While it is common for this to happen, this is the second day in a row a larger number of Russian aircraft have been intercepted.
Testing response times?
Probably, or they are doing a show of force. The only thing out of the usual is the amount of aircraft, and the fact it is the second day in a row.
Every day they'll increase the number of planes flying over Europe until there's so many that they block out the sun and cause crop failures and then Russia will take over.

Flexing their penis.
I know people keep mocking me for it, but I believe we're looking at the start of a second Cold War.

That depends on events to come. However, I have no doubt that future history books will mark the Crimean Crisis and the War in Donbass as a period of increased West vs. Russia tension, at very least. Hell, you could trace it back to Syria if you want to really look into it. Hopefully these events don't become more commonplace.
How happy would you be if you were those pilots though?

If I were a Russian military pilot, being ordered to violate the airspace of the most powerful military alliance on the face of the planet would not be on the top of my "fun list" :v:
Why? Legimately if I had two jet engines behind me, and that plus the whole shitstorm which would follow my death, that would make it more exciting
If someone showed up right now and gave me that order, despite me not knowing how to fly a jet I would jump to it

The west wanted to go in and help remove Gaddafi and support the resistance. Russia did the most it could to keep the west from doing anything. We said fuck that and did it anyway. I think the fact we were willing to ignore them and press on with the issue shook the Russian leadership, they felt like they were losing what little control they had left, so now they're doing they're damnedest to get it all back.

In hindsight, the Russians were right about Libya and Syria.

No, Gaddafi was a terrible person and dictator.
The problem that should be highlighted is that some countries have this 'brilliant' idea of supporting terrorist groups who are fighting the neighboring country/religion.
Like how Syria supported ISIS because "it was fighting Iraq" .. now its threading everyone.
Throw in that the government are corrupt, incapable, hated by the major population and it usual will rather kill the citizen than stepping down.
Back to topic:
Russia are just using spy-planes to map-out EU's military 'n stuff .. horrible outdated and can lead upto conflicts, but consider that USA are worse with spying on the phone/network .. ect
Gotta admit, Sukhoi and Mikoyan/Gurevich know how to make awesome jets

I'd say to go back even further to 2008 if you're looking for a catalyst. There had just been the resumption of regular Tu-95/Tu-142 flights into and around the airspace of multiple nations the previous year, the beginning of an ever escalating trend of overflights and airspace incursions continuing to this day; there was clear animosity and tension over Russia's role in and handling of the war in South Ossetia and most concerning you had Russia threatening the deployment of nuclear weapons over the United States' plan to construct a missile defence site in Poland that was of absolutely no threat.
I think Russia set a clear pattern for its foreign policy long before even Libya and unfortunately there's little indication of a change of heart. As to whether or not we're looking at the makings of a Cold War round two, I wouldn't want to be John Kerry at the moment to say the least.
Russia is complaining about defensive (but in a sense passive aggressive) missile bases popping up around it, but it continues to violate air spaces almost daily. I've seen users on here complaining about NATO being aggressive - and yeah, it's pretty hard to argue that the expansion of NATO hasn't been threatening to Russia - but Russia really needs to stop this shit if they want those claims to have any legitimacy. Why would they need to test response times if there was no chance of war? Then how can they complain about NATO building defensive structures?
