An older game from 1998, developed by Monolith Productions (creators of No One Lives Forever, The Matrix Online, Blood II: The Chosen, the F.E.A.R. series and so on) that is a bit different from their usual games; it's anime-styled and complete with giant robots. However, the game is a first-person shooter first-and-foremost, both on-foot and in your MAC (the mechs). And it's pretty violent - human enemies gib into pieces like Quake 2.
Amongst all this is the plot; players assume the role of Sanjuro, a soldier of the United Corporate Authority (UCA), whose brother, Toshiro; best friend, Baku; and girlfriend, Kura were reported dead from an operation involving killing a wouldbe-dictator on the planet Cronus, which is targeted for its precious liquid reactant, kato. Sanjuro still broods over the incident while dating Kura's sister, Kathryn. Of course, the past comes back to haunt him as Sanjuro is sent back to Cronus to assassinate a new target; 'Gabriel,' of the Fallen terrorist forces. Nothing is quite as it seems, and near the endgame, players have to make a decision that completely changes the ending and the final level(s).
Shogo was one of Monolith's favorites, but it didn't really sell well. An expansion pack expanding on the story was in production but eventually canned. Monolith themselves have stated that they have no interest in doing a sequel, but Shogo-related easter eggs pop up in their other games (ie: F.E.A.R.'s plot-centered Armacham Corporation originates in name from Shogo, two of the weapons are from Shogo (albeit renamed), and there's even a secret room in the first game that has a radio playing the opening music of this post; a major character in Project Origin wears a Shogo 2 t-shirt).
The opening song and the voice acting are cheesy, yes, but the game was pretty fun back when I played it years ago. Still got the CD, although it's pretty badly scratched. Plus the credits has to be one of the most humorous brick jokes (a reference to a gag / funny event long after it'd of been forgotten) i've ever seen.
I played the demo of this relentlessly, when I got the full game I didn't enjoy it as much. Piloting a mech and then shooting on foot was a cool transition, the gore was awesome.
To be honest, I was never a fan of mechs that looks like humans... I prefer typical walkers (weapons instead of arms, crude war machines, not some anime robodrama characters :( )
But yea, I remember this game, when I was a kid... played it a bit, but never managed to play it for long, it was hell boring, and as I said, I never really liked that kind of mechs.
this game was fucking awesome.
Song totally does not fit.
what the fuck is with that music god damn kill it
