• Spirituality (and lack thereof) linked to specific areas of brain

Source: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=brain-surgery-boosts-spiritual [release]Removing part of the brain can induce inner peace, according to researchers from Italy. Their study provides the strongest evidence to date that spiritual thinking arises in, or is limited by, specific brain areas. To investigate the neural basis of spirituality, Cosimo Urgesi, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Udine, and his colleagues turned to people with brain tumours to assess the feeling before and after surgery. Three to seven days after the removal of tumours from the posterior part of the brain, in the parietal cortex, patients reported feeling a greater sense of self-transcendence. This was not the case for patients with tumours removed from the frontal regions of the brain. "Self-transcendence used to be considered just by philosophers and crank new age people," says co-author Salvatore Aglioti, a cognitive neuroscientist at the Sapienza University of Rome. "This is the first really close-up study on spirituality. We're dealing with a complex phenomenon that's close to the essence of being human." The authors pinpointed two parts of the brain that, when damaged, led to increases in spirituality: the left inferior parietal lobe and the right angular gyrus. These areas at the back of the brain are involved in how we perceive our bodies in spatial relation to the external world. The authors of the study in the journal Neuron1, say that their findings support the connection between mystic experiences and feeling detached from the body. "The most surprising part was the rapidity of the change," says Urgesi. "This discovery shows that some complex personality traits are more malleable than previously thought." So religious people have something in common with people with defective brains? Interesting.
Great, now The Family is probably going to start lobotomizing their members.
Scientific American is a magazine that would deny god's existence even if he came down from the skies. Not a great source, in my opinion.

So brain damage is related to religion? I can't honestly say I'm the least bit surprised.
This is your brain. This is your brain on religion.
Some how, I'm not surprised.
This is kind of a "no shit sherlock", you can induce just about anything by messing with the brain.
WTF, This reminds me of when they cut your brain in point lookout, fallout 3 so you can join some tribe and :crying:
Well, that would explain some of the issues the WBC has.
I'm probably the most chilled out religious guy out there. I believe in God, but I also believe in equal rights (Gays, Lesbians, etc.) and I don't go around shoving my religion down your throat. If it comes up in topic, I'll be like, "Yeah, I'm religious, so what?" It's really no big deal. A lot of people get the wrong idea about us because of the religious fanatics.
When I realized that in the end anything I have ever or ever will have done adds up to nothing against the vastness and eternity of space I started screaming but I don't scream as much now that I have forced myself to forget. :buddy:
Very interesting, hopefully this can be used to show religions that they are stupid and made up.
I'm Christian, that doesn't make me stupid! It's not like I'm some dumbfuck..
well playing pretend like a retarded child your whole life is bound to have ramifications...
Scientific American is a magazine that would deny god's existence even if he came down from the skies. I love god =)
Hitting your head with a hammer does this, too
Why is religion stupid and how do you know it is made up? The only people sounding stupid and pompous are the fucking atheists going "lol see religion make u stupid" The only thing dumber then being a crazy religious person is a uptight asshole atheist. Atheists and religious people are just as stupid as the other. I have problems with both sides who can't seem to keep their mouth shuts and let people believe in what they want too. And i highly doubt that any of you fully understand the article all so you see is "LOL RELIGION MAKES YOU STUPID!" This is only going to fuel a argument that makes both sides look like complete idiots. I often see stupid people who are atheists - i guess there is a correlation between atheism and stupidity. All i have to say is can you prove god exists? can you prove he doesn't exist? No, so both sides shut up. Move on with your lives, someone believing in god (Or not believing) isn't going to effect your daily lives. I know the article is about the fact loss of certain parts of the brain are linked with acceptance of religion, but i can see all these other posts don't get that so. I was posting that relating to that, not the article itself.

This doesn't have anything to do with religion, it's about a part of your brain that recognizes where you are in the world compared to everything around you. Of course fucking with that will make you feel more detached and lead to a "Spiritual" feeling.

Such as natural selection or evolution. I have no problem with Christians, I just hate stupid ones, who impede progress for their own self-serving goals.

I do it quite often, can be depressing to some. Though I figure anyone that can actually contemplate this at length isn't the kind of person that would let something as weak as depression get the better of them.
Here comes the atheist circle jerk.
At least mostly everyone's acting mature so far. [editline]04:14PM[/editline] What
Here comes the atheist circle jerk.
Apparently legitimate arguments are a circle jerk.
At least mostly everyone's acting mature so far. [editline]04:14PM[/editline] What
At least until an Athiest comes in here and proclaims his "religion" of practicing no religion superior to every other religion. This is bullshit anyway. A brain injury will make a person behave differently? Gasp! I would have never guessed.
Why do I feel as though the Westboros are going to do something about this?
