making the damn thing less crash prone).
Why not just use Premiere/AE? They're pretty great.
honestly i've been using vegas for years and im thinking of switch to them instead. i'm familiar with adobe products anyway.
honestly i've been using vegas for years and im thinking of switch to them instead. i'm familiar with adobe products anyway.
Same here. Seems like a decent excuse to make the switch, even if Magix don't fuck it up.
Maybe they will add an official, 560€ worthy, professional text effect that doesn't have terribly bugged keyframing functions.
Funny thing is that both Vegas and Premier/AE have their own unique and handy tools. I love the automatic key frame tracking that you got in After Effects but like someone said before i can edit 10x faster in Vegas compared to After Effects. Other then that Vegas doesn't support a lot of video files, crashes pretty fast and has a few other issues which in my eyes seem simple to fix but are never approached by Sony. That being said, Magix's software always felt rather cheap and something they would stuff as bloatware but we shall see.

I don't think After Effects is the best for making all the cuts.
If the new owners can overhaul Vegas to: Not be as buggy. Have a REAL batch exporter. Handle native H.264 better. Have a more flexible interface. Have the option of sequences like Premiere. Not crash as often. Better text editor. etcetc and more things I've wanted for years it would be a vastly more useful piece of software. I used Vegas Pro since 2006 up until August of last year when I went fulltime Creative Cloud when I got an editor job. There are things that Adobe has in Premiere that are just mindblowingly dumb sometimes.

I edit in Premiere and carry over to After Effects. It's like writing an essay in Photoshop. You could... but it's not for that.
I edit in Premiere and carry over to After Effects. I don't think After Effects is the best for making all the cuts.
Making cuts in premiere isn't that simple either. Instead of just pressing S to split I have to change the tool and then hope that I actually cut it at the frame that I want, then I have to switch tools again and do the moving/deleting work. I also really like that I can just drag and drop a video into vegas and let it set the project settings as the imported source. It's kind of a selling point to me.
IIRC, Premiere was built from the ground up to mimic old school editing systems; it has bins etc and is really fucking dumb in a lot of departments. Adobe basically snatched the guys behind Final Cut or Avid or something and they made the whole interface for Premiere. For instance you can click and drop a media folder into premiere--but then you cannot refresh it, you have manually add new files. Whereas my understanding of Vegas is that it was built as "video editor" so doesn't have some of the mind numbingly stupid things that Premiere does. Also, Vegas seems a lot better for YouTube Poop/wacky video editing stuff than premiere.
Yea Vegas seems designed with the digital era in mind. Vs premiere which seems like it's still designed for film editing or proper productions. Which is why there seem to be a lot of needless steps sometimes.

All you have to do is push i for in and o for out. Whatever is between them is what you keep.
i transitioned in early 2015 to premiere, the different really isn't that big as people make it out to be both vegas and premiere use similar designs for their video, if you are familiar with vegas's timeline, you're familiar with premiere probably the only problems i have with premiere is: - you can't perform a split with the keyboard, you have to use the split tool, this can be a pain in the ass if you want to do something instantly and dont want a special cursor to do it - the text editor is fucking shit, if you need to make a title, it's a journey - audio+video tracks arent easy to make - audio and video timelines are separate, meaning if you have 6 video and 6 audio tracks, instead of scrolling to go down from video -> audio it's separate so video has its own video timeline, audio has its own, this can get annoying - crashes more than vegas in my experience but its worthwhile tho, premiere is used widely in the industry and you might as well get used to it, also compatibility with other adobe products like photoshop and AE is great, that should win over everyone
As a Vegas user. I'm scared of what will happen.
Switch to Premiere, like you should have ages ago.
